1 REVISED STATEMENT I know someone who is going to go there soon! Is it really bad? What kind of crimes are commited? What is the crime rate on oneonta campus or in residence halls? The girl is going to get another chance at getting a job and a GED and I dont want her to go in an environment that is just as rough as being at home! Please offer some advice! Thanking you in advance for your time! -Star |

I'm not very familiar with Job Corp, but I have a student who really wants to go into it. He's started hanging out with a really tough crowd and a couple of his 'friends' are going there. He's had some trouble with class work, but never with the law. Is this a good choice for a 16 year old trying to escape curfew from his mom?
Thanks for your help!! |

1 I do not want to list the outrageous negative things going on at Woodland for fear of being found out and getting fired. Fear is the operative word here. George Bush could get lessons from Woodland management in how to keep people fearful. |

I understand you fully but have you actually spent time with these "city punks" and "gang creeps" or had a conversation with them. I bet you could never walk a day in their lives because you would not know what to do with yourself. There is a screening process before you enter JobCorps and where you go is based on what trade you decide to take up. I'm not trying to take up for them but you have to see it from another light also. There are many reasons why different incidents happen and to tell you the truth many "city punks" or "gang creeps" conduct these events because they feel this is what you expect. You talking about moving the center to the city, well if you did your research the centers upstate provide better courses then the ones here in the city because either there is not enough space or there are not enough funds. Are you will to spend your money to find a place in the city for the same things that are offered elsewhere? I though not. Ok, enough of you, friscorod I know plenty of people who have worked there. Are you looking for anyone in particular?

Well I go to the Gary Job Corps in San Marcos, Tx, and we have just as much problems on campus. Gary Job Corps is the largest Job Corps Campus. I am a resident at Job Corps and personally i couldnt say that i hate it, but i couldnt say that i love it. There are always things happening here too with the students and crimes. There is always drama! I've been here for half a year and i already got my GED and im waiting to finish my trade. Its been hard there were a lot of times where i felt i just wanted to go home because of all the things that go on here on campus. There are always fights and sometimes it gets real tense on campus between everyone and its like its all in the atmosphere and sometimes riots break out. From what ive experienced here and from other comments that ive read about the other Job Corps i can say that wherever you go there is always going to be some kind of illegal activity going on, and not just on the campuses but everywhere in life. You just have to learn how to deal with it.

I have worked for Job Corps for my past 15 years and have found the people who work at the centers and most students who enroll, are there to make a positive difference in their lives. Sure it takes hard work and a dedication to change, and the staff make the difference because of their dedication to motivate, educate, and enhance young adults to reach their potential. It isn't easy, but when the "light goes on" in a young person's mind, body and soul...it is very rewarding! I have been to many centers, and although they have their nuances, they must all comply with the Department of Labor policies and procedures. That includes ZERO TOLERANCE. One hears more about terrible incidences at college campuses and high schools than Job Corps. Thank God we have a federally funded program that promotes success in our at-risk youth. Obviously the public school system failed these young folks. My final words are... if YOU are a young person, that truly desires to stop wasting time watching Jerry Springer, you feel that school is a waste of your time, so you cut classes; and some of you even have a drug or anger problem, I emplore you to go to your nearest Job Corps recuiter. They are in the phone book, and on the net. Don't waste your life away. There are people who care about you and want you to make a productive and proud life for yourself. You make it or you waste it. It's your call. |
