My daughter (under 30 years old) had to take warfarin for the DVT in her leg, as a result of being on the patch for 4 weeks. The DVT is gone but since she has been off the warfarin, various co-workers have stated to us that she seems to have some memory loss. Has anyone else experienced this after taking warfarin or coumadin? Just as a side note, I can not believe that women still use the patch, and I find it especially hard to believe it of women who read this site.

I had multiple clots in my lungs (PEs) after being on Nuva Ring; I also tested positive for Factor V Leiden. That combination raised my risk considerably.

Since the PEs three weeks ago (I went in the ER and was in hosp 4 days), I am on Coumadin. I am having some short term memory problems and find I am searching for a word or saying the wrong word. Could be stress, but I fear it's ongoing fatigue related to taking the Coumadin. I don't think it's a brain damage situation in your daughter's case or mine. I am so sorry to hear she had this problem, and so young! I am 44, which still seems young. Clearly, your daughter's problem was from the patch. Look into the class action suits that are being filed. They should take this stuff off the market!

Interesting post. I had a PE discovered on May 1, 2008. I've been on warfarin since...over 9 months now (just had my blood draws done a couple of weeks ago...will know genetic testing results on Feb. 20) I have some family history, but sadly took the birth control Yaz....believed to be the culprit in so many blood clots. I feel pretty good most of the time, but do experience some muscle aches and have noticed memory loss/mixing of words (especially true when I am tired). I believe that this has something to do with taking warfarin. Tonight I am extremely tired and find myself having to really search for words, names, etc. while talking...which just scares me to death (feel like I am losing my mind), but I know that others experience this as well so know that I am not alone.

My mother has been taking coumadin for over 10yrs . Along with other heart medication such as toprol to which is a beta blocker that alters the brain, changes the personality, and rottens the teeth and bone. Our family was just made aware of the fact that coumadin can alter the brain as well. We are seeking natural supplements as an alternative. Monika, University City,Mo

Wow....i've been on warfarin for 1.5 years now...settled with ortho evra last year over PE's twice because of the patch. I, too, have found myself searching for words, not using the right words, etc. I thought it was just me. Although i'm sadden that others are going through the same thing, i'm kinda glad to know that it could be a side effect from taking the warfarin. Alters the brain...that is horrible!!!

Been on warfarin since April. Had a blood clot in my leg, then found out I have a factor 5 defect. Im tested now every 3 weeks and am holding a 2.9 INR. I am actually blown away by hearing all this talk about memory loss. I feel like I have Alzheimers since being on Warfarin. I tell the same story twice in about 15 minutes. I forget if people were with me while I told a story, and I'll tell it again. I cant remember names. Every time I want to say something about someone, I have to play charades so people can help me guess the name Im talking about. WOW I have to go to the doctor. But what else can you take? I dont want a PE either.

I had a PE 20 months ago. At times I totally blank out on a word or name. Its very annoying. I will have to speak to my doc about it. She wants me to stay on Warafin for life due to a blood disorder called APS. Strange that the it just started 6 months ago. Before that, no side effects from.

I had a PE on 9/9/9 ;-) - since taking warfarin I have struggled to remember words. Thought it was really strange but now think that its definitely a side effect from what Ive just read. Will consult my doctor but no doubt I will not be believed...

I appreciate all the letters you all have written. I thought I was losing my mind. I, too, have been on Warfarin for a long time.. 3 or 4 yrs. I have Atrial Fib..my memory is horrible. I constantly search for words and play the charades game, also. My son comented a couple days ago about me and the big "A"...that really pierced me..I am 80 y.o. and still work outside the home part-time w/ the public.I think I do my job quite well. My boss is great. I got my GED when I was 70 y.o.I've always said, age is just a number. People say they don't think of me as being older as in "old".. I never have either until recently since my memory and that word searching has gotten so bad.. I don't want to quit the warfarin and have a stroke.. Seems like I'm caught between a rock and a hard place.. Any suggestiong from anyone?? November 2009

My husband is a 42 yr old that was dx with APS in November of last yr. He has been on Warafin for a yr now and his memory is so bad. I feel bad saying it really gets on my nerves sometimes when I ask him something and he cant remember. I was thinking his memory problem was from the APS, but after reading all this im thinking it must be the Warafin. So what do we do, I have ask his Dr and he seems to think he is to young for memory loss meds. He will be on blood thinners for life, what other thinners are out there? Anything we can do?

Well, I can say that, for me, it comes and goes. Reight now I feel better than 6 months ago. I do not have true "memory loss" like I for get to do something. Its more like I "search" for words or names, more like a mental block than anything else. Like I said, it lasted for 6 months and is much better. The weird thing was I had no side effects for the 1st year and "boom" it hit.

Becky, Your husband sounds just like me. I was 39, had a PE and found I have APS.

Does he exercise......seems to help me.

Daily Horoscope for December 24

Virgo

You're struggling to get everything finished in time today, making you feel fractious and tired. At some point you may have to take a pragmatic decision about which tasks must be completed today and which will have to be postponed until another day. Do your best to keep things in proportion otherwise you'll waste time in trivial details and needless nit-picking.
