My daughter took seroquel during her first trimester of pregnancy. She did not realize she was pregnant until she was almost 4 months along, and at that time discontinued the drug. Has anyone taken seroquel while pregnant? My granddaughter was born 6 weeks premature. She has developed several health problems and is now 8 years old. She has an underactive thyroid and has vitiligo as a consequence of the thyroid condition. She was growing very slowly and is now taking HGH shots to correct this. She has a speach impedimen. She has never had a solid bowel movement. As she gets older, I am wondering what else is going to show up. I asked the Dr. about the possibility of seroquel being a factor in my granddaughter's health problems, and he said he did not think so. Does anyone know if this could be a possibility?

I have been looking up information about this because my psychiatrist recommended seroquel because I could use it likely while pregnant. I'm not sure why he said that because it is in a class C of risks. This means that either there is not enough research to know the effects on a baby, or that the effects on animals are not desirable.. Low birth-weight, slowed development were mentioned as what happened in animals... So likely it could be. I am so sorry because that must be extremely difficult to deal with. It is a tough decision for many to make to stay on or not because people who get suicidal without it like me don't seem to have the best options. Usually doctors recommend it if the benefits outweigh the risks... But it's not a great situation either way. I am a little out of my league with medical research, however. I would contact a few psychiatrists and ask them what they think about it. I'm guessing most regular doctors don't have time to keep up with research that is grey in its analysis.

I took seroquil durring my first pregnancy, my son is fine. I participate in a birth to three program where he sees a developmental specialist He has no problems and isnt behind at all. He was in the 115 percentile for growth untill he was 21months now hes in the 110th,..
Im pregnant again and i take it only on the days i really need to sleep, because i am early in my pregnancy. My psychiatrist looked up the risks with me on the internet, and out of all the meds for depression and anxiety, seroquil had the least risk. As with all drugs durring pregnancy there is all ways a risk, You have to make the choice weather or not you need it that bad. If you are very depressed, anxious, and sleepless IT works great. |

I'm four weeks pregnant right now and also battling whether or not I should continue taking seroquel. There seems to be little research done on this drug for pregnancy, other than on animals. In those instances, low birth weight, higher chance of miscarriage, and other things were a result of the drug...in rats and rabbits. Obviously animals have different reactions to drugs than humans do. However, reactions vary from person to person as well. You can never really know how a drug is going to affect you, or your child, until it already has. After several sleepless nights I decided to take 50 mg to get some sleep. I've been taking 200mg every night for over two years, and the 50mg put me out just the same. I'm only hoping that my body will eventually figure out how to sleep on its own again. Until then, I guess it's a low dose, every few nights. I'll be sure to update this if there's anything that happens.

Hi, I too Seroquel 400 mg until I fell pregnant with my Daughter. I was using Fertility Friend fertility charting web site so I knew I was pregnant at 2 weeks gestation. I then (with Medical supervision) reduced my dosage to nothing by week 5. I was one of the lucky ones......I had a symptom holiday during pregnancy. I am Bi Polar. After my Daughter was born (perfectly healthy) I decided against taking any meds as I wanted to breast feed. When my daughter was 10 weeks old I had an episode and returned to an ssri but resisted any thing else. I find it difficult to wake during the night on Seroquel and wanted to be there for my little girl. She is 20 months now and I have just had a second episode and have returned to Seroquel. It just works for me. I am planning a second baby and will do the same thing.......chart so I know early and ween off meds. I will start meds again post natal. I also took small amounts of seroquel and breast fed. Baby didn't seem to be affected. Seroquel has a 7 hour half life so you could time your breast feeding if you don't want to risk passing on the drug. My Pdoc says very little Seroquel passes the placenta?
Good Luck ladies. |

I took 200mg of seroquel throughout my entire pregnacy and my 4-year daughter has speech problems. I didn't take the medication with my boys, and they are fine. My daughter seems to be delayed with development, she is just now potty trained and in speech therapy. I think it was because of the seroquel.

I lost the baby I was carrying at about a month along. However, it's uncertain whether or not the seroquel was the reason. I had reduced what I was taking from 200 mg to 50 mg. It could be my age, or it could be my body. I lost another baby a year and a half ago. But that time I had completely quit taking it by week four, and I carried until three months. So I have no idea really why I've lost them. I just have. I personally don't blame the seroquel. I think it's life. One out of every three pregnancies ends in miscarriage.

