I am writing as a parent and a grandparent.I believe we have a responsibility to our young,as teachers and guides passing along information we have gathered through out the course of our lives, whether it may be personal, educational or family related.Being responsible in our actions speaks volumes and displays character.Young people follow positivity and creativity. What message are we sending with the closing of 204 Depot St???I am one of the 5 original clients of 204 Depot St. which opened its doors in 1971.My hats off to Dick Sears and people like him who had the insight to begin such a program.Good luck to all the staff,Its all about choices we make my young brothers choose wisely...

Sorry kurt, but being conservative these days means spending $100 to avoid spending $10. So long as poor people don't get it...

Maybe those of you who love the 204 program and Benn School have no clue abou the "children" going there. They are not just kids with home problems and behavior issues. Majority of them are convicted juvenile offenders who can't be put in jail due to their age.
Wow just wow, aren't you all bunch a bit old to be trolling? As a reformed delinquent/juvenile from 204 I just want to say "Fuck you" and your petty ignorance of just how the system works. Here I was just trying to see what exactly happened and I stumble across this bullshit. Yeah your thinking "Just look hes swearing hes not helping his case at all" like I fucking care. I'm pissed and I'm expressing my anger through profanity just to show you how pissed I am. Firstly I tip my non-existent hat to those of you that lived in the same town and spoke up, thank you.
Now to shed a little light on how the whole system and anarchy worked in 204 that made it more effective and unique then other programs. The whole way you would get in 204 was through your social worker. Don't know what a social worker is? go look it up and try to fix a little of your massive ignorance on the subject.
You were then interviewed while you stayed at 206 (temporary holding house for juveniles with a court date), it was then that they would decide if you were a good candidate for the program. If you weren't then you got shipped to Benn School or other places. Being at 204 was a privilege not a punishment, we just didn't realize it at the time.
204 Depot is not like Benn School, there was a kid that got kicked out of 204 went to Benn and came out an unchanged kid 4 months later. How do I know this? I met the prick by chance during a store run the day he got released. The only thing that changed about the kid was he had a different haircut, I can't say anything about Benn school cause I haven't been there. But they failed on that one.
Anyway there's no reason for me to bash another program while I'm ignorant about its workings. 204 was set up with a punishment system that was "Peer" run, sure the staff did their own punishments and enforced rules but for the most part the 12-13 boys that lived in that house held their peers accountable. What was breaking the rules? Swearing infrount of staff, not doing your daily chores, leaving wet laundry downstairs overnight, doing drugs(in very rare cases), not taking your medications, basically anything non compliant or done to hurt others. At the same time everyday near the end of the day the boys and staff would come together as a group and go over those fines. Voteing on them whether they were fair or if it even deserved to be a fine. Telling our sides of the story as the person being accused or the accuser. Then through the staff fines which for the most part were absolute.
Fines would mean losing your chance to gain "Dayfree status" (over 5$ in fines/had to have under 3 weeks) which allowed you to go out on walks and go to your appointments by walking. That would lead to a higher status to go on weekend trips to home (though I don't remember the name.) From there you would go on daily planned trips home during the weekend but if you didn't keep your fines low you would temporarily lose that status (and that often happened). It was always a struggle to stay under each week, and fine's delt with ACTUAL MONEY!
MONEY THAT WE EARNED! Because in 204 we worked, actual real jobs. Thats probably more then I can say for some of your deadbeat high schoolers. We worked on a crew of 7 at a time at Mt. Snow. Splitting, snow removal, landscaping, garbage picking, decorations, ect. Minimum wage and real hard work that most of you would refuse. Those who had dayfree were allowed to apply for jobs outside, but most of the time landscapers would request an assistant from us. I bet I did some of your flower beds at some point, still think we're all a bunch of car crashing manics?

??Budget cuts????In the Socialist Republic?? Do we not have unlimited funds for social programs. Our Ultra/Liberal/Democrats in Montpelier can fid funds for a TOURIST CENTER. Our Ultra/Liberal/Democrats {Senator Leahy & Snaners Rep Welsh} in Washington DC Can find funds for train service to get TOURIST to ski resorts. Am I wrong or does this not show the FLATLANDER TOURIST is more important than the youth of Vermont?

Of course he bought other cars for the program, cars break you illiterate moron. The cars that 204 had was so they could travel to Mount Snow and back on a daily basis where that same care was used to haul a trailer of "Blocks" to be split. Used to carry loads of wood to be delivered at each of the 242 condo's, or carry the shovelers up and down the massive complex in the winter. If a car is used like that constantly it begins to rack up miles, the more miles it racks up the more repairs it requires. There's also taking them back and forth to therapists- groceries- other.
Im not sure if this is corret now, but it was 5 years ago.

It is a shame this program was shut down. I was a resident of 204 for 18 months and without the lessons learned through that program I can only imagine where I'd be. Instead, I'm a Sgt in the United States Marine Corps with multiple deployments under my belt and a wonderful family. It hurts me to think kids are not getting the opportunity that was given to me. I can never thank Mr. Sears or Mr. Allard enough for there dedication to troubled youths. Semper Fi and hopefully this program can be brought back some day.

Daily Horoscope for May 25

Taurus

Try hard not to let money or possessions come between you and a friend today, unless it's over something that has got to be sorted out before it goes any further. For instance, if someone owes you money and has consistently failed to pay it back, this is a good day for mentioning it to them and finding out what's going on. If necessary, you may have to be quite vehement.
