For a starter why not get those kids out of Fort Loudon and into a juvenile detention facility instead of returning them to their obviously negligent parents.

So....let's take the Fort back folks! Lets ban together as a community and help prevent something like this from happening again. Watchdog program...sounds good...get the loud bikes and 4 wheelers off the roads....get the kids home before dark....get the kids on the bus and to school in the mornings....call someone when you see something out of place or when the kids are on the streets hanging out after hours....take license numbers and photos of all the illegal road traffic ....make the quiet mufflers go back on the bikes and 4 wheelers....check your buildings for attempted breakins....install cameras on your property...in other words...if it takes a Village to raise these kids then so be it.....make an effort and take the Fort back.....we have a great little town to be proud of so lets show these kids we want to leave them a town to be proud of too...even though they don't care now....someday they will Thank us for it.....so call the parents, call the police , take photos and log the inappropriate behavior for proof if and when you need it...Parents, get your kids under control, before you are in a similar situation like this..organize a program that will help keep us all safe and restore the word QUIET, to our quiet little town!

How about a community center or some after-school programs for Fort Loudon youth?

People into naming calling...yea that is very adult of them.
Have the boys do community service or a work program to pay for what they damaged.

The one boy DEFINITELY will be working to pay back what he did. As for stealing things - the one that everyone is trying to pin the most on was not in that house prior to that Saturday, if he was in it at all. He had been grounded for not doing his homework. So for the 3 weeks prior to that, he was at home and not allowed outside but only to feed his dog. His parents have searched their house for anything that might have been from that house and have found nothing.

YES Kids in Ft Loudon NEED something to do. There is nothing there for them, at all, and yes they will get into things. That is in no way an excuse to do what they did, b y no means at all. But to call the parents negligent, I know for a face that the father and stepmother of the boy who lived in that house in the past are NOT negligent!! They are VERY concerned, because he was to be at the other boy's house with that boys parents! Yes, they could have called and checked on him. But they had no reason to, because he had never done anything of this nature before! You can say that I am partial, because maybe I am. I am in no way sticking up for the boys. They did wrong. PERIOD. But know the whole story before you start criticizing the families, because there is always more to a story than what you know.

Nothing for kids to do? Baseball sign ups this past Spring yielded no teams. Not enough kids to make a team in any category. THere can be plenty of things to do, just have to have the attitude that you want to do it. Don't blame the town, blame the people raising the kids.

The town does NOT have to provide activities for children. The beauty of living in a small town is that families can be close and kids can get fresh air. It's a shame that parents can't be a little more involved with their offspring and think of creative outlets for their little angels. Those kids need to pay hard earned cash for the damage they have done. I'm sure there are plenty of yards that need raked and weeds that need pulled. I look forward to a PO article explaining in detail the punishment these two boys get. My kids wouldn't be able to sit for weeks if they did something like this!! And no iPods, phones, computers or TV for 6 months!!!!

Horrific.

What do you mean, "if he was in it at all." The two boys were CAUGHT inside the house, by police. While perhaps one was the ringleader and the other was the follower, both boys were in the house when police arrived on Sunday. They both were taken into custody as they came out of the house. Sounds to me like parents who don't want to believe their son could do any wrong.

you people say find things for the kids to do, well don't just talk about it,DO IT. open the community center for them and have ball teams. Have movies, games, excercise programs, basketball or what ever it takes. you can't just talk about it, as parents you need to take turns and set up programs for them.8119

I have lived in this community for 30 years, there have always been mischievious boys and girls in the area, but this goes way beyond that. They destroyed items that can never ever be replaced. How would the parents and/or kids feel if this type of incident happend to one of their grandparents or parents, they would want revenge and justice to be served... The boys should have to wear huge signs and be put on the coummity center band shell stage at the yard/craft sale at the community grounds this weekend, with all there cell phones, i-pods, psp's,play stations and whatever else they own so the public can smash and pi** on all their stuff

Typical product of piss poor parenting. Parents are all too concerned about giving their children choices and providing excuses for unacceptable behavior. They are more concerned that their kids be "happy" instead of teaching them the "way" which is often times unpleasant and confrontational because it requires mandates to serve as guides. We ,who parent, know how difficult these situations become but we are the adults and being adults means, that no matter the inconvenience, we make the decisions... period.

Five generations of my family have lived in Fort Loudon in the same home. Growing up in our small town, crime is rarely a problem. I've lived in York, Lancaster, Philadelphia areas for 7yrs for college/work...now those are communities who have fearful, dangerous crimes. Heck, Chambersburg & Hagerstown have high crime rate. All of these communities have youth activities and crime watch programs.
To describe Fort Loudon as an area filled with raging youths commiting "crimes", riding loud vehicles and 4-wheelers...come on people. We should cherish and be blessed that those are the least of our worries. In my opinion, Fort Loudon is a great little town to raise a family that we don't have to fear life-threatening crimes that other communities have. Yes, things have changed in our small town but we are FAR from having a problem. Not much for youths to do...Cowen's Gap, Bear Valley, Birth Place, and plenty of outdoor activities with imagination.
My condolences to the Kirpatrick family for the lose of precious heirlooms; I can't even imagine my family heirlooms being damaged. But, heirlooms are "things". Remember, we don't have to fear for our lives like communities nearby.

I know one of the families involved and secondly, you have no idea the personal circumstances surounding this case. Let me make the following comments:
Doc: If you think for one minute that there is "*****poor parenting" going on. I do agree that it was wrong yet, you are just another person who is judging. You have no idea. None of you people commenting have any idea of the people you are effecticting by leaving such remarks. Children make mistakes. NO ONE should judge these children. Put aside your anger and judgments and think what this situation and these comments would do to your family and friends. Shame on those who are adding to the anquish. I stand by my friends. I stand by them as a mother and someone who has been there. Perhaps living in a small town is pleasant however, it only adds to the narrow views voiced here.

Daily Horoscope for December 9

Sagittarius

Watch out. Your mind is working overtime in full analytical mode, but you may be leaping to unfounded conclusions and reading too much into situations. The result of all this is that you might start to suspect someone's honesty or loyalty, and wonder what exactly they're up to. Don't accuse them of anything awful just yet because it may turn out that you were totally wrong about them.
