The decision stinks and no one likes change but guess what? No one seemed concerned about any county budget cuts when they voted to reduce their property taxes which by the way the school system warned would impact them. It's called consequences!

I am a student at west orange high and i really do not like the change! I play sports for the school and outside of school. and i will not have the time for this i also am getting a job, because i need the money. i personaly think the drop out rate will go up too. Because some student have to work to support their parents. and if school starts and ends later they will not be getting the money they need. And how about the middle schoolers they cant be home alone alot of the parent depend on the older kids to be home to watch the younger kids. i go home n watch my sister, she is in middle school and she is not happy with the change eather,my parents are not happy with the change.

Yes, there are high school students that do have good grammer. It is the adults that surprise me. They are cursing all over the place and aren't parents supposed to be setting examples? When you use those words it shows that you lack a better vocabulary. We all (the students) would have better grammer if the time changed. That way the one-sixth of us who have English first period will be paying more attention due to the fact that we are awake and attentative.
I think every should concentrate on the point people are trying to make and less about their spelling and grammar. We have all become a little lazy when blogging.

I did go and get my old high school yearbooks out. You know how the yearbook staff comes and takes pictures of students "working" in class? There were 7 rows of 6 chairs each in the the three reguglar clasrooms I saw(English, Flamme's History, and Hinchee's Spanish class). Mrs. Ferguson's Physics class had 3 row of six desks that sat two students each for 36 total. Every space was taken up. The only classroom that had few desks in it was the ESE classroom. There was only about ten students in there.

I looked at some of my class pictures from Elementary school. My Kindergarten(private- it wasn't mandatory back then) had 35 kids with two teachers. My first grade class had 27 and one teacher. Second grade there are only 18 in the picture(it doesn't mention children not shown so maybe my class was an overflow class or maybe a lot of kids were out sick). The third grade picture the number is back up to 24.
My mom has the rest of the photo albums.

This all took place in the seventies and early eighties. Maybe all the students were high and they were easier to control.

KUDOS to Rick Roach for his efforts to try and right a wrong. Since 44% of the transportation budget is spent on 7% of the bus riders (which is NOT 7% of the school population, but significantly less), then the transportation cuts need to be found in that 44% of their budget. 93% of the bus riders only take up 56% of the transporation budget and yet 100% of the students in middle and high school are having to make the sacrafice for probably less than 1% of the entire student population.
I should also add that since it is the high schoolers that make up the majority of the employees in the elementary and middle after school programs which are run by the Boys & Girls Club and the YMCA (not to mention those programs run by the City of Orlando Recreation Department), that these organizations will now be significantly understaffed and therefore will have to limit the number of kids that they can care for because of student/caregiver ratios. This means that this not only affects middle and high school, but now elementary as well.

No paddling after the mid seventies. Had to be something else. Our dean used to kick out all the troublemakers. He would rather not have the FTCE money of the troublemaker in order keep order for all the non-troublemaker students. I don't know where the students went if they couldn't make it in public school- maybe vo-tech or private as there were no alternative schools.

These kids get a lucky break and all they do is whine and complain. These kids should be shown the homeless living on the streets downtown. Because that's where most of them will wind up.

My mom was allowed to paddle without worry about being accused of child abuse!

Oh, I'm sorry. Next time around I'll vote to get beat over the head with even higher property taxes based on even higher assessments for imaginary, unsustainable property values. Will that make you happy?

Many people goto work in the morning and cannot wait at the buss stop. I high schooler alone at the bus stop is not a big deal like the yougner kids in the dark.
I also go to work in the morning! I am also a parent. Being a parent is my most important job. I have to be at work at 8:30am. I have time to wait with my child or even drive her to school. Change is a part of life. Mature adults learn to deal with the change. At least we have three months to figure out a plan. That is a lot more productive than complaining on an internet message board.

Were you at the meeting? What happened is so very far from being "exactly what they did here." The school board did not address spending 44% of the transportation budget on 7% on the students. The change in school means 37 fewer busses. The disproportionate spending will continue under the new school schedule.
You're rude and don't seem to be very well informed.
No. I wasn't at the meeting. I was AT HOME SPENDING TIME WITH MY KIDS! You know, PARENTING??? I can adjust to the changes that life throws at me. I don't see why all of these whiny parents can't make arrangements. THEY HAVE THREE MONTHS! I am a working mom with three kids, and I am glad that OCPS is saving some money from their budget. Sometimes you have to look outside the box to save money, and just because all the other school districts do something doesn't mean that we have to. At least all parents have three months to figure out a plan. I am using this as the prime time to teach my children how to deal with change in a positive way.

if you haven't already done so, please visit www.ipetitions.com/petition/voiceagainstthech... sign the petition against the time change.

Most students already know about it, but signatures of parents help too.

the myspace page of the girl organizing this petition is www.myspace.com/voiceagainstthechoice

thanks.

Oh my. I didn't realize that parenting my children had anything to do with the death penalty or being a liberal. Are you suggesting that liberals are better parents? Stick to the topic at hand please.

I didn't see a question in your previous comment. Stop with the name calling, it reflects poorly on your integrity. I certainly don't need a pat on the back from a total stranger for being a good parent. Get over your insecurity.

You condescending piece of self-loathing white liberal trash.

Here's you homework assignment if you choose to accept it....read about the Channon Christian and Christopher Newsome murders and tell me why the killers should not get the death penalty.
