What will be the ratio of feed to the poundage of fish produced? If it is anywhere comparable to other industrial fish production schemes the tuna will require many pounds of feed to produce each pound of tuna meat. This is like the beef feedlots that use 10 pounds of grain to get one pound of meat. Only a fetish food like tuna sushi/sashimi can inspire this kind of resource waste.

maybe they'll feed tuna to the tuna and we'll create "mad tuna," disease! just like they do with the beef! nothing like eating beef that's been fed beef!

Fetish food? Raw fish and sushi have been eaten for ceturies, though probably not where you're from. I suppose in other parts of the world your consumption of beef and pork would be considered a fetish too, using your definition. Try getting the big picture.

Give the farm a chance to work. It may or may not. Parsons sounds like Chicken Little and already claims to be an "expert" when this will be the first blue water farm on this planet !!! I wonder if he's a castoff from California....he truly sounds like a transplant from la la land.

This is a very well designed and thoughtfully considered project that has taken years to pass economic and scientific hurdles. Those who have a negative knee-jerk reaction should reconsider and read about this project before making stink talk.

We must never forget that our forefathers came to this land looking for opportunity, and most of the things we have stem from folks being given a chance. When I was just a boy it was common for a neighbor to say, "Give chance."

To this project I say, "Good luck, and do your best. We hope you succeed."

You'd have a point if Tuna cost the same per pound as feed, but it doesn't so what are talking about? Also it's nice to see "environmentalist" like Maui Tomorrow following the lead of the Sierra Club in obstructing any kind of progress. They aren't for the environment they are anti people.

what is the difference between farm salmon and wild salmon? Absolutely nothing.

The same for farm tuna and wild tuna. the genetic make up of the tuna will be the same.

the environmental wackos have nothing better to do but to complain.
If you farm wild tuna from the ocean then we are depleting the fish population so when someone develops a plan for farming Tuna in a control environment then the wackos complain about so they can sue for the money.

The wackos is setting up procedures to sue for money. they are the most hyprocritical people i know.
the wackos bring no productivity in sustaining their life.

It's privately funded. When it's running and selling tuna it will GENERATE tax revenues.

Looks like Maui Tomorrow wants to foul up yet another good idea.

Why don't they do their homework and see the whole picture, rather than raise unwarranted concerns about non-existent environmental threats?

I hope they realize that the tuna to be raised in this farm comes from local waters. The spawn comes from fish caught in the Hawaiian Islands. The ONLY difference is that they're in huge underwater cages and being fed regularly.

Wild fish poop in the ocean -- I hope they realize this. So that's nothing new.

If Hawaii Oceanic's tuna farm is successful, it will provide about half as much tuna that is sold at the fish auction. That can take a lot of pressure off wild tuna stocks and reduce rate of population decline.

Yeah! Privately funded under the auspices of Federal grants. Not to mention Act 221.

The Japanese are trying to raise Blue Fin Tuna in Japan.

Wild fish get contaminated by escaped pen fish. They (pen fish) have to be fed larger and larger doses of antibiotics to hold down stress related disease. Eventually our wild fish stock will be affected. This is a very serious problem that is increasing around the world in pen raised fish.
