They're absolutely right--the ceremony is terrible. My advice toward making this stressful evening wonderful instead of stressful is to simply not go. Rather than listen to speeches filled with worn-out, disingenuous platitudes that will have the audience yawning (and the motivational impact of which will be crassly dismissed, if not forgotten, by the time everyone reaches the door) I suggest that you instead be a true American: sit at home, watch a situation comedy, and take the advice of the cheesy commercials.
The only downside to this suggestion is that you miss all the wonderful memories caused by the stress of worrying that your son will trip and fall as he trudges forward to receive his diploma. And you'll miss the fear that the folder he receives won't contain a diploma but instead a note written by the Principal/Football Coach stating that summer school is required.
You must have a really low opinion about your son. If he isn't worried about all this nonsense, why should you be?
My advice: enjoy watching your son put closure on 12 years of superficiality and torment. Then go home, listen to your CD of Billboard's Hot 1978 (or whatever year YOU graduated), and have a Jack and Coke.

I hope that your son learned to spell and punctuate sentences properly.

Gee Dad, aren't you being sort of CLASSIST? We know this is the 1950s and the age of conformity and all, but "Guest" is from Arkansas and likely from compromised economic circumstances quite unlike our conditions in Mayfield. Gee, Dad, you're sort of a bastard. You're nodding your head in agreement so I'm going to take this opportunity to go out and by a jalopy.(The Beaver will probably try to peel off Judy's plaid skirt.)

Two words: PEPPER SPRAY The natives tend to get restless during the ceremony.

My niece is also graduating from BHS this year. And just like with my own kids, I would not miss it! I can't imagine someone not wanting to go see their children or other friends & relatives be rewarded for 12 years of hard work. What's an hour or so compared to that?! One bit of advice - if several family members want to sit together, send some of them early to save seats! It fills up quick!
I would just like to say congrats to ALL area seniors. Enjoy your success - you have earned it. And congtats to the parents - when you see your child walk across that stage, all the sleepless nights, stress & fights to do homework, etc will all be worth it!
