My doctor put me on a daily 40mg dose of nexium for moderate reflux which worked really well. After 6 months use I voluntarily reduced the dose to 20mg as a way to step off the drug and this worked ok too. I have been on this dose for over a year now and started to take the dose every other day because I dont believe you should take any drug infinitely. I just about got away with this and recently quit altogether which sure enough brought back the discomfort and bubbly tummy especially after meals. I thought Nexium was supposed to "heal" or correct the problem? Am I to be forever hooked on this drug? Anybody else been through this? I am a male of 42 in otherwise good shape.

Did anyone ever get back to Tony on this issue? I have recently started taking Nexium, and really do not want to be taking ANY drug for the rest of my life.
Has anyone weaned themselves off of acid-reducers? How? |

I have been on nexium for about 6 yrs. I've tried stopping but the reflux keeps coming back. I've tried on other natural remedies but none work. Nexium does have some bad side effects. |

I have been on it for years and latterly I have found I can take "time off".
But the gerd comes back. I read somewhere Mangosteen juice was as good as Nexium but doubt it. I see a big connection between what I eat and reflux.baked goods like muffins and cookies cause a huge spike in acid. anyone with this would benefit from a consult with a nutrtionist and a naturopath. There is a lot to be said for the concepts in the book Eat Right for Your Bloodtype. |

Has anyone tried eliminating onions, tomatoes, citrus, and caffeine?
I love all those things and hate the thought of giving them up. |

I've been on Nexium for 8 years. got off for only a few weeks before reflux returned. No caffine. onions or tomatoes. Looking for something else to use. I've changed my life and can't get healed. Tried other doctors as well. Hooked on Nexium.

I too have been on Nexium for many years. The thing that I think many of you are misunderstanding is that Nexium does not heal GERD--it heals the damage to the esophagus caused by GERD. If you have reflux, you will unfortunately have it for the rest of your life. Unless doctors/researchers come up with something in the future, one is always going to have diet restictions and/or medication. |

I too believe nexium has altered my body. I've tried to stop taking it but my body is too use to it. I feel the only way off this drug is to fast for a long time, over 10 days maybe more. Then reinstitute a new diet and lifestyle change.

I have been on Nexium for almost 15 years now. I try to skip only 1 day and nasty heartburn is back. The reason I had been started on it, was I was choking on food that couldn't go down my esophagus in a resturant. I kept trying to drink the hot tea to help aid it down, to no avail. My husband had to do the heimlich on me!! How embarrassing, but oh well. My point, it keeps me safe and I know it isn't good, but I have no choice. Now with all the media on woman and bone issues, hips breaking...very scary. but, nothing more scary that choking~
Good luck to all of you! |
