After reading these posts, I had to go and rent the movie to see what it was about. This is truly a sad case. Steve, I commend you for the time you did spend as a "big brother", that is something I have always wanted to do, but could never seem to find the time.
I live in Murphysboro, and I do see Tonya walking, I have never spoken with her, but I do intend to the next chance I get. She came across as a very caring and thoughful person.
As far as the Rowe punk goes, I know his father, and the kid is not a product of his upbringing. His parents are the most kind and generous people I have ever met. Unfortunately, like so many others....they produced a moron.
I do hope that when and if Stevie is released from prison he gets the help he truly needs, but, unfortunately this will probably not be the case.

To the A-holes who felt the stupid comments they made about a Documentary THEY NEVER EVEN WATCHED!! May YOU ALL come back in another lifetime and experience the horrible rotten life this man had growing up!! Because you F****** DESERVE TO!!! MORONS!! A lot of people seem to have the time to watch docos on the less fortunate and comment as they will, but most of the time it ends there. More people need to value working in areas like disabilities as opposed to careers that make $$$. The whole world seems upside down. Everyone has their own dramas I suppose. I only caught the last 15 mins of this doco, it was moving and will hopefully inspire more good actions from the public, not just internet fascination and hype.

It was mentioned in the doco, " funds were put aside" for stevie.. I would hope Stevie the soul who lost so so much / and his family.. is being helped by the doco makers profits.. as really it was them who allowed such heart .honesty. and openess.. mi do belive the only reseason they all contributed to it in the belife it might save "hope" in there hearts and inturn save there bro...

Wow what a doco... The true heroes were the strong young women, Tonya, Tonyas friend in Chicago and Brenda... Please make a doco about them! I also suggest that Stevie has an aspergers type psychiatric problem. It was so heart moving to see him so connected and disconnected from the world... Strangely Tonya was his link to the world. unfortunately prisons are full of them... This is the real social problem, and the divide is growing. Lots to ponder...

Why is Stevie Wonder so happy?

Because he doesn't know he's black.

The issue of mental illness is essential element to this film. He was clearly vulnerable and didn't have the support services to facilitate healthy decision making. That's not to say he still could not have. I experienced abuse in my early teen and have not turned into an abuser, nor for that matter, gone on to make a series of bad decisions. My life is, for the most part, successful. I have two great kids, a healthy academic career and a loving relationship. Rather than blame anyone, I got on with life and used it as a springboard for change. I have never been a victim and have forgiven my abuser. I am not bitter and can love and trust men. I didn't have an emotionally healthy family either however i was emotionally healthy. Go figure! This is an often misheld belife that if your family an emotionaly stunted, so will the kids. Very inacccurate. Maybe what sets me apart was what had was wisdom but most importantly, an education. I now have a doctorate and teach in the area in which I have first hand experience. So, the key here is not just about lack of support to stop the train wreck called, Stevie, but the serious issues of mental illness which sometimes cannot be stopped. Sometimes life just happens and sometimes, not matter what support, things still happen. Who knows if, even with all the support in the world, some people are just waiting to happen. After all, he was an adult.

I add to watch this documentary for class, they never said what year he was convicted. anybody know?
