Full story: Chicago Tribune

Prosecutors offered a portrait Friday of a special-education teacher who they alleged progressively lost control during the first month of school, slamming one boy with autism into a brick wall and forcing ...

this is why i'll never go back to teaching. if the kids don't put you behind bars, other teachers will. what if the principal observed him and gave him a poor write up last year, telling him to gain more control of his classroom? what if the six children were having their own private fun and ganging up together trying to push him over the edge? all i can say is to the teacher that replaces him, have fun with tipped over desks and all the other crap these kids were doing, and you can't suspend, kick out, or write up special needs kids, in other words, you can't send them to the principal, so what is a teacher to do? sounds like this teacher was trying to do what all the teachers in the 50s, 60s, and 70s did...tough love. i've heard various reports on the trampoline incident, with three local papers mentioning nothing of the seizure, one said he had bruises, etc. these parents are spoiled and labeling children professional words when they should be calling them unexercised brats.where were all these special needs students in the 70s and 80s? with the awful pay and the risk of going to prison, i'm telling you now that public education will slowly bury itself in the next 100 years.

martin luther, thank God you won't be going back to teaching! Our children are better off for it! You haven't got the compassion or the understanding of any special needs child. Any time with you would only serve to make the child's emotional needs worse, not better.

I have an adult daughter age 25 with Autism. If we did this to her WE WOULD BE IN JAIL. so why feel sorry for a stress out teacher? Parents live with this DAY IN AND DAY OUT..THIS GUY ONLY HAS THEM FOR 8 HOURS~there is NO excuse for violence with disabled or autistic. when you need a break do it~! we all have bad days but this guy was PAID TO DO THIS~ why was it allowed to happen three or more times? he should have been removed after one.
I know some behaviors can drive you to the edge but the difference IS WE KNOW BETTER. they do not.
Schools need to do a better job of monitoring these situations. This was abuse plain and simple. and gee people with autism learn from The way THEY are treated . what kind of future damage have these kids aquired from the violence done to them? As if they do not have enough problems as it is~ Do not feel sorry for this guy~ it went on far too long~
People with autism often lack social skills to know what do to this why we have special education. They learn by Role Modeling Behaviors.
In the world of Low this is the lowest. If he was so educated he should have asked for MORE help or got some Anger Management for himself.
so do not feel sorry for the abuser here. BUT LOOK AT THE FACE OF THE ABUSED who did not even know the violence from their trusted teacher is something they do not deserve or have to tolerate.

how horrifying!! as the sibling of a severly austic man, I would absolutely want to do back to this "teacher" what he did to these kids who can barely help themselves!! Sick. Absolutely disgusting. How can we trust people to take care of our loved ones, Martin Luther? Years ago we didn't see this many special needs kids because they were being hidden at home or in institutions!!!

i've got two words for all of the blind: Anne Sullivan. What she did for Hellen Keller has gone down in history, and by today's standards it is considered cruel. To all of the spoiled parents who want teachers to pamper these kids, don't you realize that there isn't any learning going on anyway in the classroom? If none of you are teachers then you have to realize that schools today are giant malls, where kids carry their special fall clothes, jackets, mountain dew, ipods, cell phones, dorito bags, notes from friends and lovers, and can give a rat's buttock about education. they act up and have no respect for anyone. and on top of that, all of these new laws since the late 80s have allowed regular kids who are out of shape physically and mentally, who go home to parents watching surivior and cops, completely ignored, unloved and undisciplined, to be pampered, uneducated, and put in classes where the state law allows for absolutely NO discipline that normal kids recieved (kicked out, suspended, written up, sent to the principal, etc.). So now a couple of aids who saw this teacher trying to at least teach discipline to these spoiled brats, like that of Anne Sullivan, is going to be fired and put in jail because lazy aids who aren't smart enough to get a worthless education degree have nothing better to do than gossip like all educators and create havok in the press. well done!

if that same teacher SLAMMED ANY KID INTO A WALL OR TIED THEM TO A CHAIR WITH A JUMP ROPE IT WOULD BE ABUSE REGARDLESS IF THEY WERE SPECIAL ED OR NOT.

abuse is abuse.

so why do't you take UP A FUND TO PAY FOR THIS TEACHERS LEGAL DEFENSE SINCE HE SEEMS TO BE YOUR HERO.
because you are defending a man arrested for abusing handicapped kids and insulting every disabled american as being "spoiled" gee we wish they could JUST BE SPOILED INSTEADED THEY MEET FEDERAL GUILDLINES AS DISABLED. I guess you being the HUGE BRAIN YOU ARE DO NOT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO.

You know what, Im a mother of one of the Autistic children that attend that classroom. Brat's? How dare you! You yourself DO NOT know what its like to teach these children. In & out of school. These children have NO clue what the hell "tough Love" is. And if they did, how would a oarent even know if their child was non-verbal, as mine is. And as for the teacher..My son had him in summer school this past summer, and there was NOT one inccident like this. Did you ever stop to think that maybe he had problems outside of work that he had all bottle up. And he just started to explode? NOT that, that justifies what he did to these boys, because it dont, by no means. Until you yourself have a child with Autism, and you understand there disabilitiy, you shouldnt say such HARSH things about them!!!

