Maybe it is time to teach coping skills in our schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. That is half the problem. Maybe rather than drinking or drugging to make problems temporarily "go away", students could learn how to face their problems head on and make them go away and stay away.

Bring back the D.A.R.E. program. It's a great program.

"The theory is that people are going to do what is perceived as socially acceptable. The idea is to change the social norms on substance and alcohol abuse." - quote
If this is the case, it is important to specifically prevent risky and young age alcohol use. However, a father having teaching his 17 or 18 year old son to drink responsibly with a beer at dinner should not be prevented. |

Come on, people. The poll of high school SENIORS was taken in June? Think that would skew the poll?
These government agencies depend upon funds that come their way if our kids are "in crisis". There is an economic incentive to make problems. Follow the money. So we exacerbate the problem by driving teen drinkers and drug experimenters into programs that label them and get them involved with the legal system. There should be ways that young people can learn to drink responsibly. In Europe there are graduated ages for alcohol consumption (i.e., lower ages for beer and wine) and they don't seem to have the problems we do. |

This program is about three generations too late. Many kids who are underage drinkers see it as a perfectly acceptable thing to do. If there is a way to make drinking and drug taking less glamerous, that would help. Adults who provide for underage drinkers need to be held responsible.

1 Parental guidance, and education are necessary when adressing the problem, holding teenagers responsible for poor decisions would definitely decrease the incidence of underage consumption! What ever happened to strict discipline? Can't parents smell alcohol on their teens breath? Oh that is right, they do not wait up for their kids anymore, they do not want to be stuck with a whiney grounded teenager in the house on week ends, after all,it was only a couple of Beers, and Junior wasn't the one driving! It is his friends fault,it is the other kids parents who are responsible,it is the fault of the store where they got the Beer,we had no idea he was drinking,we were in bed when he came in! The bottom line is that kids are always going to experiment, and when nothing really bad happens the first time, they are going to go back for more, parents need to step up to the PARENTING PLATE and get tough! |
