McDonald's news fries parents of allergic kids

Full story: The Orlando Sentinel

When a neighbor told Garmit Kaur that McDonald's had listed wheat--a taboo for her two children with food allergies--as an ingredient in its french fries, she flat-out didn't believe it.

We have a son that has Down's Syndrome along with being diabetic and also has Celiac. It really limits what he can eat. He loves to go to McDonalds so we usually get him the grilled chicken with no bun and french fries and a diet coke. This is infuriating to find this out..I wonder if the hash browns contain wheat? He eats those also.

I can tell you that I will NEVER trust them again. I am so sorry about your son's health problems, I have celiac so i can understand that side of it. There are good companies that do care about these types of things, we will all jsut have to work together to find out where they are.

PLEASE no one should sue McDonalds over the french fry issue. Restaurants volunteer this information and a mistake was made. We do NOT want to discourage other venders from committing to a gluten free menu or information.

Fiona,
What we want is to bring about greater public awareness about Celiac disease so that a law similar to the one that the FDA has in place for food manufacturers mandating their labeling of common food allergens/sensitivities is also made mandatory for restaurants/food preparers. We also want to set a precident for the importance of truth in food labeling for ALL.
Fiona, what has happened to those adversely effected by this is no different than you walking into a bar to order a Long Island Ice Tea (that is if you were a Long Island Ice Tea drinker), however this particular bartender had their own "secret/special ingredient" which when ingested by yourself caused irreparable damage to your esophagus and lungs. The only reason that you ordered this particular drink was because you have had it before at the same bar (different bar tender though) withoout ill effects. Come to find out the "secret/special ingredient" was liquid drain cleaner. Now since this "secret" ingredient is one that you instinctively know to avoid and would never have ingested had you been informed before hand, but yet an uncommon, undisclosed, unnecessary ingredient in Long Island Ice Tea, would you demand accountability from the establishment for hiring such a bartender and from the bartender direcly for their deliberate, intentional, reckless action? Let's get real, would you say, oops no worries since this was a new bartender to me?
Sincerely, Mama Bear

The only thing I know of that is gluten free was the ff because they are cooked in a seperate oil and isn't mixed with the other fried foods.

Have you ever experienced the symptoms of eating food containing gluten when you have an intolerance. It's not fun. Your body has to be on the diet consistently. A small portion of gluten ingested can send you rushing to the bathroom and can be violently ill.

When it becomes a class action suit then you can sue.

You think that you would have figured it out after a few 'reactions'. Good grief. I stopped eating Big Mac's eight years ago, BECAUSE, every time I ate one, I had bad reactions (similiar to what you describe). Don't behave like a moron! I don't even have this disease but I am not naive enough to eat the cr@p. I love those fries too! I only eat them about five time a year. I guess five times more than you will be eating now.

" check out the movie "supersize me" i wonder if you'll ever eat at mcdonalds again."

Oh that's ridiculous. That guy PELTED himself with so much food that he had no choice but to throw it back up. What happened to him he did to himself. Willingly. By choice.

People need to stop blaming food industries for their health and weight problems. We can make just as many bad choices at home.

We, as parents take on FULL responsibilty for knowing what is in the products we feed our kids. Especially, knowing that wheat / nut products may be in or have contact with other products that do. We have to be the ones to cut out the risks for them! Fast food is not nor ever was "good" for anyone.

Our society is so lacking in personal responsibility! Please teach your children differently. Don't be so determined to sue corporations who are providing a service that we have the OPTION of using. Educate yourselves and make decisions that are best for your families individual needs.

God bless you.

Morgan Spurlock (spelling?) ate about 5,000 calories a day in that movie. No wonder he had health problems.

SoSo Whaley (spelling?) also undertook a McDonald's diet after Spurlock's movie came out. She somehow ate only 2,000 calories a day on her McDonald's diet and lost weight.

Daily Horoscope for December 10

Aries

One of the family needs plenty of love and attention today, but the trouble is that you may not be able to spare the time. If so, you'll be consumed with guilt and self-reproach, and this may become so strong that it casts a blight over the day. So do what you can to let them know you're thinking about them, but resist the temptation to berate yourself over things you can't change.
