I am not sure what the article is getting at. Opinions range widely on a lot of issues from economics to the environment. There isn't a 'right side' here. There are just two competing ideals.

And it is true that NG is not 'renewable'. Perhaps it should be included in a new category that could include methane from old land fills or other 'transient resources' since the primary characteristic is that the stuff is leaking out anyway..
