When one of my ninth grade ESL students learned she had overcome the English barrier this year and passed her state level EOC exam, she was so delighted, hugged her teachers, jumped up and down, screaming in delight. None of my other students reacted in that way, not even one who earned a perfect one hundred.
To reject these students who were ripped from their homeland and forced into a foreign world and system, is heartless. They did not ask nor volunteer to move here. They had no say and no choice as a child. In obedience to their parents, they did as they were told. They are innocent victims. If we reject them from our educational systems, we are revictimizing these hard-working students who have overcome challenges that even most adults have never experienced. Who are they harming when they sit in a course learning to be a worthwhile contributor to a society in which they have learned how to conform?
Please express your support to those in control of these laws and bills. Speak up for all of the children! They are our future, and we need those who know how to overcome adversity.
