Are jockstraps considered a gay thing now?
I’ve noticed that many stores do not sell them as much or keep them in stock. Some sporting goods stores do not sell them at all and only compression shorts. Compression shorts seem to be the thing now. I feel like a lot of straight guys are more modest than they used to be and that they are afraid of another guy seeing their buttocks. Guys used to swim nude at the YMCA and now they don’t anymore. They don’t go skinnydipping anymore either. They are too chicken to be around another guy naked or undress in front of him. I guess guys are wimps today. Apparently males today are unsure or insecure about their sexuality. They used to give each other firm handshakes and real hugs but now they give weak handshakes and “half-hugs” where their chests do not meet. I did a search on “jockstraps and gays” and an answer on Wiki Answers kind of confirmed my theory about why jocks are less popular now. I think it’s because straight guys associate jockstraps with gays now and they are also afraid of another guy seeing their butt because the existence of gays is more known now and they don’t want to take the chance that one or more of the guys in the locker room could be gay and looking at them despite whether the straight guy is really all that good looking (it’s funny how many straight guys assume a gay would hit on them even if they are butt ugly and then they are offended if you tell you are not attracted to them after they think you are after them). I’m gay and I could care less if a straight woman saw me nude so what’s up with the straight guys? I heard store owners also have an anti-gay hang-up about straps and that they are fazing them out. I’ve also heard that when people ask about where the athletic supporters are in a store that an employee or manager will give them a weird look or look disgusted or like the question made them uncomfortable. Could it be possible that jockstraps (a.k.a. athletic supporters) are associated with male homosexuality? I’ve quoted a guy on Wiki Answers saying: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_do_guys_wear_co... Q: Why do guys wear compression shorts now instead of jockstraps? A:“I also think it doesn't help that so many gay guys think jockstraps are sexy, and so they are used a lot in gay porn. Younger straight guys who use the web a lot pick up on that. Then they think that if the gays like them, then jockstraps must be gay. So then they don't want to wear a jock because they don't want people to think they are gay, or have gay guys looking at them.” |

I think Jockstraps are gay. I'm 46 years old and gay so I've kind of kept tabs on the history over the years. I loved my first jockstrap, my dad bought it for me when I was about 11 years old. I was always aroused by them, having said that:
When I was growing up I think a lot of guys hated wearing jock straps. Back then it had nothing to do with being gay or straight. Lots of guys hated them. Some said they were uncomfortable, others said boys size 16 briefs (Hanes) gave enough support. Lots of P.E. teachers and gym coaches insisted they be worn. I even have heard of guys a few years older than me having to submit to jock checks. Where they had to show the coach they were wearing one. I heard one story from my high school English teacher who was also the Basketball coach. He had to submit to random jock checks. He said they'd get swats with a paddle if they didn't wear a jock. When I went to college in the early 80's and always took a Phys Ed class. I noticed that jockstraps became less common. I also worked out in health clubs where this was also true. Today I've noticed jocks are really uncommon except with older men 45+, and they are few and far between. In the last year or so I've only seen one guy wearing one at the gym. Conversely I notice that gay men have parties where they wear jockstraps. Its not about athletic support. I guess in the gay community jocks are considered a form of masculine lingerie. |

Our coach and p.e. teacher in jr. high made us all wear jockstraps for class and any sports activity. It was mandatory. I remember Mr. Dooley doing jock tests two or three times a year. We all had to lay down on the gym floor face down and grab our waistband of our jockstrap and pull it out so he could see it. And as he walked past us he would point at it and say snap. We would let it snap back so he could hear it. He was checking to make sure the elasticity was still good. Over time and many washings it starts to get loose. We all had to submit to that for the next six years. No one questioned it. It was just something the guys had to do. I think it was a good idea. All through college I wore one on the wrestling team and for work outs. Just became second nature. I still wear a jockstrap almost every day at the gym. Dont care what the other guys at the university gym think. I feel better suppported when I wear them in a gym environment. Have probably more jockstraps in my locker now than I have underwear at home.

