a lot of people with food stamps are 50 - 100 pounds overweight.
There was an article in the paper yesterday about an older woman who was arrested for taking an envelope full of money left behind at a Walmart. The article said the woman was buying groceries with her food stamps and specifically listed what she bought: milk, donuts and pie. Nutritious, huh? Not to mention the costs of the donuts and pie could have probably bought a complete dinner for four.

That's the problem right there, cell phones are now deemed a societal necessity. I move that we should provide the lazy good for nothings collecting food stamps with a cell phone stipend as well.

Cell phones are most certainly a luxury as is cable TV, Internet access, email, and video games. You can most certainly live and thrive without any of these items. You have spoken like the true socialist that you are.

"Enjoy your double latte at Starbucks later and add a dollar at the register, then you can feel like your helping someone."

Who the F are you to admonish someone because they have the financial resources to enjoy a beverage from Starbucks? I had one this morning and it tasted great and I didn't feel like I owed anyone anything. Shove your sanctimonious BS up your socialistic a*s*s.

If these people collecting food stamps don't like the situation they are welcome to join the productive members of society by getting a job. Paychecks come several times a month and in some cases every week; almost instant access to cash.

Just so you know, a family of 5 gets about $675 a month in foodstamps if they are in the lowest income bracket. That is only for food, no non-food items.
You would probably be surprised at the number of neighborhood grocery stores (not the big chain stores) which will accept food stamps for cartons of cigarettes, beer, wine, hard liquor, etc. then report them as legitimate food sales when they redeem the food stamps with the state. Too many abuses, not enough oversight in this program.

Seriously if you cannot make 542 a month work for groceries there is something wrong. I have a family of five and with the use of coupons and smart shopping we spend far less than this and we eat very well. The food stamp system is a joke!
I think what needs to happen is that these individuals receiving food stamps need to be taught how to shop. It would make a big difference. A witnessed a lady buying food the other day with food stamps and a lot of it was prepackaged frozen foods. This type of food is often not healthy and is usually very expensive. It is a matter of teaching people proper healthy choices!
I spend about $525.00 a month on food for a family of 5 and that includes all the things food stamps don't cover, soap, detergent and so on......You better believe that smart shopping goes a long way!

You choose to feed your family over a cell phone you idiot. And if you actually live in a homeless shelter I think you have other priorities that need to be addressed over owning a cell phone. And if you actually have an apartment or house there is the option of having a LAN line for godsakes.

What happened, did regular land line phones stop working all of a sudden?

I work hard as does my husband. I have three daughters. Two teenagers that both work. Guess what? They pay for their cell phones. They learning how hard work pays the bills and can give you nice things. Nothing in life is FREE! There are times a treat myself to a specialty coffee. Why shouldn’t I? I have worked since I am 15 years old. I deserve a little something extra. I chose to work hard. There was a time I worked 2 jobs.

This is absolutely true. I cook almost every meal that I consume, and my food costs are quite low. I do not eat processed, frozen or over-packaged foods. I buy a lot of fruits and vegetables, some starches (pasta or rice) and some meat. I prepare everything I eat from scratch. Somehow I manage to do this despite having a full-time job. That people who are unemployed cannot make the same effort is absolutely ridiculous. The food choices of many on food stamps are symptomatic of ignorant and lazy minds.

As for the cell phone being a necessity argument, what a joke! The following things are necessities: water, food, shelter, and clothing. Cable TV, internet, cell phones, iPods,$200 sneakers, etc., do not fall under the realm of necessities. Get a clue!

I never had a cell phone as a kid, and neither did my parents. Why are they all of a sudden a necessity? Life seemed better 15 years ago before cell phones....

If an emergency comes up what do expect her to do,use a payphone? Your bias is typical. You assume she sits and BS's all day and sends 100 text messages. You don't have access to her call logs so stop judging how she's using her phone. Enjoy your $8.00 coffee genius.

Just go use a smelly payphone, if you can find one and if it works and if you have change. No ones forcing anyone to buy a cell phone. Opt out!

I always joke with my friend that living in a cardboard box underneath lower Wacker is the way to live. No bills to pay, no car to take care of, no appointments needed. No need for cell phone, computer, and overpriced cable TV. Pee where ever you want. All of these 'necessities' in life are really just a burden.