I'm sorry to hear about your losses Katie. Your fertilised eggs DNA is tested every day to check and recheck that the code works..........sometimes the code is a little mixed up and nature takes over. I had lost a baby about 9 years ago. I didn't know I was pregnant until it was all over. Nothing anyone can say will make it ok. Just believe in your self and your body. I am trying for number 2.......good luck to both of us.

I am on a very high does of Seroquel - 150mg in the morning and 300mg-450mg in the evening. I am six weeks pregnant. I decided to take out my midday dose and have lowered the evening dose to 300mg. By next week, I'm dropping to 150mg at night and then by week 8 of my pregnancy I will be Seroquel free. I did the exact same thing during my first pregnancy and everything is fine. My daughter is 24 months with the mental development of a 3 year old. She is on the skinny side, but so are her parents. Abruptly stopping Seroquel will leave me sleepless and anxiety ridden and prone to aural hallucinations. I find that tapering down gradually is the only way that works for me. If I have trouble sleeping after that, I take a Nyquil every once in awhile. Doesn't hurt the baby and I get a nice sleep.

i have anxiety attacks, i have discussed with my doc that during pregnancy when it happens, it is amplified, i spend an entire day in horrible mania, anxiety and worry. this is not me. she did not offer any meds to help, to just take when i am having a "bad day", it is very scary and frustrating for my family. i havnt been on meds for my bi polar for over 10 years and i am tired of suffering. i finally took a seroquel last night to calm down that i got from a friend. i was under the impression it is ok. i am 12 weeks pregnant and woke up blacking out and very sick. i only got about 5 hours of sleep. i took a 100mg. im scared that this is something horrible i did. if it wasnt for the responses on here of other women who use the drug while pregnant i would be losing my mind. but my husband begged me to try it. i spent the entire day in the holds of a terrible attack. and it is no fun and so stressful for us. any advice?

i just found out that i'm pregnent and "am" on 100mg. of serquel, i'am bi-polar and do not want to loose my baby however, i suffer from ansomia and find it very difficult for me to sleep at night without this med. i've tried it, i guess i just have to weigh the two and have sleepless nights which might cause an episode for lack of sleep, confused and don't really know what to do!!!!

Try stelazine (Trifluoparazine).

Bottom line: if we do not know what Seroquel does...but your symptom return is highly probable...which is worse for the baby, your medication risk or the exacerbation of your psychiatric disorder and all of its biological consequences (sleeplessness, anxiety, mania, depression, suicidal risks) that go with it?

I am six months pregnant, and was on 30mg 3x daily and 300mg of seroquel to sleep. I quit cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant at 10 weeks, but my symptoms have gotten so much worse, sometimes I fear I won't make it long enough to give birth to my baby boy. I could never forgive myself if I caused my baby problems, but I'm afraid I'm not being the mother my one year old needs. I want to go back to taking my 30mg, does anyone have experience with seroquel late in pregnancy?

I'm nine weeks pregnant right now, stuck in a tough situation, because I am on seroquel (300 mg) and my body is physically dependant on it to sleep. And I am also on Soboxone (and opiate blocker) and Topomax. My doctor has told me that the Topomax can give the baby a cleft lip, but it is 1 in a 1000 chances. The pregnancy was not confirmerd until this past weekend, and I was also on klonopins for stress while finishining up this last quarter at college. I am going to be taken off all medication, except seroquel, but put on the lowest dose, on Thursday. The father and my parents think that the baby is going to come out mentally handicap because of all the medications and have a cleft lip because of the topomax, but I think that if I get off the medicine as soon as possible then the baby will be okay. I'm only nine weeks now. Any advice? Feel free to email, I'd like any advice I can get, because I want to keep this baby, while the father and my parents think it would be best to get rid of it. mcannonk@yahoo.com Thank you anyone who helps.
(for some background information. I am on the Seroquel and Topomax for bi-polar disorder. I am on the Soboxone for a previous opiate addiction. I was taking the Klonopins for stress, because it was unknown that I was pregnant. I am 19 years old. I have my first obgyn appointment Jan. 8th and I am going to ask for an early ultrasound so I can see if there are any complications.) Again, thank you very much for any help. It's much needed. This is my first pregnancy. |
