No one ever mentions the fact that protein is hard on a persons kidneys.Protein comes not only from meat but also beans, dairy, peanut butter. None of these foods are "bad" for you. When a diet cuts out good sources of minerals, fiber & vitamins such as vegetables and fruit, that can't be a good thing. Someone on dialysis or diabetics will know that the diet promoting protein to the exclusion of everything else can be dangerous-even life threatening. Diet gurus will continue to prosper due to the vast amount od people who want a "magic pill".Reducing calories, increasing activity and eating more fresh produce, drinking water(not necessairly bottled) leads to better health as well as a reduction in body weight.

Aw, FRS, but that's so simple, it can't work! ;-) Besides, who can make money off of that?

I've tried all the fad diets, Atkins, Zone, South Beach, etc, and have found that the simplest and easiest solution is to eat what I want, just keep it in moderation and avoid processed and refined foods. Lots of exercise, as well.
I feel healthy and happy.

The reason no one ever mentions that protein is hard on the kidneys is because that baseless claim was also proven false by Christopher Columbus.

Atkins has to be practiced with common sense. It was not meant for a person to sit there and eat a slab of meat every night. You have to mix it with salads and chicken. I did'nt know about the fruit. I knew Atkins people who ate fruit. The main thing was no bread, potatoes, and vegetables like corn.

People in this forum are so ignorant. Quick to comment about things they have absolutely no clue about. Yes, atkins can be dangerous. I've never been on Atkins, but I know a couple people how have and have had great success. The strict no carb part of the diet is the induction period only. Once your body changes the way it metabolizes food, you can eat a small amount of carbs (remember, there are good carbs and bad carbs). After you reach your goal you are supposed to gradually increase your carb intake until you find the natural balance your body needs.

When will Americans start thinking a bit more broadly and realize that ONE SIZE DOESN'T FIT ALL??? Not everyone's metabolism is the same, so not everyone can engage in a diet guided by the traditional food pyramid.
And as for Atkins being "hard on the kidneys," I suggest a little research, my friends. Ketosis and ketoACIDOSIS are two very different things. Finally, the article mentions that Atkins followers "shun" fruits and vegetables. Again, not true. I like how people simply assume they know what the Atkins plan is without ever actually reading it. Hasn't anyone ever heard of a little activity called critical thinking??

"Hasn't anyone ever heard of a little activity called critical thinking??"
hasn't anyone ever heard of 2004's genius suggestion of the moderation and exercise thing?

It sucks at first, most people love their carbs. But you can't knock the results. The fat just drops like crazy during induction. After you lose what you need to lose, then you gradually introduce the carbs and fruits back in. Take a vitamin. Blood sugar levels are the important part of the whole thing, you need to eat carbs that don't increase your blood sugar.

She lost the weight she wanted to lose and then found what she could and couldn't eat and has pretty much kept it all off.

I do not any refined carbs...white bread, and such but I do eat lots of whole wheat, brown rice and fuit...It is changing the way you eat and you need to do it for life.

You are so right since my mother who works at Healthy You at the LVH and has been a health prof. at numerous local universities is totally against Atkins due to the damage it can do to your kidneys. You can completely cut out carbs!I have found the best diet is PORTION CONTROL AND EXERCISE! People need to eat the right food groups at a good portion and get off their butts and start the cardio.

Stop buying junk, get off the sofa, and go kick some assphalt. I'm tired of people whining about dieting. For most people it's about making choices--exercising for an hour or two, or watching tv with your friends, Chip and Dip. Granted, some people have other health issues that cause added pounds, but not most of America. And giving birth to five kids is no excuse for a big ars either. Been there, don't have one. This is your only body. Take care of it and stop subscribing to this fad madness.
One size does not fit all, but the health care costs continue to skyrocket because we have so many people who make bad choices.

I lost 110 pounds on a low-carb/high fat/high protein diet and have kept it off for 15 years. In addition, I have cholesterol and triglyceride numbers that my doctor says most folks would kill for.
I have bloodwork every 3 months and there has NEVER been a single kidney problem whatsoever.

i don't understand why my health insurance premiums can't be lower because i make better decisions than most people.
eating prepackaged anything is generally a bad choice too. the more often you can eat fresher foods and assemble meals from their balanced and most basic elements, the healthier you're going to be.

Here's the thing. Not just watching the carbs, but also everything else you are putting into your system. I've heard of friends having 3 eggs and a half pound of bacon with breakfast, but no toast while on Atkins. Yes, by lowering your carb intake you can lose weight, you just need to watch everything else.(Fats, sodium, etc...)
My wife is a dietitian and DESPISES the Atkins diet.

Notice your one key word in your first sentence. "Low" carb. You didn't actually cut them out completely and that's where people go wrong.
