I'm 34 years old (not a kid) and one of my friends took me up there late one night on our way home from Stillwater a few years ago. I had never heard of the place before, but it was absolutely creepy! Lights were on, but nobody anywhere was home... I have wanted to go back during the day sometime but never have gotten around to it. Very, very strange.

Rename the subdivision Stepford, put up a gate and charge admission. America, what a country!

Do all the residents scurry inside and peek out from behind the curtains when an 'outsider' drives through?

It is creepy! It reminds me of the movie "The Village". Back when I was a teenager, we used to "cruise" around Gray Cloud Island.

I grew up in that area and have never seen Jackson Meadows. Never wanted to. I've heard about it and it lessened any desire I may have had to see it. Thankfully, I now know which part of town to avoid when I go home for a visit.

However, these houses are FAR FAR from the same. Each one is different looking, just same colors. Take a drive out there for yourself sometime. I grew up in Marine, and this development freaks me out too! It's weird. You get a funny feeling in your tummy while there.... just absolutely strange and beautiful all wrapped up into one odd package. ZenBirdist wrote: <quoted text> Hi, Virgil. I get that same feeling when I pass by housing developments along 94 or 694 that are rows and rows of grey cookie-cutter houses. It brings my recollection to a book I read as a child called "A Wrinkle in Time". Very eerie how each structure is identical to the next, spaced perfectly apart, and as you noticed, devoid of humanness. I'm old school, and the older and stranger the structure, the more appeal it has for me. The developments I cite have the undisputable benefit of convenience to freeways, which I understand is priceless to many commuters. I'm curious, though, what the attraction is for residents of Jackson Meadows, being that the development is tucked away in a decidedly off-the-beaten-path locale. Stillwater, being the oldest town in Minnesota, is a gem of an architectural timeline and for most residents it's that quaint uniqueness that drew them to the area. Zen

I know tons of people who live there and their kids are out playing all of the time. They have flour wars (yes, a little unorthodox, but so are other children)

What I wan't to know is why when you go in there at night to check it out, you have people following you and numerous KKK markings in a nearby bridge, somethings definately different about the area forsure.

I've not been there myself and cannot comment on grafiti that may be in the area, but if kids were driving around to check out my house or property at night, I think I'd be keeping a close eye on them, too. Why would you want to check them out at night anyway, it's dark and you can't see much.

Virgil Flowers wrote: <quoted text> Jackson Meadows, I believe was among the first 'cluster developments' in this region. A large parcel of land, several hundred acres, formerly a farm, is put into a preserve, with the houses, roads, utilities clustered together. This creates a density similar to traditional 5-20 acre lots, with more open space. I believe it to be a valid concept, but this development takes the 'communal' appearance to an uncomfortable level for me. It's a very classy area; about 1 mile from St Croix river, a restored prairie and wooded area....just very uniform, and too austere for my tastes. As though one would take one of the urban housing projects you describe, drop it in the middle of a farm field, and let the weeds grow. And as I stated earlier, in spite of numerous drives, and bike rides through this place, I've rarely seen more than 1 or 2 people, no kids toys in the yards... I fully expect to see Rod Serling in a dark suit, with a heater, standing in the road. I live in the St. Paul suburb of Shoreview, in a large 1970s neighborhood of about 3-4 styles of rambler homes. While the house are different-colored (some with brick facades), they don't have near the uniqueness and character of the Jackson Meadows home (despite the whitewash). I was just there today at a cyclocross race, and while I didn't see many residents 'out and about', I did see a few of them behind their huge windows viewing the race. Get this straight, people: suburbanites are usually overweight and found either in their cars or their homes - Jackson Meadows in no different from any suburb in that respect. I did not, however, see many people driving in and out - perhaps that is because they had no need to be out driving - that they are probably happy to be where they are at!

Another thing that's weird about this place is that it's got a big almost "watch tower" at the front. It's the only thing that's black and it's immediately when you get to the beginning of the one road that goes through it.

I find it weird that an architect builds a community and people are getting on other peoples cases about wanting to see it. I want to see it. Architecture is an art form and there's nothing wrong with admiring it. Vandalism would be a problem, but that's the same everywhere. If you want to see it, go see it!
