When you fast, your body goes into detoxification mode and starts to clean and heal itself from any digestive waste, toxins and waste that does not need to be in the body. It helps keep the blood clean by flushing out any toxins that are in fat cells. Fasting also gives the stomach a break from digestion and allows the body to strengthen itself up again.
Fasting also increases your growth hormone and glucagon while lowering your insulin levels.
Fasting is not starvation. Starvation is when you fast excessively to the point of muscle waste and anorexia. Many people have tried 7, 10, 21 and even 30 day water fasts and remained in good health.
The metabolism will slow down after 1-2 days of not eating, but this will pick up again when you eat next.
I recommend a book on fasting by Paul Bragg called "The Miracle of Fasting" he explains the health benefits of fasting.

Your body will go into starvation mode and may cause health problems. Your body will hang onto every calorie it has and no weight loss will occur. Bad choice. Instead if you choose not to eat, do it as part of a fast. That way your body will hang onto muscle and healthy cells while using up diseased and fat cells.
