“There is no U.S.S.R. any more but the threat exists, and if need be, Georgia will be able to deploy 250,000 soldiers tomorrow”

Mr Mikheil Saakashvili sounds like he is a trigger happy . He shell understand that it is easy to start the war, it is not to easy to win the war. For example, Finland attacked Russia in 1941, killed a lot of civilians in Leningrad and accomplished nothing. Instead of talking war he has to look for peaceful solutions. The war may not be beneficial to Georgia at all, not to mention a lot of trigger happy guys on another side of the border

All accounts are balanced but not closed. Yes, Finland attacked Russia and participated in brocade of Leningrad. However, it does not mean that anybody in Finland is responsible, they all forgiven. We shell remember the war, but do not seek retribution. Georgia must not attack Osetia or Abhzia, the best way is to try over smart all of tem and Russia, using they brains not brutal force.

Eh... In war winner writes history. Wikipedia offers pretty objective view on Finland's participation in siege of Leningrad.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Leningr...

"On September 4, Jodl came to persuade Mannerheim to continue the Finnish offensive and it is said that Mannerheim refused. After the war, the former Finnish president Ryti said: "On August 24, 1941, I visited the headquarters of Marshal Mannerheim. The Germans aimed us at crossing the old border and at continuation of the offensive to Leningrad. I said that the capture of Leningrad wasn't our goal and that we shouldn't take part in it. Mannerheim and the military minister Walden agreed with me and refused the offers of the Germans. The result was a paradoxical situation: the Germans were not able to approach Leningrad from the north…" Later it was asserted that there was no systematic shelling or bombing out of the Finnish territory."

I do not think that people who did not commit war crimes should be hold accountable. There is no point to accuse people who were not even born in WWII. Now is the time to move on. However, the historical facts are:

Finland attacked Russia on the front of 700miles +, starting from Murmansk on the North al the way down to Leningrad.

Finish troops do shell Leningrad and what’s more important blocked supplied routs to the city, at least 500k civilian died from famine.

They rejected Russian peace offer in the end 1941 as a result Grate Brittan declare war on Finland. The threat of US declaring war kept Finland in the bay.

However, we should not be passionate about that; it is time to move on. Finland shell be very careful dealing with Georgia though. Georgia is seeking military confrontation

they are not talking about defeating russia. they are talking about defending their country.those are two different things. and when the world will see that thousands of people are dying and russia is actually one of the conflict sides and not the peace keeper ( today their occupational forces are called "peacekeepers") then everything will change. georgia never feared big empires and that is the only reason why they still exsist, they did not give up and say,, ooh they are so big lets just all become russian and do whatever they want us to do. thats a small piece of land and not like russian wast territories that they conquerred with blood, those people dont have anything else. if in XXI century someone thinks that russia will be able to annex the country without consequences, they have to be kidding then.

Those 250,000 Georgian soldiers are no match for Russian forces.
Should Srakaswilli provoke a major incident with Russia, Georgia will be democratised and liberated within a week. The Russian flag will be flying in Tbilisi and there will be dancing in the streets.

wow. canuck, in your last post you were saying that georgia is an agressor and does not let russia to be in peace and now you are saying about russian flag over tbilisi and occupation ? hmm such a hipocrysy. well I guess you just proved that russia is the only agressor there.

russia is the only country that needs the liberation from the putinist regime that drowns country into xenophobia and chauvinism.

the international community will not allow any that kind of "liberation" that you just talked about. you are a sick person. nothing but evil is coming out of your mouth. look in your posts and you will unerstand.

Should Georgia instigate a major conflict with Russia, your international community will stand down. They will not risk alienating Russia over a pisshole called Georgia.

the west has already allianated russia. georgia is waiting for Membership Action Plan of nato which will lead to their eventual memebership in the Organization. that is exactly why russian federation is so pissod off. the old tactics will not work this time. everycountry supports it.
The United States senate passed a decree that states their absolute support and confidence in georgia. estonia, lithuania, latvia, poland, romania, the UK. greece, hungary, czech republic, slovakia, slovenia, italy, spain and EVEN france !(which has been extremely pro russian during Chirac but not now because of Sarcozy's new policy)

It doesn't appear that the west is really that much at odds with Russia. There are some differences but since the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) has been formed, Russia and NATO have common projects such as: Assessment of the terrorist threat, Crisis management, Non-proliferation, Arms Control and Confidence-Building Measures,
Theater Missile Defense, Search and Rescue at Sea, Military-to-Military Cooperation, Defense Reform, Civil Emergencies, New Threats and Challenges (including scientific cooperation).
When these little disgruntled piss hole countries are allowed to join NATO, they will have to tow the line and will be forced to co-operate with Russia who is already a powerful quasi-member of the alliance.

russia is not any kind of member or even a partner of the alliance. Nato created that council just to ease the tension. decisions in North atlantic treaty organization are made jointly and if even one state will object (does not matter how big). the decision will not be reached.
when it come to cooperation, defense reform and fight against terrorism, the alliance is cooperating with almost every country including china and that does not necessarily mean that they are friends. at the same time they do not exchange secrets or different kinds of technologies. so does russia.
