First of all, I'd like to give my condolescence to you and everyone who has lost a loved one. I lost my brother due to an accidental overdose of methadone on Nov. 18, 2003 at the age of 24. He was a Heroin addict. It's been 3 years now and my mother is suffering now more than before. What can my family and I do to help my mother?

Thank you for your response. I have been in contact with numerous people throughout the U.S and other countries. I would ask that you email me and I will send you updates on what we are accomplishing. I have also created a petition and forum where you can go and speak with others who have lost a family member or child from methadone. You can find the links on the memorial page I created for Ron. You can also read stories on the forum on how others have died from this drug.

Thanks

Eli...

My faith in God is what has gotten me through. I know I will see my son again. Check out this booklet:
http://www.epm.org/pdf/Heaven_booklet.pdf

Also, being proactive in tightening methadone prescriptions. Actually, I wish the mess was banned completely.

I don't really know how to use this forum. This is my first time....

I lost my husband on September 13th, 2004. I've been afraid to talk on the internet about it because I knew there were thousands of others out there feeling as pissed off as I am and I was afraid to bring up that anger and pain.
He didn't die of a methadone overdose. He was able to get off of that pain med after many years of addiction to it. Only to search for something else to satisfy his addiction. He went to over-the-counter medications like Coricidin, Nyquil and other cold medicines. Then....when that didn't completely satisfy......illegally obtained narcotics. He died of a massive free-morphine overdose. He thought he could take a lot just like all of the other medications. His first time was his last. Its because of his pain clinic doctor who prescribed Methadone for his back pain, and didn't explain about what it would/could do to him. Neither one of us were drug users, so we had no concept of addiction or what withdrawals were. He was hooked and Methadone proved to be the beginning of the end. He left me and his three beautiful young boys behind.
Did this happen to any of you?

I highly doubt a doc would prescribe methadone to a tiny baby. If you are an adult and taking prescribed methadone you should be responsible enough to keep it up so that children cannot get into it. Also, check out how many deaths were caused from oxycontin overdose. It's not the drug's fault. The drug has saved many more lives than it has taken, and that is FACT. The fault lies in the physicians, users, and ABUSERS of this drug. If you're not prescribed it, you have no business taking it, and if you ARE prescribed it, then you should take it AS prescribed and NOT give it to anyone else. ANY DRUG CAN KILL YOU IF YOU TAKE ENOUGH OF IT PEOPLE! I know that for myself, I always research ANY medication I am prescribed. I want to know what I am putting in my body and what effect it could have on my body. Who wouldn't??????

Tiny babies to chaplains are dying from methadone. This drug is not just about "drug addicts". The labeling is vague...the drug is unpredictable...and it's deadly. Up to 50% of the people that die from methadone have a prescription.
Your children could be given this drug by a doctor and be gone 3 days later. Just do some research and you will see what I mean.
This is just ONE part of the problem:

How many drugs do you know of that can kill a person from 1 pill or a half of pill? My fiancee was inpatient at the time of his death and didn't have time or access to research this medication he trusted the doctors and nurses and their presumed knowledge of this drug.

If you research your medications why on earth would you take a drug that is highly addictive and killed 4000 people in 2004?

I don't know the background to your story, but I am truly sorry for your loss. I know a lot about Methadone and most other drugs. I was in an accident and injured my neck and back when I was 22. For 15 years I abused every opiate I could get my hands on, even after years of legal trouble, losing family, friends, etc. I couldn't stop. When the Methadone clinic in my city opened I decided to give it a shot and for me, it worked.
I have attended 4 methadone clinics in the U.S. due to the fact that I was a Regional Call Center Manager and did a lot of traveling for my job. I have been on Methadone for 3 years and it saved my life, along with hundreds of other patients I've met. Since starting at the clinic I finished my degree and am now a practicing RN. I do still deal with the daily pain of ruptured discs in my neck and back, which is why I stay on the Methadone. I am out of the clinic now, and attending a pain clinic. I've met a lot of good people at the Methadone clinic though, and none of them have died from the methadone they were prescribed. We HAVE, in WV, had a few people die from overdosing on Methadone because either 1) they were taking other substances, such as benzos, that they weren't prescribed and shouldn't have been taking anyway, or 2)they overdosed on Methadone that they weren't prescribed. Most deaths are due to substance ABUSE. They abused the drug, obtained it illegally, mixed the drug with another illicit drug, it goes on and on and on.....You can't blame the drug. Then there are, on occassions, stories like yours, however, recently docs have begun to educate themselves more due to the attention Methadone is getting. You have to blame the doctors and the health care providers for not educating themselves about this very dangerous drug. And sadly, you have to place the blame on the addicts who abused the drug. Yes, it can be dangerous when USED INCORRECTLY, but when used the right way, it saves lives, PERIOD. Thousands of lives that would have been wasted, like mine.

