Schools may take $852M hit

Waddya know, another sob story from the drive-by media. Let's see this cluster of synpathetic libs look at how the money is spent at the school district level. No, that would ruin the narrative: all public workers are saints and deserve their salaries and golden benefits.
Columbus Public Schools, for example, has a number of unused buildings the district could sell. It is losing student population. Funny, that doesn't seem to come up in stories like these.
Good luck with that Pulitzer, guys. You've definitely figured out one thing: Journalism's big prize is always handed out to critics of Republicans, not for defending the taxpayer.

So if I read the article correctly,$450 million of the $852 million "lost" is from Ohio not replacing ONE TIME federal stimulus funds that the schools knew was one time only, but they chose to use for their permanent operating budget? These school officials need to re-take their own math classes!

Why would anyone of any skill,integrity, and drive want to go into education with the disaster this Governor is making of Ohio's education system? He is stripping off all their job protections and all it would take to run a good teacher out on a rail is a couple of two bit school board members hacked off because a teacher gave their kids the bad grade they deserved. I have seen them try to do that in the past.

Good people I know are already fleeing Ohio government and Ohio's education in droves as this governor drives his bus and our state off a cliff to crash and burn. Wake up people. This guy has to be reigned in.

Based on what's he's doing now, Kasich might as well close all the public schools in Ohio, require citizens to pay a "fee" to secure police and fire protection -- heck, he just may sell the state to the highest bidder (if he could find any bidders.)

Great news!!! Keep the pressure on to starve the Unions until the costs to taxpayers are brought down to reality. We are being gouged with high real estate taxes to pay for a failed educational system controlled by union workers. Starve them into submission!!!

If I recall correctly, the stimulus funds were to be "kept up" by the States that accepted them. Isn't that why some of the State Governors refused to take the funds when they were offered? I seem to recall Governors refusing to take the funds because they did not think they would have the funds to keep up the programs. Anyone know if this is true?

How is this going to "starve" the unions? Public workers were unionized long before the 1980's when collective bargaining rights were given to them weren't they? They might not be as "fat" but they certainly won't "starve". Actually, I could see this as a way of promoting them. Unions are needed most when the employees right get trampled. And, no, I am NOT a union member.

Here come the School Bond issues!!! We will have to make up these "cuts".

Strong man, General Noriega of Panama closed all public schools before he was captured by the United States and put in prison. Those that really wanted an education didn't miss a beat.
It is said that one can take a horse to water but one can not make him drink. The same can be said for students. I suppose many students are wasting our time and money, but those that really want an a good education will not miss a beat.
The real lesson here for all Ohio residents is don't spend what you don't have.

Is the state trying to eradicate gypsy mothers? Or gypsy moths?

Failed education system? What about placing some of the blame where it belongs - at the HOMES. Why do suburbs do better on test scores? Why do schools with more involved parents do better? When the community works together to educate the students, the students do better. Sending a child to school for 6-8 hrs a day isn't enough to compete in a global economy. Having supportive parents (Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, etc) that are willing to work with the child and encourage the child to stay in school and embrace the merits and benefits of an education goes a long way. Are all students the next Einstein? No - but they can and should all have the benefit of professional teachers who can help guide them to be the best they can be.

Teachers as a whole now are required to earn a Master's degree. There is little or no additional funding or fee waivers for the teachers to do this. So, out of pocket, they are required to go back to school and get better at their profession. What other line of work has that as a requirement?

Math & Science teachers teach rather than work in industry because they like students - NOT because they "can't hack it" in industry. When do those teachers get "merit pay" for being something that most people shy away from?

What happens when these charter schools fail and they cost the taxpayers more? Or will the best students just go to a better school? Ohio have high performing charter schools and low performing charter schools...how will the education system be different? Will the next step be to fire the parents if your child is low performing and reorganize your home? Parents advocate for your children now before "The State" makes all your decisions for you.
