Ignorant clap-trap. Buying local simply undermines the market economy. It rewards poor quality and production for simply being in the local area. Also, your projected revenues were all pulled out of thin air, for they completely fail to account for the lost jobs and revenue for people who work in the imported goods sector.

The biggest single thing we can do to support Hawaii agriculture is to require the DOE to buy Hawaii produce for the school lunch program.

Local people already buy plenty of Hawaii's number one agricultural product. Can you guess what it is? No, it's not pineapple, sugar cane or papayas. Hints: it is more than a TOKEn product, it's endorsed by Snow White's favorite dwarf - DOPEy and it's been studied by numerous JOINT committees.

Please do not reduce the agricultural land, but instead do everything to support food sustainability for Hawai'i.

Everybody, support our local produce farmers and their families that feed us.

Especially products from that precious, highly valuable, and MOST productive agricultural land on the Ewa Plain, the last open space there.(You know, the one mufi wants his pal to plaster over to build even more homes the infrastructure out there cannot support, but will pour money into his pals pocket, and trickle down to mufi.)

If you going "Green," go all the way.

Local produce folks should get the sticker for put on top that says "Grown in Hawaii," we know what for spock and buy that.

Criticism about others farther up the food chain is devoid that THIS is local produce, grown right here.

Many people would rather buy sweet onions from Georgia, tomatoes from California, beef , chicken and pork from the midwest because of PRICES. They also look better than many local products. People gotta provide low cost food for their families. If I had a thick wallet I would gladly buy local stuff but my wallet is very thin.

Go green buy imported produce and beef! The carbon foot-print from imported fertilizer and feed is much more than just buying ag products from the mainland.

What the commentary didn't mention is that buying locally also is good for the environment as it reduces need for shipping from far distances.

Why is mainland produce cheaper? Wouldn't shipping costs make it more expensive? I try to buy local whenever I can as local lettuce is much crisper and tastier than imported lettuce.

The biggest problem is at open markets. I've seen garlic that's cheaper when imported from China.

I would prefer to buy local, but the problem at places like these is you can't control the quality. For instance, some of the lettuce I've seen are a grade or two lower than what you would find in a supermarket. The bigger issue is you maybe assuming no chemicals were used, be it herbicide or pesticide, on the product. That would be an incorrect assumption.
