I am so glad you covered the article on raw milk and organic meats and fats. I am one of the people who believes it is a healthy way to eat. We buy our milk, meat, and poultry from an Amish farmer in PA. I think the thing that was the most surprising to me was the beautiful eggs. The shells were so much thicker than the thin ones we get in grocery stores. The egg yolk is bright yellow and the egg tastes so much better.

The whole story of cholesterol is amazing to me. I think we are being hoodwinked into believing that sat. fat is bad. Think of the industry that is built on that myth. It is mind bending.

Thank you for covering the story in a fair way.

GO CARA!!!
WE consume raw milk from PA too, and we trust our farmer 100%. It is different to consume raw milk from a small farm, where a small number of cows are kept in clean pasture, vs. an industrial farm where thousands of cows stand shoulder to shoulder in enormous pens of dirt and dung -- the perfect breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria. In CA, raw milk is 100% legal, and sold in grocery stores. Give consumers the choice, and let them decide for their families!
Also, regarding heart disease: the medical link between cholesterol and heart disease is a CORRELATION, never shown to be causal. An alternate hypothesis is that when the circulatory system is in crisis, the body floods the blood with cholesterol. Thus you see high cholesterol levels. In recent years even some in the medical community is reconsidering their recommendations regarding saturated fat in our food. Stay tuned!

You know what I call this Generation?

I call it "The Lunchable Generation"
http://www.kraftfoods.com/lunchablesmom/

But more than that, we go to Grocery stores and don't buy whole potatoes, no we pay dollars more for pre-shredded potatoes!

I work with food and I know what I'm talking about... people are either too lazy or too busy to prepare proper meals.
Stories like this are nice, but they are not the reality for most of us.

I"m so happy people are finally getting smart about the dangers of processed food and the benefits of real living foods. Great article except for the ignorant comments from the other lady. It's people like her that keep Americans unhealthy. Europeans have been eating this way for centuries.

Nice if you can afford to buy all organic products, but the fact is, a lot of that stuff is very expensive. I try to stay away from processed foods as much as I can; if for no other reason, I have high blood pressure and lots of the pre-made food is loaded with salt (check out those so-called "healthy" frozen dinners!) However, I have to face the fact that my paycheck only goes SO far and if it's a choice between the $5 bag of organic carrots and the $1 bag of "regular" carrots, I have to go w/ the $1 bag. Interesting article, though!

This is the way American is going. The day of the small time farm selling wholesome, good-for-you foods is coming to an end. The day of Big, Corporate-owned farms that sell basically junk is coming forth.

James from Centreville also brings about a good point. Americans are just too lazy to cook from scratch now-a-days. It's basically take it out of the package, add water, and stick it into the microwave.

It's too bad organics are 5x as expensive. And they wonder why Americans are having obesity problems.

Thanks for writing this article about eating REAL food! It may cost more than buying highly processed "food", but the short and long-term benefits are worth it! Also, it's important to support our local farmers and get our local legislators to support them as well.

Back in 1980 the price for a gallon of milk was over $3.00. When they deregulated milk it dropped almost half price, but then you started seeing hormones and other additives.
Essentially pre-1980 milk was already "organic"

If you are on a budget (and most of us are) you can afford the healthier foods if you prepare your own meals. You can eat much more for far less, but you have to do all the prep and cleanup.

That was the point of my previous post, most won't bother...

I know someone that follows this diet and raised 5 kids to adulthood. None of the children ever got sick and never was on any prescriptions and have no other medical problems. There is something to say about this.

There is something to be said about eating natural. All this processed junk is making us fat and killing us. If we ate natural, we would more flavor and would want to eat healthy because it tastes good.

Linda, I have raised 4 kids to adult hood and none of them have ever been in a hospital as a patient nor have any problems at all. I am 79 years old and take a small BP pill once a day and that is all and my husband who is 80 has never been ill (other than colds) and is on no medication what so ever and we have eaten what we wanted and when we wanted it if we could afford it.

You're 100 percent correct! And even if you're single, you can still get in the habit of making good meals for yourself without having tons of leftovers. In the time it takes people to get in the car and drive to the local fast food place (with gas at $4 a gallon!), I can stirfry a meal and have it on the table. And I'll guarantee it's a lot better tasting than the greaseburgers!

I've been moving my family from "processed" food to healthy food over the past few months & I've seen a big difference. Since drinking Soy milk my oldes't son has come off of 3 out of 4 asthma medicine, I no longer have allergies, hence no more allergy medicine, my husband has stoped 1 out of 3 blood pressure medicines. The trade off for the price to eat healthy is not spending so much money of pharmacy drugs w/their side affects. With proper exercersise which I started on 23rd of Feb 08, I've went from a size WOMANS 14, to a regulary 12/13, from 196lbs to 185 lbs. From not being able to wear heals due to weight to being able to wear 2 1/2 inch heals all day. I'm feeling great and looking great & my husband enjoys the benefit. We will continue to eat organic foods and drink Soy milk.

I agree, we have to much "processed" food in our diets with all kinds of chemicals and preservatives, that can't be good for the body!

I would love to be able shop organic and buy food from the farmers market, but they are way too expensive and overly priced. People say well you can't put a price on good health, no you can't, but when you have a family of five to feed, every single penny matters. I was in the grocery store and wanted so badly to buy the organic carrots vs the regular baby carrots, but it was priced nearly 3.00 more than the regualars and that meant going without the kids cereal or their orange juice. So what are the rest of us suppose to do when we would love to be able to eat healthier, more wholesome, and cleaner foods for our families. The truth of the matter is, my husband and I have no extra's for the "healthy" foods in my house. After paying rent, bills, food, and don't even get me started with the gas, we don't have anything more for the priviledge of eating healthier foods. I wash and clean my fruits and veggies as best as I can and hope for the best. Could someone please tell me why organic foods are so expensive?

What is shocking is that NUTRITIONISTS still tout this "saturated fat is bad and raw milk is dangerous" nonsense. I can understand doctors, there's so much to know and you can't know everything... but a nutritionist? Isn't nutrition their specialty?

If you saw the statistics of people per year who got sick from raw milk products vs people who got sick from beef and meat products, you'd be shocked. There are literally THOUSANDS of people who get sick from meat products every year and barely 100 from raw milk products. So why does the FDA continue their witch hunt of organic dairy farmers who sell wholesome products from healthy cows? It all comes down to dollars and cents, that's what I say.

This just goes to show that you have to rely on your own ability to do research rather than what your hospital's nutritionist tells you. Maybe she's right, maybe she's wrong, but you'll never know until you check the facts yourself.

The number of people who get sick from pasteurized milk is staggering. It isn't a safe food. Heat treating dirty milk, just gives you cooked dirty milk but it isn't sterile. Pasteurization of milk was created so people could sell milk from cows on improper feed in deplorable conditions. Yum!

I drink raw milk from my own goats. As the saying goes, know your source, and I know my goats ;)

It is so good to read articles like this. I too feed my family following the Weston Price diet. We are also gluten free and mostly grain free. We are rarely sick and if we do get sick, we get over it very quickly. I feel healthier than I did 20 years ago.