Martin Luther, have no worries. I don't forsee any invitations
being extended to you to return to the classroom. Your comments make it quite obvious that you have no real knowledge of, or compassion for special needs kids or their families. It's this kind of clueless mindset, that makes it so hard for special needs kids to get the therapy and services that they need. You think these are simply disrespectful, spoiled children, with behavior issues. NOT !Please take the time to educate yourself. Autism effects
1 in 150 children ( 1 in 94 boy's). Autism is real ! There is something physically effecting these children. We need to
find it's origins. We need to find ways to treat and help these children to find a way to communicate....Open your eyes and your heart.

i hate to hear this. how come he chose to teach in special education if in the first place he cant handle these kids well? I am a mother of two child, both with autism. This really is a nightmare! I think the school should conduct a psychological exam for the sped teacher applicants for the sake of these kids' safety.
If he's(the teacher) not manifesting the same behavior before, maybe he needs to be checked now. He might be suffering emotional and behavioral disorder.

MARTIN LUTHER, are you that dull that you cant just look for another strategies in handling these kids if one strategy wont work? what have you learned from your school? thank God that you're not coming back to teaching. you know what?, putting our kids to your class is like putting them in HELL!why did you take up education in the first place? i think you didnt even know the signs of autism much more with the strategies.are you telling us that anne sullivan abused helen? do you know what is abuse and what is firmness and consistency? it think you should be placed in a mental hospital. i would like say CONDOLENCE to the family and the kids you were handling.I am a mother of two kids both with autism. i wish you can have one in your family so that you'll know how it feels but i think you're going to kill your child then.

THANK YOU Martin Luther for staying away from our children. They don't deserve someone so incredibly ignorant in a position of authority over them.

Hey! Martin Luther! Ya, hey you!!! Do you even know what you are talking about?! I am GLAD you didn't go back to teaching! The innocent children would do so much better WITHOUT you, teaching them with your sick ways of dicipline! And, by the way, I did a report of Anne Sullivan and she SO did not abuse Hellen Keller! I have read books on her AND Hellen Keller and she taught her to communicate. She was a sweet loving person who put a lot of good and love into this world! I have a 3 year old autistic brother, so I know what I am talking about!!!!!!!! Do YOU have an autistic person in your family?! Huh!? Do ya!!!! Do you think you know everything or something, cause EVERY SINGLE THING you have said on this site is W-R-O-N-G! Do I need to spell that out for you, or can you get out of your bubble long enough to understand? I am not trying to be mean, but seriously, if you ever tried to research the subject on autism and try to understand these sweet, loving children, you would understand. Oh, and F.Y.I: Autistic people are NOT spoiled brats! They are one of the best people to be brung to this Earth we call home!!!

I'm so sorry this is happening to your son and the other students in his class. I'm going through a much-less severe situation with a child who has been hurting my son on an ongoing basis. The principal has done nothing about it besides his half-assed attempts at investigating and interviewing the child at fault and witnesses to the behavior. So far, nothing has been done to stop the child or punish the child, and the principal hasn't even called the child's parents which he's required to do by state law.

I was advised to speak with the Superintendent of the school district. If you and your lawyer get other parents of the children who have been hurt to join you both in going to the Superintendent's office, they can't ignore that many parents (and a lawyer) standing in front of them, especially with your recorded evidence. Whatever you do, don't give anyone the original copy of that recording. Make sure you have extra copies of it before you go.

And if they don't immediately have the teacher arrested, protect your children from any other abusive teachers, and have that principal fired, then go to the media. I guarantee there will be public outcry to hear that children, especially special needs kids, are being hurt by teachers and the principal thinks there's no problem there! And you have recorded evidence to prove that that's how he feels about it.

Please don't feel that people won't care about your child and the other children in his class because they're black. Most people will care. You're talking about children being hurt at school, where they're supposed to be safe, and then having a principal do nothing to protect his students. I know that these message boards seem to bring out all kinds of racists and bigots, but they're not representative of the general population. They're a minority who happen to be the most vocal about their ridiculous thoughts because they're too full of hate to keep it to themselves. Ignore them. They show that they're not worth listening to the moment they open their mouths.

I wish you the best of luck in your situation. I'll be thinking of you and your son.

Many autistic children are very difficult to manage. Parents can do it with love because parents, for the most part, have the patience for their own children, where others do not.

To the posters out there who believe that autism is merely a "label" for out of control kids, you obviously have not done your research and are in no position to say anything about this matter. And just so you know, nobody here seems to care that you believe that "though love" is the answer, so stop trying to convince people. It's a new world now and people don't care what ignorant people who promote abuse as a way to keep children under control have to say.
My brother is autistic and I am a family friend of two of the three abused boy's families. I also met a woman who has an autistic son who was abused AT THE SAME SCHOOL 10 YEARS AGO. It's shocking that school districts aren't doing the background checking that they claim is happening. You'd think they would take into consideration while hiring this man that he was charged with battery back in '98.

I feel very saddened when people who do not understand Autism say that our kids are spoiled brats. The sunday school teacher at my Church of 6 years asked me not to bring my 4 and half year old Autistic daughter to Sunday School because she can not teach about God to the other children because of my child's need for movement. And she forwarded a website which deals with juvenile delenquents via e-mail so that my daughter will learn to be normal and not be excused of her unacceptable behavior. Needless to say I am no longer in Communion with that Church and my husband is no longer a Christian.

As a volunteer Sunday School and a teacher of children with Autism, I can understand your frustration. Please remember that the Sunday school teacher is a volunteer and her "real" job is in an office, a bank, or a restaurant. To her naked eye, your child is different from the ten or so other kids who will sit and listen to a Bible story.
I would speak to your pastor or religious director. What has your church done in the past for children who had Down's syndrome, hearing loss, or any other disability? Hopefully, they received instruction one-on-one or from a teacher who knew how to teach special-ed kids.

Keep praying, maybe God is trying to lead you to a place where you and your child will be accepted.
We're (churches that accept all people) out there. Keep looking.
