Bill Moyers Journal: Former Industry Exec: Profits or Patients

Full story: www.pbs.org

WENDELL POTTER: The industry has always tried to make Americans think that government-run systems are the worst thing that could possibly happen to them, that if you even consider that, you're heading down on the slippery slope towards socialism. So they have used scare tactics for years and years and years, to keep that from happening. If there were a broader program like our Medicare program, it could potentially reduce the profits of these big companies. So that is their biggest concern. [...] You know, we have more people who are uninsured in this country than the entire population of Canada . And that if you include the people who are underinsured, more people than in the United Kingdom. We have huge numbers of people who are also just a lay-off away from joining the ranks of the uninsured, or being purged by their insurance company, and winding up there. And another thing is that the advocates of reform or the opponents of reform are those who are saying that we need to be careful about what we do here, because we don't want the government to take away your choice of a health plan. It's more likely that your employer and your insurer is going to switch you from a plan that you're in now to one that you don't want. You might be in the plan you like now. But chances are, pretty soon, you're going to be enrolled in one of these high deductible plans in which you're going to find that much more of the cost is being shifted to you than you ever imagined.

Fear tactics as practiced by democrats and republicans.

No complaints about healthcare.

This is the slanted journalism practiced by demoncrats.

If nationalized healthcare is so great, why has congress exempted itself?

Did Bill Moyers answer THAT question or did he re-gurgitate the donkey pr.

So interesting to see the process of propaganda.

Disgusting propoganda. It would be funny if it weren't so scary.

You'd have an easier time cherrypicking people with bad experiences in Canada and England into a room for a couple hours of sob stories and whining. You'd need a much bigger room, hell a whole Manhattan building to do it though.

Well, if all the money we pay insurance companies went to the government instead that would help with the health care system. Obviously it is broke when so many are without. Everyone should have to contribute to the health care system and do so from the salary you make. Also needed would be to revamp the liability issue as paying enormous amounts like 20 million for a injure finger is costing us money everyday. If doctors didn't have such high malpratice premiums that would also lower the cost of our health care system. Changes need to be made and to be done in a way everyone benefits and contributes.

The real question is, why is Congress (R)+(D) willing to deny health coverage and care for their constituents?

Is it wrong for the government to step up to the plate for an ill person that can't obtain treatment because of no insurance coverage? Is it WRONG? It must be the wrong thing to do, because so many oppose national health care.

Why aren't we entitled to the same health care that our elected officials enjoy?
WE ARE PAYING THEIR PREMIUMS!!!

I question their motives.
It certainly isn't compassion.

Canada's approx. spending on healthcare in 2008 was $172 billion, which is about 10.7% of the national GDP.

Averages out to approx.$5,200 per citizen.

The US has 10x our population. I cannot imagine the cost to the US govt/taxpayer if full universal care was ever implemented. Possible I guess, but there were have to be major cuts to defense or some other things or major taxes etc..

It is really sad that we have become a nation of beggers and freeloaders. Im reall sick of bustin my butt everyday to help support leeches and illegals. I think sadly people automatically think, oh, something for free, it must be the way to go, without thinking about the consequences of doing this. Talk about fear tactics, here we are again with the spin masters of pbs claiming this 46 million uninsured RUMOR is actually fact. Last time I checked undocumented illegals dont qualify as part of our population. And I, quite frankly am sick of paying for these people to pop out babies left and right anf not paying taxes in this wonderfuk country they choose to freeload in. If this is done, it will be almost impossible to undo. The quality of healthcare will be diminished to the point of yhe government rationing healthcare. Hard working taxpayers will be seeing a huge increase in our taxes to sustain this, and I dont know about anybody else but my back hurts from carrying these lazy clowns.

This is not about illegals. It's about the health care system which is truly broken and how to fix it. Illegals may be part of the problem in a small way but not the cause.