There are A LOT more stories like mine then you are aware of...read through my petition you will see. Doctor's are giving out methadone for everything from migraines to fibromalagia and people are dying. I just want the drug to be safer and to have ALL doctors be certified to dispense methadone the same way addiction doctors must when prescribing for opiate addiction. To a person who is taking their methadone properly I am no threat to them...it's the ones who are abusing it that should feel threatened.

My Dr. put me on Methadone to detox from 10/325 vicodin that I took 12 times a day. I'm scared because I'm also on 3 mg's of Xanax combined with Valium 20 mg's daily. From what I've read, I may not wake up...I'm afraid to sleep at night and even after telling them my concerns and the trouble I have breathing, they just say you'll get used to it or cut down a little bit. I don't know what to do..I'm an addictive mess! And the anxiety is out of control. I started benzo's first then the Vicodin. I don't know what to do...any suggestions?

Lisa,
I totally agree with you, and so do hundreds of thousands of other people. But you are wasting your time if you are trying to explain anything here.
If the people who are anti-methadone would try to stop methadone abuse with people who illegally get it or people illegally selling their pills, or people abusing their prescriptions, they would have a cause that most anyone would agree. And even if they wanted to fight for physicians to have better knowledge about prescribing it. But instead they argue with people who are not breaking the law, and the ones such as us who are SAVED by Methadone. If they would just accept the fact that we are not breaking the law, we have a new chance at life because of Methadone, and it really is NONE of their business as long as we are legally taking our medicine as prescribed. They know they can't fight the big dogs, so they start fights with people who are doing nothing wrong at all illegal.
It is our life. That is why I quit posting here. It is impossible to make them understand that they are fighting the WRONG people!!

Melissa,
I'm sorry that I didn't read your response before I posted. I have never hard you say these things before, but if you are serious with what you say, heck, that's a fight I would stand up for.
You see, the assholes who illegally sell their scripts, don't take them the prescribed way, and the ones buying them on the streets for a "buzz" are totally wrecking it for those of us who just want to live a productive life with no pain.
Thanks, Melissa,

Reetz I have said this several time but we just get so wrapped up in the whole methadone debate. The fact is I don't like methadone, personally I hated it even before Ron died from it...but that is not my battle, that is my opinion. For the purpose of my fight I want to make it safer please read my petition and you will see how I feel.

As a dear friend of yours once told me,"this is a public forum and anyone can post." YOU don't own this forum.
You don't see me replying to anyone who is addressing what this forum about, and I was only here to read, until I saw someone that I could possibly help. Just because someone posts here Th a problem or question which is different from the topic that started this thread, does NOT mean we should ignore their problem/ques ion. Forums are to HELP people, regardless of the thread they have come to ask for help.

My son Billy age 25 died on November 3rd, 2006 from taking one Methadone tablet with a valium. Billy was stressed with school and an aquaintenance offered him a pill stating that it would make him feel relaxed. Billy went to sleep that night and never woke up. Billy was our firstborn. Billy had such a light in our lives. Not only do we have the heartbreak that Billy died but he died on his brother's 24th birthday. The truth about Methadone needs to be shouted out!! I only learned that Methadone was a killer after hearing about Anna Nicole's son dying. There should be education warning everyone the dangers of Methodone

To Zach's mom:

I am Michael Houston's mother and he passed away October 2, 2002 from acute methadone poisoning. The 20/20 show that was on ABC, One Pill Can Kill, was about our son and the many others who have lost a loved one to methadone poisoning. I want to thank you so much for starting this forum and for hopefully saving many lives. My son was not a drug addict, so this medication can kill anyone. I am trying to begin a Nope Task Force in Winston-Salem, NC and can use all of the help I can get. Maybe together we can stop anyone else from being a statistic.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Gemini

You're in a warm-hearted and generous mood today, especially when dealing with loved ones and members of the family. You want to give them as much of your time as possible, and also to do anything else that will keep them happy. The only snag will come if you're trying to spread yourself too thin and you end up making promises that will be difficult, if not impossible, to keep. You may forget all about them but other people won't.
