Very enjoyable article, Betty, but I was hoping to see the recipe for Rob's Guamanian BBQ chicken! Perhaps in next week's column...

Oyako donburi is one of my favorites. I think I'll surprise my wife by attempting to make it and give her a reprise from doing all the cooking.

Happy anniversary, Betty -- and congratulations to you and Rob and your non-incarcerated progeny! I, too, would like to see a recipe for Rob's Chamorro chicken (or is it not Chamorro?). Maybe chicken Caliguen too (though not sure of that spelling). I also want a source of freshly grated coconut for that dish, so I don't have to mess with husking/cracking/grating the required coconut meat myself. Have a lovely anniversary celebration!

congrats on having three kids and NONE of them are incarcerated! Used to be people would say "I have three kids and they all graducated from high school/college. With today's lower standards, just raising kids that don't end up in jail is the accpeted goal/norm? Our future....scary!!!

Love these kinds of foods but wish there was a way to make them with less sodium. : (

Congrats on your anniversary, Betty! I, too, live far away and wait every Wed to read your column. I recently requested a recipe for butter rolls and wonder whether you've been able to find one? Any luck - hope so! Again, congrats! Enjoy and celebrate!

Congratulations! Thank you for the recipe. I probably won't be able to cook it, but at least I can keep it for future references. As for your husband's chicken recipe, I was thinking, maybe you could just hold a big belated anniversary party at Ala Moana beach park and invite all of us who want to try it to drop on by. I too love canned corn and would love to get a taste of Rob's chicken! Oh, and maybe you should leave the booze out of the picture..I'd hate to see any of your children end up in jail for 'whatever the reason'. I don't want to see their records tarnished and I'd hate to see you have to stop bragging about your 'free' children.(Smile) Take care and enjoy life!

For the record, not only do my kids NOT have criminal records, the oldest graduated with honors from USC, thank you very much, and the second is a straight-A student at UCLA, and the third is the smartest kid in the 6th grade, or so he tells me. I didn't want to brag, but my husband doesn't like the idea of anyone thinking we have low standards.

Oyako donburi is one of my favorite meals, also, but this recipe is pretty heavy with the salt. Two teaspoons plus shoyu seems a bit much. 2000 mgs of sodium is pretty high.
Have you tested the recipe with 1 teaspoon salt and light shoyu?

Oh...and I'd also use low sodium chicken broth. It's not specified what kind was used in the recipe, but I can only hope that will reduce the final sodium count!

Omodeto Gozaimasu!(albeit 3 weeks late!) A successful 25 year marriage is equivalent to what a 50 year marriage was a few decades ago... and it even includes children w/o criminal records, a feat in itself!:-)
Please extend my best wishes to Rob and thank him for going through the "pain" of having to write his ono recipe down for us!
