I got to see him, hear him play, shake his hand and even get close enough to kiss him on the cheek at aa performance at Harper's Ferry near Boston, MA several years ago. What an amazing presence. He was so full of spirit and light - that happiness came through in his music.

Did you go to school to learn how to be an idiot or did it just come to you?

The song he's best known for, "Bo Diddley" is derived from an old Bajan lullaby. My late mother sang a version of it to me as an infant and young child. "Hush little baby, don't say a word...Momma's gonna buy you a mockingbird...".

I lost my mother ten years ago this December 5th. We both knew Bo from our Creole connections, I'm sure she would be grieving. Peace to Bo and Mom both.

As to the scum above, I've got a bullet with your name on it.

Lee, I'm sorry, I meant the idiot who called Bo "Negro Gravy." The "Doctor." I think "Gill" was trying to correct any wrong assumptions people may have made from my post. Thanks, Gill.

Lee, I apologise to you. It surely was NOT you.

To "Doctor Steingold, if that is your real name":
I do have a nice, gold-plated bullet with your name ever-so-nicely engraved on it. Too bad Sherman didn't kill your ancestors so you would never have oozed from the slime in the first place.

"Cracker Noise"? What kind of racist bullshˇt is that? Tell you something, back then there wasn't a black musician who reached ANY degree of fame without being groomed (and PAID) by "cracker" producers and "cracker" promoters. All Bo Diddly ever did was complain his whole life that he got screwed by record companies, like he was helpless to do anything about it.
But Bo Diddly wasn't a special case. Back then, ALL musicians and performers (black or white or otherwise) were completely at the mercy of music industry executives.
In fact, it took a 19-year-old white boy from West Texas -- Buddy Holly -- to break the mold and prove that an artist could DO IT ALL himself, from writing and arranging to performing and publishing and promoting his own music. He proved that writer/performers didn't have to be slaves to managers and record company executives.
I don't care WHO "invented" a certain lick on a guitar, or WHO "invented" a stupid sound effect. You've gotta be able to take the music WAY beyond mere gimmicks before you can call it art -- that's something hip hop STILL doesn't understand today. The reason that a kid named Buddy Holly is remembered by music professionals to this day is because he inspired musicians to DO IT THEMSELVES, THEIR WAY.
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and hundreds of other huge names in music credit Buddy Holly as their greatest inspiration.
And, by the way, Buddy Holly was a huge Bo Diddly fan. Yet, compared to Buddy Holly, Bo Diddly's contributions to music are essentially lost to history.
Lost to history?, no, I don't really think so, for those who enjoyed his sojourn here along with his music, he will always be remembered for the enjoyment he brought to us, both as young people, and full adults. If you didn't like him, that's okay, not everybody likes everybody, but nonetheless, to those of us who were lucky enough to enjoy his brand of music, we will be the better for it. Did he influence a lot of people?, yes, he did. Did he contribute to what we know as rock n roll?, yes, he did. So say what you will, he is in the Rock n Roll hall, and he is very deserving of it, whether you believe that or not.
Maybe he didn't do all that you may suggest, but he did influence a lot of us as we started out on the path of life, and one can never take that away from him.

In 1958 my highschool friend and I hitch-hiked from Jackson to Greenwood, Mississippi to attend a Bo Diddley dance preformed at the Army National Guard Armory. It was a big event for me as I was crazy about Bo D. and had a least one of his albums. Most of the audience was made up of college students and I was in awe of the great dancers and beautiful girls. The thing that got me the most was the way Bo treated Jerome. Bo was definately in charge but his ego got the best of him. No one got hit with a Ugly Stick. The place was packed, it was 90 degrees that summer night and I was just a few feet from the band. All in all it was one of the most memoriable events I have ever attended. I have keep my ticket these fifty years
