I cannot be impartial about a drug that my son's doctor urged on him, telling him he needed it and that it was a safe, good drug. My son had been taking lithium for years and done fine but the doctor felt he needed something "stronger". He had always trusted his doctor, however, this was a MEDICAID doctor. First one of those. Lilly went around the country BRIBING state Medicaid programs to use this drug. And my son died from it. This is murder.

So that is how my son came to be killed. Do you expect me to be impartial about this lethal drug that we know now Lilly KNEW (It is in writing) could cause diabetes, hyperglycemia, and death but chose not to TELL? Another thing in writing is their campaign to give the drug off label (against the LAW) to people with dementia. Thousands died here, too, of heart attacks and strokes.

I know other drug companies are equally as sneaky, hiding the truth of poor clinical trials, of fatal side effects, and so on. The only consolation I can see for Lilly is that they are not the only dirty, killing drug company.

Many have benefited from Zyprexa it is still used at my local clinic as a PRN for severe acute cases of psychotic episodes according to staff.

Some patients have outright DROPPED DEAD from taking it.

I am not ganging up on the Lilly company to bash them they sold a product with a degree of defect and they need to face some music for it.

Fair is fair

The Zyprexa complications is not a moral issue.

Not sure where you got the information as to $2.50 a tablet. Try $10-$25 per tablet. Zyprexa 20mg 1 per day: 1 month supply =$639.97 according to drugstore.com .
Lilly charges way too much for a product that carries the side effect baggage that Zyprexa has. Sickening!

Everyone wants a magic pill and gobbles these things up like Pac-Man without pausing to ask your doctor about complications. A black box warning will not stop people from taking anything that they think can help. Drugs are $2.50 a pill because it takes 10 to 15 years from discovery to market and once they get there prepare to be sued on every other product. Then you have a really good one and the patent runs out too early so the generic companies make it without doing any work.
There, you got 2 rants for the price of 1.
Many patients do ask their doctors about the risks. If the doctors are aware of the risks most WILL tell the patient. Patients share little of the accountability for this horrible result. Doctors share little accountability too. Lilly was too quick to put this out if they were not aware of the risks. Also, if even 5% of patients develop diabetes from taking Zyprexa that's too high of a percentage to release such a drug. Even assuming Zyprexa was only marketed for schizophrenia and bipolar doesn't leave Lilly unaccountable. They are accountable for any severe side effects that occur, especially if there are not exstinuating circumstances or prior conditions that may exacerbate the side effects. I do not blame the patients or the states for seeking retributions. I blame the greedy legal counsel for settling too quickly and Lilly for just throwing money at a problem versus offering a solution. There is not a cure for diabetes, but I feel that all patients that develop the condition as a side effect of Zyprexa should be entitled to life long treatment for their diabetes. That's the only logical solution. Lilly needs to admit guilt and offer assistance. It's not charity, it's retribution. I'm sure if you were suffering the conditions these folks are, than you would wish the same. Money won't solve their problems, neither will the lawyers. Treatment for their diabetes and medical assistance is the only solution they can hope for.

Eli Lilly makes billions on diabetes treatment and also gets $4.2 billion a year in sales of their biggest cash cow Zyprexa which has been scandalized as *causing* diabetes as a major side effect.
Zyprexa off label promotion scandal is all over the news now.
Lilly drug reps are alleged to have called their marketing ploy,"Viva zyprexa".
There are now 7 states (and counting) going after Lilly for fraud and restitution.

Here we go..the classic 'shoot the messenger' from the company apologist.

Know this, most of Lilly's people in charge learned their law school tactics pre-internet.The WWW is going to croak them.

All they have to do is pay me my well deserved settlement for damages incurred by my 4 years of zyprexa usage, and I will go away.

Until then I am in their face in cyberspace.

Me and you both. I think some don't realize that the drug had NO WARNING label we we were given it. Although I repeadtely told the DR. all the side effects I was having I was told that ZYPREXA could not be causing that. Well the proof is in Eli-lilys face now. Not only did I get to be diabetic, so did at least 40 thousand other people.

(In 2004, the American Diabetes Association found that Zyprexa was more likely to cause diabetes than many other antipsychotic drugs.)

How does Zyprexa cause diabetes?

On July 1, 2002, Duke University issued a Press Release about the most recent finding that links the new anti-psychotics to early onset diabetes. The team of researchers--Elizabeth A. Koller, M.D. from the FDA, and Murali Doraiswamy, M.D. from Duke-- analyzed FDA's adverse drug report database, MedWatch (which receives 10% of adverse drug reports). They identified 289 cases of diabetes in patients who had been prescribed olanzapine (a.k.a. Zyprexa), Eli Lilly's most profitable drug.

The researchers reported:"Of the 289 cases of diabetes linked to the use of olanzapine, 225 were newly diagnosed cases. One hundred patients developed ketosis (a serious complication of diabetes), and 22 people developed pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, which is a life-threatening condition. There were 23 deaths, including that of a 15-year-old adolescent who died of necrotizing pancreatitis, a condition where the pancreas breaks down and dies. Most cases (71 percent) occurred within six months of starting the drug and many cases were associated with moderate weight gain."
End of Duke PR

So,it's "possible" that Zyprexa and the other atypicals may actually damage the pancreatic cells directly?

Scary thought!

Eli Lilly & co continually saying that their product does not cause diabetes is getting a little thin. I suspect that before its all over, all the states will be suing to recover the cost of meds and treatment for all the damages caused by zyprexa. I can't wait to hear more about those senate investigations. More news please

No drug has no side effects. If the drug costs too much don't take it. Depressed people have a higher incidence of diabeties than the general population. Do you want to deal with the possibility of a slightly higher risk of dibeties or you do want to deal with depression, bipolar disorder etc?

How many patients were included in the study that showed 289 new cases??? What percentage was that? What is the percentage of the population that would develop dibeties over the same period of time?
What about control

Eli Lilly is in trouble over zyprexa from shareholders.

Shareholder Class Action Filed Against Eli Lilly & Co by the Law ...

The Complaint alleges that for over a decade, Eli Lilly knew of links between Zyprexa and extreme weight gain and diabetes . In addition, during the Class ...

WILMINGTON, Del., April 2 /PRNewswire/-- A securities class action lawsuit was commenced in the Eastern District of New York on behalf of all persons who acquired securities of Eli Lilly and Company

The Complaint charges the Defendants with violations of Sections 10(b) and 20(a) of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and Rule 10b-5 promulgated thereunder, for misrepresenting to investors known adverse side-effects associated with the use of Zyprexa, the Company's best-selling drug and by failing to disclose a systematic and illegal campaign by the Company to increase Zyprexa sales by marketing Zyprexa for unapproved, off-label uses.

The Complaint alleges that for over a decade, Eli Lilly knew of links between Zyprexa and extreme weight gain and diabetes. In addition, during the Class Period, the Company engaged in a scheme to market Zyprexa for uses that were not approved by the FDA, in violation of FDA regulations that proscribed such marketing. Federal and state regulators have commenced law suits against Lilly based on these marketing schemes and the Company has denied any wrongdoing....

That's right the INVESTORS are suing Lilly over zyprexa fraud

MILLIONS HAVE QUIT BECAUSE OF THE BLACK BOX WARNINGS

SAME-If Lilly had warned about zyprexa dangers many would have switched to another medication.
