I was formerly taking Risperdal (4mgs daily for Mania) and I have hit a state of being manic and depressed for the past month. I have went several weeks dealing with going from mania, to hypomania, and always feeling depressed especially during the manic phases... as well as not sleeping at all.
My pdoc decided to switch me to Seroquel, starting me on 100mgs the first night, then 200mgs the next night, then finally 300 mgs on the third night.
The first night I have taken it, within 20 minutes of taking the 100 mgs I felt really drunk and sleepy (which I expected)... but as I tried to go to bed I began having this agitation feeling physically. I literally felt like making fists and kicking my feet would get rid of the agitated feeling. Eventually, I took a Klonopin and it knocked me out the rest of the way.

I have spoken to several pharmacists to find out if this is a side effect with Seroquel, which they told me it wasnt..?
Then, I talked to my pdoc and he told me I should have taken another 100mgs that night if I wasnt asleep soon after taking the first 100mgs and that would have knocked me out. But, he said taking the klonopin was okay too. He is insistent that I get up to the 300mgs still.
My question is... is starting out with such high dosages normal? I have had many people tell me that it is recommended to start out on low doses to begin with, and that getting up to 300mgs within a matter of a couple of days is not good.
Also, my pdoc thought that perhaps bc I was so manic for so long that the agitation was coming from being so strung out with agitation from the mania, and that raising the dosage of the Seroquel would cause that agitation to subside. Yet, I am afraid to raise it anymore for fear that if the Seroquel caused the agitation, then raising it would make the agitation even worse.:(
I cant seem to find any answers and was just wondering what everyone thought about my concerns and if I am just being too paranoid about it.

LOL Same here. When I was first put on it I was a wreck. Laying in bed and kicking all over the place. The nurse told me to let the doctor know to bring the dosage down... I did.. And it made a world of difference. Suggestion? Take Seroquel and go right to bed. Don't wait. My increases were at 25mg at a time. I made the doctor work with me. I am no ones guinei pig. But, I am honest with her if I need to increase it. Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply! Ya know I never even thought about that! Perhaps 100mgs for the first dose is too high for my body to adjust to and cope with so suddenly. Gosh, I have to find things out and tell my pdoc everything lol Actually his theory was that I wasnt taking a high enough dose and I should have started out with a higher dose than that! So his idea was going in the opposite direction.
Hmm... I am due to see him in the morning so I will mention this to him :) Thank you very much for your input! It has helped me greatly!
BTW.... bc I couldnt make sense out of it all, I chose to go back on the Risperdal I was taking until I was able to talk to my pdoc about this... so I havent taken the Seroquel since that first night. Will let you know what he says tomorrow :)

Remember one thing. Switching back and forth on meds isn't good either. You can always score your seroquel (meaning cut it in half with a pill cutter). Even though, the manf doesn't make it to be scored at least you can try it at a lower dosage to see if it helps with the side affects. Docs often fight us, but again they aren't living with the nightmare of the physical side affects. So stay patient and also, there is a med you can take for the side affect. Ask him for it. Don't recall the name right off the bat. But, there is one.

My pdoc initially started me on 25 mg's. That's the level that it is a sedating effect, anything under 25. When you go over that, you can get the restless leg agitation (I had it the first three nights, I ended up taking a bath with Lavender oil and that stopped it). But now after a month of being on it, I've gained 20 pounds and am just as depressed as before. It seems like any and all of the mood stabilizers out there cause weight gain. I'm just trying to find a happy medium. I had a good baseline going for the first three weeks and now, boom, I've dropped back down again. I'm a little scared.
