This story and study is not for the benefit for the kids. It is for the benefit of BARFMA (BigDiet/Pharma) who want to expand their market of dangerous and useless weight loss products to kids. People should also be aware of the real reasons kids are gaining weight including endocrine disrupters in plastics, artificial estrogens in the environment, and moms' weight loss dieting before pregnancy.
I read this thread yesterday and was amazed by all the useless bigoted opinions. It is clear people are getting their information from the media and are too lazy to do research on their own. So kids will continue to suffer from ignorance! |

Link to article about how moms dieting can increase the risk of low birth rate children who go on to develop diabetes, obesity and heart disease later on in life. We should all know by now that dieting makes our bodies better at making fat. But it is interesting how it affects future generations. Why don't you hear this on the news? Because news exists for the sponsors. Why isn't harpy Tom Harkin the Senate food cop concerned about this? Because harpy Harkin gets significant campaign contributions from Herbalife! And owns significant stock in pharma Johnson and Johnson to boot! |

Chemicals in plastic are also associated with weight gain in children. They have studies with mice where mice exposed to the chemicals gained much more weight on the SAME diet! |

One more link:
http://www.thehilltoponline.com/2.4827/family... Kids from poor families gain more weight on the SAME diet. Possibly because they have much more of the stress hormone cortisol in their bodies. I believe that health comes in all shapes and sizes. But sometime obesity is a warning something else is happening in the body. We only treat the symptom because that is what is profitable. But that is like treating measles by erasing spots. People need to stop being spoon fed by the media and do some research on their own. Listening to Pharma, the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation or media docs in akin to child abuse. |

That's what a bad diet and little to no exercise achieves. Maybe there should be more parks and more outdoor participation for these kids (recess, sports, etc). Maybe the parents should provide better food instead of fast or processed food.

Of course Illinois has a higher obesity rate. We have a lot of Hispanics. As a Hispanic male myself I have to say for some reason many of us seem to always weigh 20 pounds heavier than we appear.

Lunch program food and lack of physical programs are the culprit.
When they go home to x box they only work their thumbs. |

They weren't "overweight" until the World Health Organization redefined the definition... |

Are you another one of those UN black helicopter conspiracy nuts? Go down to your local elementary school and see for yourself. |
||||
Are you making the common classic mistake of blurring causation and correlation? By my analysis there is a -0.66 correlation between family income and obesity levels on a state-by-state basis. That doesn't mean that if you lose weight you earn more money any more than being poor "makes" you fatter. The same research (Goodman, et al) concluded that lower parental education was stronger factor than income for obesity. I am not aware that Dr. Goodman’s research concludes that poor kids get fatter on the same diet as rich kids. Are you confusing the research with the college newspaper article link you provided, where the (student?) journalist made that descriptive example? |

Don't forget to mention HFCS & the other nasties in processed foods. |

Ranks 10th??? Ane we are one of the only states with a PE requirement for schools. There are lots of reasons. Bad weather, too many great tasting foods that are bad for you, extra curricular activities that are expensive, can't let young kids out without parental supervision, dangerous to bike ride places due to congestion and texting drivers, high fructose corn syrup......
|

In countries where kids are honestly poor, they are very, very skinny, with protruding bellies. Not fat slobs like here. |
||||

Seems to be some really judgmental folks here who miss the point and offer no constructive analysis for a very real problem. I may not have many answers, but at least I don't weigh in on a subject that neither affects me personally or about which I can only respond to in a knee-jerk manner.

This is why I don't watch tv anymore. They're trying to get us to watch their shows and eat the food they have in the ads. Think about it. If you don't watch McDonalds and Burger King ads then you don't want to eat their "food." I agree that people are skinnier in poor countries, but as you know they also don't watch as much tv. No tv = no junk food = not obese.

You are on the right track but headed in the wrong direction. The real beneficiaries are the idiots in this country who rely on goverment (read as Democrats, liberals and other nuisances) to make decisions for them guided under the notion of "saving lives" and "save money." The latter of which, conveniently, can never be quantified. This is effectuated through additional laws, restrictions and taxes. In a non-condenscending tone I ask if you have ever heard of smoking bans, soda bans, and the pending legislation to require nutritional content on THE MENU BOARD. It is not good enough be available through the mail, on-line, in a brochure or on the back of the tray liner. Way too many studies, experts and leftist always attempting to "do something." |

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) said greater investment in health legislation is needed. "We must confront childhood obesity head-on with education, improved nutrition, greater physical activity and increased access to preventive primary care," she said in a statement.
Sure, let's print some more money and throw it at a problem. Sheeesh . How about this. Let's tell mom and dad to act like parents and feed their kids properly. Limited portions, fruit and vegetables for snacks and no eating out. Make the kids get off their duffs and play outside or ride a bike, roller blade, take a walk or get involved in a sport. This is not rocket science. |

If ISBE would put obesity on the ISAT or PSAE, and make it count for something, maybe CPS would give us gym and recess again.

In response to #19. Yes Illinois has the daily PE mandate, but districts get waivers to eliminate PE for many reasons. Marching Band is excused, can't fit into a schedule, because the kid needs college prep. classes. The PE program needs to be daily at the elementary level. Little ones need the activity to stimulate the brain.
