The schools are just starting to do what the township athletic programs have been doing for years. Fountain Hill charged about $75 two years ago to play little league and Salisbury Township charged this year $130(50 to join, 40 to buy out fund raiser, and 40 for uniform deposit)to play.

WHOOPS....can't forget the classics:

8. Weightlifting (with Pops 72' Gremlin).
9. Swimming (with the rest of the brown trout floating in that toilet town)
Jethro.. too funny.. if you know the area everything you said is so true.. Unfortunately, the $10 they have to pay will take away from there purchases of toothbrushes and toothpaste, and other hygiene products. Oh wait, they dont use that stuff in the first place.

Out here the athletes paid up to 150.00 to play and this offsets the price of transportation to and from the games. and if a player can't afford all of it they do service in the school , like cleaning the caff, picking up trash around the school and that kind of stuff , we haven't had one athlete not play because of this.

Jethro,

I know that you are still bitter from the time that the Tamaqua locals made you bend over and squeal like a pig. But don't judge all of them because of a few bad apples. I am sure that your freinds down in the Harrisburg area don't know that you took it up the rear and liked it. There is no need to tell them either. That can be a secret between you and your special freinds in T-Town.

Time heals all wounds. Someday it will be just a bad memory for you (or maybe a fond one).

Now THAT is a good idea!
Cash or labor is the way to go.
I like the $150 price too.

Perhaps they can charge a parking fee to all the kids who drive their car to school. You know, the ones we HAVE to provide a bus seat for?

I don't agree with this decision. How about those students who can't afford the ten dollars. and No matter what taxes will always will go up. This is another stragedy to get more money for the district.. Think about the kids benefit not about the taxes..In past year everything was doing fine. Know everything is taxes, I wonder why thing are the way they are..

Why things are the way they are?
It has come to the point of survival.
The backs of the tax paying property owners have been broken. The well has run dry.

It's long past the time when all school athletics were privatized.
How many school districts cry poverty annually and look to the state and local taxpayers for subsidies, while at the same time financing bloated athletic budgets?
Athletics serve a handful of the student population, at the expense of the whole.
Begin by eliminating all sports in schools that have alternatives in the private sector such as, baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis etc.
Most of these programs were initiated generations ago when there were no private sector options.
Several years ago in the Scranton School District $6 million were wasted renovating a stadium while at the same time students were forced to use textbooks 10-15 years out of date. The district claimed there was no money for new books.
This is not the exception but rather the rule and I can site similar situations in several other districts just in my area.

Yes, the valuable lesson is that athletes are being singled out unfairly vs. other student activities because some adults have a bias against athletes.

I would have the same comments about the band, chorus, clubs etc. This article was not about them. The same logic applies to all of them.

I will suggest that athletes do get more attention than do the rest. Never is there a pep rally for the band, or banners hanging everywhere for the Chess club.

To everyone: why do we pay taxes again? It's amazing that a kid has to pay to play sports in high school when politicians don't have to pay for anything.(Check out the article on Pa. politicians and their perks!)

WOW....sports seems to be singled out here. What about other extra-curricular activities such as marching band for one example. They use school moneys for things such as uniforms and travel expenses. It has been proved that students in activites maintain higher GPA's and less behavioral problems in school so we should encourage it. How about looking at other ways of cutting costs?
Although teachers are very valuable, I hear many complain about extras they are sometimes either required to do or asked to do. One such is having to stay late for parent teacher conferences. Some teachers are over paid and some deserve high pay but their pay is based on length of service and years of experience. Maybe it should also be based on performance as well, like most other jobs. Maybe then their would be money going to the teachers that deserve it and maybe money left over for the kids.
At least the Board didn't raise taxes. North Schuylkill School District just voted to close Ringtown Elementary. The Tamaqua Board should close the Rush Elementary School. This would save on salaries and maintenance. The district currently buses kids from the Middle Ward of Tamaqua to Rush. Although the cost of transportation would increase, it would be minimal to the amount of savings by sending all of Tamaqua and Rush to the Tamaqua Elementary.

Good one. I think Jethro is actually from T-town. He seems very familiar with everything about the place. In fact his name indicates he probably lettered in all those activities he mentioned. Jethro, weren't you in the TAHS Class of '78 (and '79 and '80)? Of course, then he had anywhere in the world to move and he settled on Harrisburg. Now there's a mecca of culture and sophistication. I think Jethro STILL has something up his a$$.

Tamaqua, PA. The armpit of the north. They would pay more than 10 bucks for their type of sports.
1. Sheep Wrestling (waders optional)
2. Cow Tipping
3. Tonsil Hockey (with their sister)
4. Basket weaving (required for GED)
5. Mine pit jumping (has become popular).
6. Crack and Field(sorry..Track/Field)with the get-high jump, javelin (pratice by throwing at each other), Buck-Shot Put, 100 meter dash to the sheep,
and whatever other redneck inbred game they can think of than involves sheep or their sister.
If the kids were smart......they would move out when the get enough sense....then again that could take awhile.