So interesting to see the process of propaganda.
Health care for all is wonderful as a concept until the socialists insist that working people should pay for their own health care and someone else's too.
That's the fundamental unfairness of it all. Then, the Democrats want to institute health care that is unaffordable, unfunded, and unfair.
Three strikes and they're out.

One way to determine that you are about to get screwed is when your insurer offers multiple plans instead of just one as a "added benefit".This always ends up allowing the insurer to cheat a majority of customers out of coverage while providing adequate coverage to only a few.Customers cannot compare benefits because most all have a different plan with different coverage. Most don't even know they have been cheated.

A government sponsored socialized health plan would drive out private insurance. The "slippery slope" reffered to is more like communism. It does not work because it has failed everywhere else it has been done. The words, progressive and socialist, as prefered by the liberal left appear more acceptable and much less frightening than the word communist is. Communism preys upon discontentment in government which I think is happening today. Communism appears to be a remedy for all kinds of social problems such as government economic failure, unemployment, poverty, and health care. The reality is that the populace is soon deceived by the dicipline of communism. They find out that communism can be ruthless, inhumane, and self seeking, which destroys private innitiative and all the goodness that the public thought they would receive from a communist government. That is why communism fails and has never worked. I would rather die free with my own insurance or none than live in a communist run government.

Scare tactics or not, the fact is that whenever our
gov't has involved itself in massive programs, the
result has been much less than satisfactory.
When your employer is paying, I believe he or she has
every right to control costs, even health insurance.
Mr Moyer's arguments are weak. Anyone can go to an
emergency ward, without insurance, and we pay for it with high premiums. National
health insurance may be viable, but cost and management will determine its success.
Perhaps a czar to oversee the industry may be an answer.
At least the private sector will conduct the business side
of it, knowing that their decisions may not be final.Or our gov't can absorb these bad debts like
it is absorbing those of GM. Let the hospital send
the bill for uninsured patients to Uncle Sam to be put
on the pile with all the other debts, to be paid by our
children. This is the answer.

This is absolutely imperative and people should communicate with their legislator that no matter what their stance they will be fired at the next election if they are not included in what ever plan is adopted with no loopholes.

But it it wont work anyway.

There is no serious debate in Washington about health care Democrats simply want to confiscate control of our entire health care system. All proposals the Democrats are considering lead to the same dead end – socialized medicine and then health care rationing. All of this is in the name of providing health insurance for a conveniently misleading number of 50 million uninsured.

Democrats are also ignoring the pitfalls of government-run health care experienced in other countries.

Mandate health insurance coverage. This is how the Social Security system got started in 1935. The deductions from people’s paychecks and from their employers were mandated, because everyone deserved some assistance in their golden years, and everyone had to participate in order for it to work. Congress changed the rules, increased the amount of the deductions and started using the money for other purposes. And if your future Social Security benefits are your only means of “retiring”, your lifestyle will suffer dramatically.

A government mandate is also how Medicare got started in 1965. Look how well it’s not working. Like Social Security, the problems are being ignored.

Government health insurance will be an option. LOL, It’s like competing against a team that made the rules, and they can change the rules whenever they want to in order to give themselves a better advantage. Eventually, there will only be one option, and even the sheeple can figure that out.

It’s free! Yea right, the rich people will pay for it, yea right, why is'nt social security free, this is a lie – we are screwed.

It's all about the huge bribes the healthcare, insurance industries and doctors shovel to bought and paid for corporate w hore politicians.

Like when Billy Tauzin helped get the new Medicare bill passed then went to work for big pharma for 2 million a year. But he'd insist the two events had nothing in common.

They've screwed the US royally and now it's time for us to correct the mistake.

Greed has been embraced in this country... to the point of self-destruction.

Email, call or write your representatives and ask them:

WHY THEY HAVE EXEMPTED THEMSELVES FROM NATIONALIZED HEALTHCARE.

BOMBARD them with the question. If it is what they want to force on us..they should be on it too.
