if mom has to work a 9-5. dads working 9-5 to pay for 2000 per month rent. both a looking for an extra job to help pay the bills. Who is rising the kids? when you were a teenager and you knew mom was gone for the day, how many play hooky parties did you have? how many did you attend? look i'm not trying to take up for BAD parents that don't care of their kids. i'm taking about trying to provide for kids realistically. not just the poor either, those of us that were able to keep our houses during the mortgage crisis know the sacrifices we are taking. i work in AV i took a job making 7 dollars per hr less then if i worked in LA. because i have teenagers 5 of them all in school. and i make random stops at home during the week to make sure there aren't any parties or hooky playing. some folks are not fortune enough to find work like i did. thats 11 hours away from home from 1 job, suppose they had 2... times have changed in the old days we had family values because we had families at home. we talk to our kids, but we remember they are kids and even the best of em can't be trusted i know i couldn't be trust as a kid, what about you could you?

I have to agree with you on this. There is a large population of students in every high school who are not college-bound, and will graduate (or not) without any job skills. My brother -- who just retired after 35 years of teaching high school -- and I have had many conversations along this line and we agree there needs to be a return to trade school classes in our school systems. And as for the dropout rates cited in the recent Daily Breeze article, they are not completely accurate. LAUSD counts a student as a dropout EVEN if they are going to a continuation school, or are enrolled in adult education classes. Apparently, a student attending any type of nontraditional schooling is still counted as a dropout in LAUSD's statistics. |

Hey M. Perez: Your daughter's well on her way to being a teen mother and gang member, if she's not already. No escuela, ma.

Okay, for all of you who think parents don't care or that all these parents are on welfare, I ditched just about the entire 11th grade. Both my parents had full-time jobs and cared very much about me but I was a very rebellious teen and nothing they did seemed to work. I had to finally realize that the only person I was hurting was myself. I got back on the right path and, through night school, finally received my diploma. I had several friends go through the same thing and all their parents worked and cared about them too.

High school students can take classes at SCROC in Torrance for free. |

\Just be quite.“Yea their my kids. I gave birth to them, but its not my fault. Its societies fault.” When I missed school it was fathers problem, and in turn he made it my problem. Own up people get your child in control. Way to go gov. Xoxo Union man |

Yes, it is about time to have parents take responsibility for their children's actions. As a mother of two teenagers I feel that we need to be involved as much as we can in their lives.

You mean like the former Sheriff of Orange County's kid? |
|
There were a couple of names that sounded very Anglo-Saxon. Can we send them and the parents back to Europe? |

you know folks have selective amnesia |

This all started when it became illegal to spank the little bastards who deserved it. Since when did we start giving credit for things kids are supposed to do? We are truely a WEAK society.

I hate to blow anomolies into people's paradigms, but I have found, in my classes, that students who are here illegally, are more apt to be in class than students who have legal status.
I'm not trying to pass judgement, I'm just stating that from my own experience, what I have seen. How do we know who is legal and who isn't? For the most part, we know, it may come up in conversation in class or something. The most common truant in my experience are lower middle class of all races. It's a game for many of them. |

Jack, how true, how true. But, it is ultimately the responsiblity of the parent to see that their child is in school. If you can't afford to live here, it's time to move to somewhere you can. Working two or three jobs to survive, isn't surviving. It robs you of all that is important. How many people, not just hispanic, but black, white, asian, anything really, are having to make that sacrifice. At a certain point, it's time to say it isn't working. Until people own up to the real responsibity in life, rearing one's child, nothing will change. |

Thank you "To The Point" for the welfare statement. I read between the lines. Too bad Crenshw couldn't.

It all depends on how you are raised. If you are taught right from wrong, and are consistently and constructively punished for the wrong, then you will consistently try to do the right. |

Hey, Delgadillo, it's spelled BRIGHT not BRITE. No wonder these kids are skipping school when programs designed to keep them in school are spelled incorrectly.
|
Google is your friend. The Breeze spelled it incorrectly, not Delgadillo. |

Too many babymaking machines who are not qualified to be parents. Sometimes I think birth control should be put in our drinking water and those wishing to be parents should apply for a license before being allowed to have "clear" water. |

One lasting area of change.
Ever since the article on Birmingham dropouts about three years ago, LAPD is often seen on my campus returning truant students. At first, I thought is was another effort that would die as soon as the public glare turned elsewhere, but to my pleasant surprise, it continues. When LAPD brings these kids back to campus, they give them a parting gift of a summons to appear in front of a judge where they routinely are fined, about $250 and assigned community service. Unfortunately, even this is not enough to dissuade many as they continue to ditch. |
