Typical Employer that treats their employees like sh#t, but still expects them to go the whole 9 yards. You would think that with all the money they bring in, and all this casino and lottery money, selling it all on education, that this money would be spent there. Meaning bringing in quality employees, and doing it not at the expenese of the tax payers. Last time the school board got sued they again turned around and made these teacher sign some bs paper saying that wont work over certain hours and then what, worked those employees over those hours. But yet they feel because they forced someone to sign a paper, they are all legal. I guess the person that came up with this solution must have been a product of our public school system.( just not one of their "A" schools)

There are six sttes in this coutnry where teachers are forbidden to collect SS evenb if they paid into it. This is similar to Mass, Texas and California. Teachers and public employees get screwed. I know someone who paid into SS for 42 years moved to California and is teaching and now finds that their SS is down the toilet.

This is a bill sitting before the useless congress called the Windfall Pension bill to over turn this practice, Once again teachers and public employees get screwed!

here is my opinion. in corporate america, part-time employees are NOT entitled to benefits. This would include pensions, 401k, health benefits, etc.. I am all for teachers, but come on. If you want these things, work full time. And no, not all teachers are part time. There are quite a few that actually work past the classroom hours. I know I am going to catch some heat on this, but, I think that we payout too much in benefits for the teachers/school employees based on the hours that they actually put in!!! Just my opinion and probably many others.

This is what I am talking about. Then you complain that you are underpaid. Get a FULL TIME JOB! Work Summers! Work Winter Breaks! For the love of God you get every single flippin holiday off. AND PAID!!!! I say - reduce pay to hours worked.

Basing the following on the 2008/09 Broward County Calendar. and a $40,000 salary

Okay - now based on a "real" full time job of 2080 hours to be paid a Salary per calendar year, the hourly pay would be $19.23 per hour

Actual Days School is in session = 189 including 6 early release days

24 days - school is closed (real holiday or bogus holiday)

Based on worked hours and paid days off from school, a total of 1704 hours are worked. This would equate to $32,767.92

Break up hours to a full time schedule of 52 weeks per year and you worked 32.04 hours per week. THAT'S IT!!!

Therefore my opinion is your have stolen money from Taxpayers. You dont work anywhere near fulltime (UNLESS YOU DO OTHER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES)

STOP COMPLAINING!!! WORK MORE! MAYBE YOU WOULD SET A BETTER EXAMPLE TO THE STUDENTS. ALL THEY SEE IN FRONT OF THEM IS LAZY! ONLY WORKS 189 DAYS OUR OF A 365 DAY YEAR! COME ON!!!

This is why the schools have teachers that don't go that extra fifty miles anymore. They treat teachers badly, just like the students treat them and worst.

I hope they get that plus penalties and interest!

Lazy people don't work right? Well these teachers have worked and are working. The part timers are working full time hours and they should be compensated to the fullest. Imagine if the teachers had to deal with idiotic, ignorant students like yourself?

Why don't you get off your lazy butt and go to work as a teacher, deal with the things they have to deal with in today's society, then come back and blog about that! I am sure it would be interesting.

Yeah right! I am not a teacher, but I am a college student at this time. Try sitting in a classroom full of highschoolers or middle for that matter and you will see how underpaid they are!

And when exactly do you think they do planning, and grading and teacher/parent conferences. A sanitation worker with no education makes an average of $24.00 an hour.
Your math is also amazing, how about the 104 days that are weekends and 3-4 weeks of vacation per year that every other employee gets as well as paid holidays. So now lets add say 7 holidays, 20 vacation days and 104 weekend days....that is 320 days vs 365 so salary wise they are way underpaid. None of this is taking into account the extra time they put in at home preparing and if you don't think they do you are just ignorant.

First, I am not a student. I work in Corporate America and have far surpassed a teacher in education. I guarantee, I have worked more hours that any teacher. And lord knows, I am very proud of my job and my salary. And I work hard for it. Before you make any uneducated insulting comments, think about it. Yes, "SOME" teachers are underpaid. But, most of them, are paid too much for what they actually do. I believe in compensation for work performed. I do my job, I put in the hours, therefore I make the six-figure salary.

That included their teacher planning days. And their paid holidays. Go to the Broward County School Board Calendar and add before you make another comment. And, no, I dont believe that "ALL" teachers do planning at home. As a matter of fact, I know many that dont. I know many teachers of whom I am friends with. And I am honest with them...They are over-paid for the hours they put in. Then they complain when they are asked to work an additional hour. Then they complain when they dont have a job for the summer. Get one. Then whats worse, they want to borrow money. I have worked hard mine, and have had the will and the drive. They need to do the same thing.

I was not talking about planning days, most of them are filled with meetings or training they have to attend. Holiday's I was including just what every other person gets, not the extra ones. Post office employee's get 8 per year, I wasn't saying they get 7 was using that as a gauge against other professions. My sister has to be at school forty five minutes before school starts and is required to stay the same at the end. The teachers you know and have talked to are probably not the cream of the crop.
