Open records in Sheets case

It's been just over five years since James Sheets, a disturbed 14-year-old eighth-grader at Red Lion Area Junior High School, shot and killed his principal, Eugene Segro, and then took his own life.

And just how do you think the child's family and the principal's family felt when this headline jumped off the page at them. I have cancelled YDR, York Dispatch, and just today told the Sunday News to shove their great discounted offer this very afternoon. Go interview OJ.

I believe that this editorial shows absolutely no sympathy or understanding for the families of the victims, either those of Mr Segro or James Sheets. It is truly unfortunate that the editors of this paper feel it necessary to continually dredge up terrible events of the past in order to provide for sensationalism on slow news days.

First off it was Dr. Segro, not Mr. Segro. Second, I fail to see how anyone could figure out a way to stop anyone from commiting a crime like this. There are no magic answers to anything when determining if someone is going to perpetrate a specific action such as this.

In case you haven't noticed, the YDR editor likes anniversaries. It doesn't matter what the event was, but 25, 50 , 5, 10 , years "later" seems to be a big thing. As these people have no vision or investigatory skills, what else can one expect?
Trying to find an "answer" to a tragedy like that one is silly and, might we note, impossible. The paper is yet again trying to act like it "cares," but it is really more like "enquiring minds want to know" stuff.

With the exception of the idiotic, adolescent response from DARK STAR (read comment #4), I have to agree with all others here. I, too, have had enough of this newspaper publication. I've tried to cancel my subscription, but my husband is an avid comparison ad. shopper and missed the advertisement inserts! That, and the grocery store coupons, are the only reasons we renew our subscription to this lame, hillybilly newspaper. Wish they would hire some writers with better grammar skills, as well. Or do we blame the editors for that?

As a friend of the family of Jimmy I can tell you that it wasn't a good feeling. His parents want to know as much as anyone else why this had to happen. It is a sad tragedy and it is hard to understand but to keeping bringing it up in the news is causing pain and heartache to both families as well as all of those innocent students that had to witness this tragedy.

I completely agree with "Friend". What is the point of bringing up this tragedy and reopening old wounds? I am a former Red Lion student, and loved Dr. Segro. My mother worked at the Junior High, and was present that horrible day, and ended up having to retire because she never quite recovered. I slam a car door too hard and she ducks and starts crying. How do you think she reacted when she read the paper yesterday?!?! Let Dr. Segro and James rest is peace and their families move on.

Who is the YDR to decide what is and isn't supposed to be public knowledge? This has nothing to do with investigating the inner workings of a troubled young mind. It's all about the YDR taking the high-handed and sanctimonious position that they know what's best for this community. You can be assured that if this young man was black they'd be insistent about the right to privacy of the family.

Well, editors are, in fact, supposed to edit.
Then there is the editor-in-chief who believes in paragraphs of two sentences and not using words of more than two syllables. He really likes wring like that. Refer your husband to coupon bug.com .

First off I don't live in Gap, I don't know where that came from, I live in Dover. If the company that owned this newspaper had real reporters from this area we would have a better understanding of the areas new. Pay these people what they should be paid and give us a real feel for the community. I don't subscibe to the news papers. I read it online.

I cancelled the paper the day you plastered Jimmys moms picture on the front page. After 5 years you just can't let it go. The Segros and the Bakers have struggled to regain some sort of peace to move on. Why can't you let them have that? How do you sleep at night? IF there is any blame to lay for the incident of 5 years ago, it would be the school district. There was a young teen seeking help from his councelor. His parents were told "I don't want to get involved". Going over his head to the Superintendent they got the same answer. Pretty good chance it could have been avoided if someone at school would have cared enough. Those people have to live with that everyday. It's over, done. Why can't you let Jimmy, Dr. Segro and their families and friends rest? Don't you have anything better to do?

First off, who wrote this stupid article? No one had the nerve to put their name to it. It says "our opinion". Who's that? Do people not have feelings? What a wonderful start to a Mother's Day weekend. "Happy Mother's Day" to Jimmy's mom.(Yeah right!!) Do you people not realize what this does to the family and friends of both Jimmy and Dr. Segro when this is brought up time after time? Can you not let it rest. What happened is not going to change by bringing it up time after time. Jimmy was not "disturbed" or "mad". You people don't know him or know the "real story" so why don't you leave this story ALONE!!! Let Jimmy and Dr. Segro rest in peace and let their families alone!!!

This article just makes me laugh. Someone thinking they can solve the world’s problems of teen violence by magically finding the answers to why Jimmy Sheets did what he did, when NO ONE knows them. Wow. Whoever wrote this obviously must not have kids, and if they do I feel sorry for them being so oblivious to teenagers today. Because they must know their kid's every thought and feeling because of course something like this would never happen to their family, right? There are thousands of kids all around the world right now confused and probably having the same thoughts that Jimmy did, whatever they may be, but as parents, you would know if something was going to lead your son or daughter to the extreme that Jimmy went to, right? Well you don’t. It doesn’t matter how well you think you know your kids, or how happy you think they are, you just don’t know. So before people go writing articles on how “mad” Jimmy was, think about how you would want your son or daughter remembered if they were to die tomorrow. If this article were about this “concerned writer’s” child, and they had to bury their child 5 years ago, no way would they want an article written with this much disrespect towards their family.
Growing up with Jimmy and Baker family, and being two years older than Jimmy, it’s disgusting to read an article like this written by someone who doesn’t know anything whatsoever about Jimmy or his family. So when you find all your unknown answers to solve all of your psychobabble crap, THEN write an article on solving teen violence or something, but until then, take your article and shove it because you have no idea what you’re talking about and clearly need to find a hobby or something productive to do with your time if you actually found it necessary to write such a cruel article about a complete stranger.

Some of you have said that you know "the real story" here. I went to school with Jimmy and was a friend of his. I'm just curious because one of you earlier hinted that the school did something wrong involving him-which isn't surprising knowing red lion and the people who run it.

The article comes from the YDR editorial board. they are the "voice" of the paper.