I don't remember when jockstraps became required for gym classes when I was in school but I suspect it was high school. I graduated in 1964. We had gym in junior high school (7-8-9 grades) with showers and the works but I don't remember anything about jockstraps. I do recall the shorts were very short by today's standards. On the other hand, I no longer see a reason for jockstraps, since it seems to me like ordinary briefs (jockey shorts!) perform pretty much the same function just as well but what do I know.
As for them being gay? I didn't know anyone in high school that I would now think of as gay but again, what do I know. I seriously doubt that in junior high school you would see a different but what do, well, you know the rest. But where I came from, boys didn't hug one another and I don't think girls ever did either. That was something reserved for aunts. |

Jockstraps are an excellent choice for male support for most sports (track and field, cross country, basketball, football, baseball, soccer etc.). For some sports the kind of jock with a protective cup may be needed (baseball catcher, lacrosse, ice hockey are examples). Jockstraps help prevent injury and guys will play harder when they have proper support. This is true for all male athletes.

What about female athletes ? Won't it hurt if they get nailed by a line drive right in the snatch ? |

jockstraps arent gay. maybe gays like them, but they are not gay. i dont even think y-back thongs are gay for men. Lingerie thongs? Now thats gay. A jockstrap is no more gay then a bra is for women.

I wear a jockstrap. So do most of the guys I play hoops with. Been wearing one since age 10 -- can't imagine playing sports without one. I've never had trouble buying one -- nobody's ever looked at me funny. And as far as guys seeing my naked butt in the locker room -- well, they do, and they see everything else, too, when I take a shower. For a straight guy, seeing another male in a jockstrap is at best amusing and at worst, revolting. Not sure where I fall in that range, but in any case, I've seen so many guys over the years in jocks that the sight hardly registers anymore. Jocks make playing basketball and other sports more comfortable -and for hockey and lacrosse (with a cup) they are essential protection. Bottom line: jocks may not be for everybody -- and yes, gay guys may find them sexy (hard to believe, especially given how bad they STINK!)-- but wearing one hardly makes you gay.

While it is true that the jockstrap has become an icon of homoeroticism, I do not believe it labels a man as "gay" for wearing one. For example, I have seen players for the Texas Longhorns wearing them. Fighters on UFC often wear them. I wear one when I go to the university gym. Only one guy has asked why I wear one. My response:
"It's the only underwear that lets me move as if it's not there, but keeps stuff put and cools great too." I would also like to establish that a jockstrap is MEN'S underwear. It would be far more gay to see a guy wearing panties or a thong. So on that note, it's appropriate attire for anyone with the above requirements. Just ask Calvin Klein. |

Yes, gay guys love jock straps but that doesn't make them gay. Gay guys also like briefs but that doesn't seem to stop straight guys from wearing those. Its not the jock that is gay, its liking what a jock holds that is gay. Having said that, a a big reason that jocks are falling out of favor is that they really do not provide as much support as they are purported to provide. Christ, my briefs give me as much or more support than a jock. Compression shorts provide better support as well as not exposing the ass of neurotic straight boys who think all fags want them all the time or that by exposing their ass they feel that they are telling everyone they want to be buttfucked. Straight guys get over yourselves.

Actually, the reason I wear a jock is for the superior support. Especially in basketball, where you're crouching, cutting and jumping. Personally, I just don't get from briefs what I get from a jock. I don't like compression shorts because I have muscular thighs and I hate the feeling of tight fabric pinching my skin and leg hairs. I think those of us who grew up wearing jocks carry a drastically different connotation about them than those who didn't grow up wearing them. It was ingrained in me from an early age -- when you play sports, you wear a jock. I always did and always do. I don't even think about it. I just pull the thing on.(And P.S. Nobody ever did "jock checks" at ANY school I ever went to. Does that really happen???!!!) Bottom line, it's baffling to me (and amusing) that jocks are now considered by some to be "gay." But what the hell... free country.
