Badd4Boro-Babb-Bullies consumed so much time with their whining and complaining and jeering comments at last night's meeting (which went on until 10 p.m.) that there was not enough time for Mr. Malone to present his "Course offerings/program of studies" discussion. There will be a special board meeting for this agenda held on Tuesday February 21, at 7 p.m. Do you think our school district needs to provide more electives such as guitar class?

Mr. Malone was given all the time he wanted. Mr. Petroni still has questions about the courses and the board felt a special meeting was needed to have the discussion and see if they can get to the point where they would be ready to vote. With all they had on the agenda they didn't feel that could be accomplished last night.

In regards to Mr. Malone and the discourse pertaining to classes and their availability we must remember a few things.
1) And foremost, we ultimately have finite resources to fund these classes. As wealthy as a community as Springboro likes to believe, there ultimately comes a time when choices must be made in regards to resource allocation.
2) The choice we make may be as simple as purchasing guitars or buying books for the schools library. Better healthcare for our existing employees or additional employees who further dilute the existing healthcare dollars?
3) The cost benefit analysis of each class offered. Not all classes are equal nor necessary. The goal is to provide a well rounded education, but there are limits that are financially imposed on all businesses that we must all respect.
I have been trying to find a course guide online and have had no success. Would it be possible to find an easily accessible one online? If anyone has an answer to that I am all ears.

Go to Springboro.org . On the High School page there is "Program of Studies 2011-12" link you can click and see what was offered this year.

In fact, it appears that our schools offer so many "electives" "extra curriculars" that parents can't even afford to pay for the numerous interests of their children. And yet, Is it true that Springboro parents are urging the board to vote yes to paying teachers so that even more stuff is provided for their students that will cost parents even more fees to the schools? Heard it on the grapevine that Mr. Malone is rounding up teachers in parking lot duty, etc., to pay them to get back into the classroom with the new round of program studies that the board will vote to approve or not approve NEW funds at the next board meeting. Also, Is it true that funds are being asked for to approve paying teachers in summer school to offer physical education classes in summer school?

If our Springboro community is so wealthy, then why are Springboro parents delinquent in paying their classroom fees for their own children to the extent of about $276,000? And if "education for our children's future" is our school district's priority with taxpayer's money, then why are parents paying "sports fees first" and letting classroom fees go unpaid?

My point is that Springboro is not nearly as wealthy as some would like to believe.
$276,000 seems like a bunch at roughly $80 per kid. That number could be a cumulative number based upon the past few years. Otherwise it would amount to roughly 3450 students out of 5500 who have neglected to pay their fees.
That does not seem to happen in the extra curricular arena, they collect or you don't dress.
The pay to participate fee was established as a threatening punitive measure to ensure passage of a levy attempt. The levies had been failing by relatively few votes, so that coupled with the withdrawing of busing in a two mile radius was sure to gain the needed votes to pass the levy. If you inconvenience and make services more expensive as an alternative to passing a levy you can then blackmail your way to victory. Fortunately the citizens of Springboro displayed character and voted down the extortion attempt.
The two mile bussing ban lasted one semester then miraculously the school "found" a way to bring it back.
The pay to play fees have unfortunately become a new revenue source for the schools and have not gone away. Instead it seems as though the current administration is funding expansions of its curriculum with that money. Purchasing a large number of guitars and adding a new class to go with them came from somewhere.
Two years ago the school district was supposedly so broke the district required a $30 million dollar levy to keep going. Now with no new sources of revenue we have money to expand offerings and purchase new equipment for a new guitar class they wish to offer.
My question is one of parity. Why is the school buying guitars for a class when every other instrument for band is rented or purchased by the students in the class?
Pay to participate became a new tax levied upon the backs of parents because they paid it, however grudgingly.

Note the hardly veiled threat and the capitalization of the word IF in the minutes.
As history has shown, none of this was required. The sky did not fall, our schools did not crumble, and our students continued to excel.

According to Mr. Malone, summer school is a self paying program. The costs are divided among the participants so the net effect is basically no extra costs to the district. At least that is what I believed he said. Checking the actual accounting fro past years would most likely provide a more factual answer to your question. Why we are paying teachers to perform to run the stoplight, check for parking passes, etc is beyond me. Would they not be more effectively employed utilizing their professional skills in the classroom teaching our children? Seems as though we could hire some part time folks to check to see if each car has the correct parking pass or man the cross walks each day. If we are looking for make work projects for our teachers, then perhaps we are overstaffed.

Questions wrote: <quoted text> very helpful resource; Springboro Schools Superintendent, Mr. Gene Lolli, is listed as a member of the COC board on the Springboro Chamber of Commerce website; so why are comments on this blog trying to tear down the school board for paying their membership fees? Do you think that Crossley, Plenty, and Swatter Two posters on this blog are SEA officials? The SEA has lost control of our multi-million dollar school budget now that voters have elected a 4-1 common sense BOE majority; it appears that now the union is whining and complaining that the union should be given "co-leadership" with our elected Springboro Board of Education representatives. Those of us on this blog need Mr. Boroman, and Pillar, and others like Just Watching to keep on telling it like it is; so that the SEA fails in each of their attempts to discredit our elected officials; our school distrtict; and our community. Remember: when the SEA attacks our board of education elected representatives; the SEA is really attacking Springboro families and taxpaying homeowners. Springboro voters are the real target of this mean-spirited campaign of the union to bring harm to our community and our schools; because union school board candidates in the recent election were rejected by Springboro voters; who favor children first budgeting with our school tax dollars; instead of the greedy union first agenda. Thank You.

Springboro/Township public safety workers are paid by taxpayers to serve/protect the public. Why are these community workers not serving the public outside the classrooms so that teachers can serve the public in the classroom?

Our schools are rated by State "Excellent with Distinction" and a "National Blue Ribbon" school by recognition. We do not want to purchase more educational services.

Speaking of holding others to a different standard, micromanaging, wasting district dollars, not putting the chldren first and hypocritical actions, has anyone else gotten wind of Novembers dead last place finisher Gentry Ellis most recent request? Seems this NFSS stawalt gal is doing the biddding of the other sore losers. She just recently requested 100's of needless emails between each BOE member and other district hooha's under the guise of freedom of information. Remember now, she was the one that complained,(you tube anyone?) as a BOE member (appointed), what a waste of district time and money it was when others requested simple treasurer reports, that were nowwhere near the expansive nitpicking reach she is now asking. Go figure...Gentry Ellis putting her personal sour grape grudges first...ahead of the kids. This request was nothing more than a personal grudge digging for dirt versus a legitimate request for information. How much has Ms Ellis, et al already needlessly cost the district since her failed bid to win election to the BOE? Ohh how the community must be crumbling with this board. lol.
