I agree with Cara Bergman that eating unprocessed foods is the way to eat healthy and will keep you healthy.
Maureen Shackelford needs to revise her views about raw milk and saturated fat. For thousands of years people have consumed saturated fat and raw milk without any problems. They did not have heart disease or any of the other diseases we have today. It wasn't until the food industry started to process food and remove the nutrients that we started having health problems.
Problems with raw milk started when someone came up with the stupid idea of confining cows and feeding them an unnatural diet which make them unhealthy. If the cow is unhealthy, it will produce unhealthy milk. Pastured, grass-fed cows are very healthy cows and produce very healthy and nutrious milk.

This is a great article, however I want to caution people about soy milk...unless it says organic it is most likely a genetically modified soy product and that is bad for you too.

Buy from the local farmer's markets or co-ops. Lots of them in the DC/MD/VA area. And it DOES NOT cost more. I purchased a pint of strawberries for $2.00 at the market and they are like $5.00 in the grocery store and they didn't have all of that fuzzy stuff on it that makes my mouth itch.
We don't use dairy products anyway so I don't worry about that. We use Rice Milk. Once I learned what dairy does to your body, I said no thanks. But that is a personal decision. Not everyone can do that and if you don't have any issues then by all means keep drinking your milk and eating your cheese and such. We don't eat much meat either. We typically eat organic chicken and fish. And I only eat Wild caught fish where applicable. That farm raised stuff will kill you. |
|
|
How many thousands of us need to drink how many millions of gallons of fresh (unpasteurized) milk before we stop getting this "Raw dairy products are dangerous" nonsense. Look around- the fresh milk people are coming out of the closet, and guess what-- WE ARE VERY HEALTHY! Scientists know that they need to evaluate their knowledge in light of new data, not shut their eyes because what they see contradicts what they were told before. Therefore I know that these nutritionists such as Shackleford are not scientists. They are simple reciting their faith in what they were taught.

Nice to see this. I was debilitated with about every problem in the book until I started drinking raw milk and eating the Weston A. Price diet. Not only have I regained my physical and mental health, but I'm healthier in ways I never thought possible. We need to learn again that the process of real food makes life more satisfying and healthy in every way.

If you experience eating real food you quickly understand that it ends up costing less money because it goes farther. You need less of it because it goes so much farther. It is more satisfying because it is dense with nutrients and substance, and it is so much tastier. You forget how complex real food is when you're conditioned to chemicals.
I've had grass fed meat from a farm in my freezer that I've hardly touched because so little of it satisfies me and it makes those fake steaks on tv look pathetic. |

This is a good way to get the necessary nutrients in order to perform well throughout the day. A balanced diet certainly is better than subsisting on supplements.

After reading and learning aout all the hormones and chemicals that are in our commerical milk. I made a decision to go with raw mild several years ago and have never looked back. Its the best decision I have made for my health in years. Since then I have also gone "back to nature" and decided if the good Lord didn't supply it then I don't eat it. Man and science needs to stop tampering with animals and food!

Hats off to you Cara for confidently sharing your wisdom in regard to traditional foods. We (my husband and I and our three children) also follow the same diet and can tell a huge difference in our health.(We have a child with cystic fibrosis who thrives on raw milk, raw butter, kefir, yogurt, coconut oil, fish oil...(she also loves sauerkraut which is loaded full of enzymes!))

Thankyou Cara for sharing the truth. It would appear the nutritionist needs to go beyond her scope of her college education and start doing her own research. I did when I realized our health was going south. I'm a nurse and we switched about 5 months ago. I wish I had known about this sooner. Two books that are good resources are "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" by Weston A. Price and "The Untold Story of Milk" by Ron Schmid. Good Health.

Hi Beth,
The question isn't really why organic food is so expensive but why is conventional food so cheap? Most of the so-called food in the supermarket relies on government subsidies and externalizing costs. It's a sad fact that our government plays a major role in subsidizing the ingredients (like corn, think High Fructose Corn Syrup) of the junkiest foods and leaves organic and family farms to try and compete for our food dollars. Also, Americans used to (and the rest of the world still does) spend a much larger percentage of our income on food. We've been trained to think that cheaper is better. If you'd like to explore the topic more I'd recommend you check out Michael Pollan's books and YouTube clips. |

I've eaten this way for over 5 years and totally agree. I'm healthier now than I've ever been. I'm 54 years old and run circles around my 30'ish co-workers. I'm rarely sick and they're always sick.

As a dietitian myself, now retired and 'reformed', I understand now that there is no good scientific basis for blaming saturated fat for heart disease, or cancer. But condemning saturated fat has been very profitable for the vegetable oil business, where the real blame lies. The dietitian who exclaims that raw milk is so dangerous has no understanding of the remarkable properties of high quality raw milk that make it safe and very nutritious. The attitude of public health authorities about raw milk is based on poor science and complete misunderstanding, and needs to be corrected.

Our family of four also follows the Weston A. Price diet. My five year old daughter is diagnosed with Sensory Integration Disorder which is sometimes placed on the Autism Spectrum. In the two years that we have followed the diet nearly all of her SID symptoms have disappeared or have been greatly reduced. I attribute the improvements to our greatly improved diet.
As for organic fruits and vegetables, some (like strawberries) are more likely to absorb and retain the harmful pesticides while others are less likely. I buy some things organic and others I don't, if you have a budget consider if you need to buy all organic. |

Weston A. Price be a excellent source of knowledge on the subject. I believe I found at a site by the name of http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php... that basil has high vitamin A and so fear not if there's no carrots and have some extra basil.

I am a rancher, and I grew up on raw milk,home-raised eggs and chickens, beef and pork from our own yards. My family is very healthy, no allergies, asthma, high blood pressure, etc. Part of this I believe is the wholesomness of our food. Fast food is eaten by our family only as a treat, usually less than once a month. The other factor in our good health is the large amount of exercise our family recieves. It's hard work on the farm! I'm 5 foot 6, and weigh 115 pounds. I've never had to diet, and neither has my husband or my kids. The reason organic food is so expensive is because you cannot grow the large amounts of vegetables or animals on the same amount of land as a corporate farm can. If we can't make a living for our family raising the vegetables and animals, there is no point to the operation. Therefore, there are not many organic farmers, and the supply of organic products is small. Maybe someone will figure out a way we can be able to provide for our family, and supply other people with wholesome food.

Fast foods no treat for my book. Excellent keep up this beneficial process. But who says someone's not able to grow a large amount like huge corporation can? The corporations that who. We must try harder to ignore the corporations and build unions somehow. And have as many road side stands a possible. Has been my experience that the road side stand method are quite profitable. New research has indicated that tomatoes like bit of seawater added an that this gives them a boost to their nutrient content. I hope all interested with organic gardening will also do some quick and easy research at the site www.ScienceDaily.com . This site has helped everyone learning about science but also mention the newest research and sources quick short sweet articles about every subject under the sun. brightest blessings.
