People can lose weight if they know they have to check in once in a while. I remember a study where they gave 1/2 of the participants an electronic scale and 1/2 didn't get one. When the ones with the electronic scale weighed themselves the weight was e-mailed to the study site. Most people in this group either lost or maintained weight, the other group had a harder time.
