Robert wrote: <quoted text> I have a simple basis, I recognize that the government gets to decide whether or not I get to drive drunk. But I don't recognize that the government gets to decide if I drink, that is my decision. The government does not get to decide if I smoke cigarettes even though it is bad for me. The government does not get to decide if I eat broccoli vs a steak well marbled with fat. The government does not get to decide if I drive a car or motorcycle even though a car is obviously safer. I don't understand anyone's desire for the government to decide if it is ok or not for them to smoke marijuana. I just don't trust the government to make smart decisions about my health and well being, I do trust myself to make decisions about my health and well being. Kudos for the people of Colorado for wanting to decide for themselves instead of wanting the government to decide. Okay so we have here a man who could drink when he was 5, smoke when he was 6 and drive his car/motorcycle when he was 7 cause the government NEVER tells him what to do. Hey, I'm impressed. Think I might move to Colorado myself, seems like they got no rules at all... lol

If Obama wants to get legalized marijuana, he will have to get it through congress, which is a real, rational, mind-using branch of the Government.

If people were really concerned about substances used by humans that result in loss of life, then Marijuana wouldn't even be a concern. Tobacco which kills over 300,000 Americans each year, seems to be of little concern with the same people who vehemently oppose the legalization of marijuana. Opponents of legalizing marijuana also don't seem to have a problem with 70,000 Americans dying each year from the detrimental effects of alcohol, yet Marijuana now that's that evil demon weed! If you look up the statistics on marijuana it's extremely difficult to locate any sources that can contribute 10 deaths annually to marijuana let alone 470,000 deaths as in the cases with tobacco and alcohol use. The argument against the legalization of marijuana is amazingly fallacious and lacks ethical consistency, it would be comparable to giving your neighbor a 45 automatic handgun to play with, but then complaining about the inherent dangers of a BB gun.

Obama has no intention of legalizing marijuana. or lifting the US ban on hemp. or disbanding the DEA. . (back away and realize that this has to do with big business and money)

I should have said "it's extremely difficult to locate any sources that can contribute 10 deaths annually to marijuana let alone (370,000) deaths as in the cases with tobacco and alcohol use. I believe the use of tobacco products averages between 300,000 and 350,000 deaths per year, but for fairness let's use the lowest figure 300,000

karmalyzed wrote: What Other Adverse Effect Does Marijuana Have on Health? Effects on the Heart Marijuana increases heart rate by 20-100 percent shortly after smoking; this effect can last up to 3 hours. In one study, it was estimated that marijuana users have a 4.8-fold increase in the risk of heart attack in the first hour after smoking the drug. This may be due to increased heart rate as well as the effects of marijuana on heart rhythms, causing palpitations and arrhythmias. This risk may be greater in aging populations or in those with cardiac vulnerabilities. Effects on the Lungs Numerous studies have shown marijuana smoke to contain carcinogens and to be an irritant to the lungs. In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50-70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke. Marijuana users usually inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer than tobacco smokers do, which further increase the lungs' exposure to carcinogenic smoke. Marijuana smokers show dysregulated growth of epithelial cells in their lung tissue, which could lead to cancer; however, a recent case-controlled study found no positive associations between marijuana use and lung, upper respiratory, or upper digestive tract cancers. Thus, the link between marijuana smoking and these cancers remains unsubstantiated at this time. Nonetheless, marijuana smokers can have many of the same respiratory problems as tobacco smokers, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illness, and a heightened risk of lung infections. A study of 450 individuals found that people who smoke marijuana frequently but do not smoke tobacco have more health problems and miss more days of work than nonsmokers. Many of the extra sick days among the marijuana smokers in the study were for respiratory illnesses. Effects on Daily Life Research clearly demonstrates that marijuana has the potential to cause problems in daily life or make a person's existing problems worse. In one study, heavy marijuana abusers reported that the drug impaired several important measures of life achievement, including physical and mental health, cognitive abilities, social life, and career status. Several studies associate workers' marijuana smoking with increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers' compensation claims, and job turnover. ( Taken from the National Institute of Health ) this information is ancient, try to find something a little more recent like this, http://www.cancer.org/Treatment/Treatmentsand...
