I have been kite surfing in California for 20 years and I am a proponent of the sport but if any of you have been out on Ft. Lauderdale Beach where these kite surfers are you will know that it is an accident waiting to happen. One of these out of control kite surfers is going to smash his kite into someone lying on the beach and kill them. If you watch them, you will see that many of them have a problem landing the kite on the sand when they are done. Stay the hell away from that area is my advice.

I know Kevin to be a really good guy as a neighbor and a friend. A couple weeks ago he was tweeking my computer (for free) when he noticed the breeze building to about 10 knots and headed off for the beach. He is well liked by his neighbors, his lovely girl friend and now his Mom is in town as he lies in Broward Generla's intensive care unit. Even his beloved Golden Lab dog seemed to sense something wrong this afternoon .
For those posters who will insist on bashing Kevin after this post, then I feel even more sorry for you than Kevin.

That spot across the street from Oasis restaurant is busy with tourists,A1A street traffic, sailboats, concrete walls..........look for more spectacular kiting incidents to come from here, including a huge lawsuit for city of Fort Lauderdale.Do your kiting in unobstructed areas like Key Biscayne.

Our thoughts and prayers are with this young man and his family. A terrible unfortunate accident. Wishing him a speedy recovery. No reason for the crass sarcastic and even cruel remarks. Doesn't anyone have any compassion there?

He's an adult ! You hear of these things happening every year when TS or Hurricanes hit ! People just don't use common sense. Mother nature always wins. Nobody is disagreeing that the guy is nice or what not, but please ! use common sense !

Everyone knows that animals have an innate sense of danger when the weather turns bad - such as tornadoes and other bad storms. Remember the story about all the animals running for higher ground ahead of the tsunami??? Same thing here. Kind of irrelevant, though. I have little sympathy for someone that (no pun intended) throws caution to the wind. He came ashore for safety when the "weather turned bad???" Excuse me, but the weather turned bad long before he decided to come to shore.

The forecast that afternoon was 20 knots...a blast for accomplished kite surfers. As the wind got beyond safe, the guy & his buds decided to stop...then an ACCIDENT happened.
What about driving & cel phone chatting, motorcycling without a helmet, rock climbing with no tether, showing off an "unloaded" gun?....point being that common sense is lacking all around us every day. In this case a very experienced kite surfer who was right in his element until an unanticipated gust slamed him down making a harness release impossible and he paid the price. Does NOT mean he is an "idiot" or any other derogatory name calling.

I really do hope he is okay. Do you think this crash might have improved his ability to detect danger? Hurricane force winds are here and he decided to go kite surfing? Lets just say he isn't the sharpest tack in the box. Hopefully he wouldn't reproduce.

why should this cause so much controversy? the guy, no matter how experienced, went out in the middle of a tropical storm. he apparently felt he was above mother nature, which is kind of like better than. it was poor judgement on his part. and for the rest of you who think this is your chance to promote your businesses by slamming the people who feel this was a dangerous thing to do, nope.its hard to understand how people want to beat each other up over some guy who was out showing off and got hurt. do any of you know what you sound like? some people may feel this sport is risky. i am one of them. i live on delray beach and see these guys nearly every day. it is really difficult to fly and control those things even in good weather. i sure hope this guy gets better. im sure hes not intentionally out there trying to kill himself though you do wonder why they were all out there on such a stormy day.

hopefully, he will sue the city and recover some serious coin. there were no signs up in the immediate area, no officials present, and large concrete structures that posed danger. Remember folks, we only need to show a bit of negligence, so i hope he sues for 10 million.

A "sudden" gust?
Aren't ALL gusts "sudden" by nature?
Wasn't it really the ONLY type of "gust" overall, that day?
Again, the SS proves to us what type of "rag" it really is.
