Man's dream of becoming deputy becomes reality for the day

Full story: San Bernardino County Sun

Raul Guzman had been dreaming of this day since he was in kindergarten. He was spiffed out in a tan deputy's uniform and shiny black shoes, carefully repeating the oath of a sworn peace officer as he stood before San Bernardino County Sheriff Rod Hoops.

Cool. Deputy for a day.
How many innocent citizens did he arrest, women were raped and bribes did he take?

you obviously have issues and it's sad you have to be so negative during a positive moment like this. KARMA IS A B*TCH!

Congratulations Mr. Guzman! Glad you got to have one day of fun compared to the many days of pain and bad days you have had. Stay strong and keep your chin up and never quit! To the guy "D_avid" who wrote above me, get a life! This kid did nothing to you, he only aspires to have a career and do something well.

I am a complete jerk, and even I don't see how this story should be subject to snotty comments from anonymous internet weirdos. You gotta know where to draw the line. He has terminal cancer!!!

I hope he had a great time and I think it is great that our Dept and SEBA out this on. I do, however, believe this is simply a political stunt before election time to get Hoops some good press. The sad part about it is while it got good press, Hoops is running the Crimes Agaiinst Children unit short and endangering the children of this county. Kind of hypocritical don't you think. We are so short on funds that we can't afford to protect children but we can afford to conduct this political stint with SWAT and bombs / arson with all the bells and whistles just before the election. Hoops definitely needs the good press though because this cover up of his command staff stealing tens of thousands of dollars is sure to cost him a lot of votes.

Sgt.- Its too bad you have to try and turn something good into a negative. SEBA has partnered with DCMF many times over the last 10 years to grant wishes like this. As far as the cost, this was scheduled for a SWAT training day, so the division was already going to be there doing the same things they let this young man particapate in. All other costs were covered by DCMF. Elections and good will are two things that should never be mixed. It sounds like nobody running for office should do anything good because it might get them some publicity. The publicity was for this young man fighting for his life! His wish was to be a deputy for a day and thats what happened. The timing of the event revolved around the wellness of the young man. This had been scheduled for December, but had to be moved to a later day because of medical complications. You have an issue with Sheriff Hoops and thats your right, but let some of the anger go and look at the specific issue before you comment with half truths. Good luck to you in the future.

I don't know about you, but I would much rather have people who want to be Deputy then those who do it for the money.

I feel for you Guzman. Hang in there. I hope your treatment is successful.

Hoops and SEBA should be ashamed to use this situation to futher their political ambitions and their union cause.

This could have been done honorably by not calling for a press reslease.

It's not Schafer, but his last name starts with an "S" too. I feel sorry for this young man. Some of you have ruined this for him...Law enforcement agencies do this all the time. The sheriff's department has a regular benefit they give proceeds to regarding a young girl who was burned with a chemical many years ago...

Yes it did. And the one that was done in late December for a young boy who unfortunately passed away because of his illness. These acts of compassion happen year in and year out whenever they are needed. The election cycle as you suggest is not the deciding factor for doing something good. If this really is GS, I am very disapponted in you.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Capricorn

You feel like overindulging yourself in some way today, and why not? Throw caution to the wind and eat your way through a big bar of chocolate, or have a retail therapy session that leaves you reeling from the amount of money you've spent. There's a definite chance you could get carried away and tell a whopper of a story that has little resemblance to what really happened. What on earth has got into you?
