Lithium, which is used by psychiatrists as the mainstay of therapy for bi-polar disorder and which has been cleared for this use by the FDA,is a poison. Its clearance and use raises many serious questions about the attitudes and policies of the FDA,the drug companies which make lithium and psychiatrists. It appears as if it is their position that the people they label as suffering from bi-polar disorder are not worth saving and so why not debilitate them with lithium. This is all a reflection of a Nazi styled approach to mental healthcare. Even when used within suggested therapeutic levels lithium causes the following side effects: tremor, rash, polyuria, nephrogen ic diabetes insipidus, renal tubular acidosis, decreased concentration, memory loss, ataxia and dysarthria. An Alternative Medicine approach has often proven safe and effective in the prevention and cure of bi-polar disorder. This approach includes a good diet, adequate rest and relaxation, meditation, exercise and time in nature whenever possible, vitamin and mineral supplements and positive support systems to pursue your educational and career interests with the same normal social exchanges and payment for your work as other people. If you really feel that you have some type of problem with your moods you should take lecithin along with vitamin and mineral supplements and adhere to a healthy lifestyle. This alternative medicine approach to what the sadistic psychiatrists call bipolar disorder is safe and effective and good for anyone as a preventative measure. Never said i did know more than you, re read my post. Also, I've been on lithium for a few years and I'm healthy. I'm not saying you're wrong at all, just that I'm not having any problems, and they do regular lab tests on me. I live a healthy lifestyle already, I'm an ice skater.

Doctor, if you even are a doctor, you are a quack. You can join hands with the many that believe mood disorders are a falicy. You can then all talk about conspiricies and the attempt to dominate the world thru dispersment of medication. The fact of the matter is there are people who's brains function differently then the norm and many of these people, to include myself, have benefitted from the use of Lithium. So Doctor.... here is my question for you: Is it better to live life Bipolar and possibly succome to the illness down the road from some un-safe activity brought about by an episode or take a medication which allows me to live a fulfill life with the risks of side effects from the medication? I have made up my mind. Maybe you should realize that, with the internet, patients have access to studies and medical information to make there own informed decesions. The poison, Doctor, is posting a messege like you did expecting to persuade people because you are a "doctor?"

I took lithium for a few years and it fucked me up big time.I had several mild side affects for a while but then It got to the point of toxicity. My Med DR. who was actually a nurse practitioner ignored my toxicity even after a real doctor at the ER diognosed it. She told me I could become very sick, not mentally but phisically maybe even die,if I stoped taking my meds.First I had pains in my eyes and blurred/double vision but when they switched me to a different brand and upped the dosage I went nuts. I had never been really crazy just angry but on the pills I had hallucinations and stuff. I thought I was comunicating with god and that he hated me. I thought I was going to be killed and go to hell.I spent nearlly two years like that doing nothing but slleping and trying to go to school the whole time freaking out. I couldn't eat without being sick I couldn't sleep with out a handfull of pills and I was always scared. I've been off all drugs for over a year now and I am doing grat. I don't go crazy I haven't killed myself or anyone else and I'm making plans to go to school for graphic arts. Maybe lithium helps some but it really fucked up my life. I'm a lot better now that I stopped taking it but I still can't go to church and I'm not sure I even still belive in god. So bottom line I hate Lithium

I agree with The Shaneiac, there is a plethora of information and we are intelligent enough to make or own decisions. Each and every body will react a little different to any drug. Read the side effects of each plus common Tylenol… Heck if some people might die from eating peanut butter WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS FROM TAKING LECITHIN SUPPLEMENTS? In higher doses, lecithin supplements could cause gastrointestinal problems, diarrhea, weight gain, a rash and headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and/or a "fishy" body odor. Hmmmm those side effects sound worse than lithium. LITHIUM SIDE EFFECTS Most patients do not experience serious side effects when they begin lithium therapy. Initially, the patient may have slight nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhea, thirstiness, muscle weakness, and feelings of being somewhat tired, dazed, or sleepy. A mild hand tremor may emerge as the dose is increased. These effects are normally minimal and usually subside after several days of treatment TYLENOL SIDE EFFECTS:(Sounds the worse of all) What are the possible side effects of acetaminophen (TYLENOL)? • If you experience any of the following rare but serious side effects, stop taking acetaminophen and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately: · an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); · liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, unusual bleeding or bruising, severe fatigue); · blood problems (easy or unusual bleeding or bruising). • Other, less serious side effects are not known to occur. • Side effects other than those listed here may occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

I had a very similar expirence with Lithium! I was a zombie... I was so out of it... My friends started to notice a change in me. I could not eat anything because I couldn't keep anything down. I was so dehirdated. I shook like crazy. I couldn't hold conversations with people. I had serious head aches. My vision was blurred. My eyes were senative toward everything. I fainted many times. One time I had fainted in the middle of school during my math test. I hit the ground and my body was flapping around. I went to the doctors many times. I had many test done to try to find out what was the matter with me. When they would try to get my pulse it was always irregular. I had blood tests every month in which they would have a hard time getting the blood to check my levels. My blood was so thick that it would take a while to fill the tubes. I was always dizzy. I had gotten pregnant about the time I was put on Lithium. I lost the baby. I felt as if I was crazy. So many unexplainable things took place but yet I was the only one who knew about it. I had a great deal of trouble sleeping. I couldn't tell what was real and what was not. I will always remember the way I felt on Lithium. I never want to feel that way ever. I felt so gross inside. I felt as if I was trapped in a dead person's body. I feel as if I lost time from my life. And I am scared of the toll that it will take on my body in the future. I had to continue taking Lithium in order to graduate from my high school. I didn't even want to be on meds in the first place. I was taking alot of different meds. While on Lithium I felt as if my soul had gotten lost along with my mind. I knew I was a harm to myself and exspecially others. I didn't know what went on the whole time I was on Lithium and yet I was the only one who was there. I can't recall much about what had happened in that time spand. I just remember how shitty I felt! I don't think any one should need to go thru that! Y the hell is it approved??? Here is the problem with this forum, there is little critical thinking going on. A few people here have made some reaonable arguements and the first hint of logic was questioning the Dr.'s credentials. I looked him up on line and found several Harold Mendel's. No psychs but look him up for yourself and decide his validity. Any attack on him from me would only cause him to respond. Is Lithium a poison? No. Is a Ring Ding a poison? No. Neither are good for you but a ring ding in the mouth of someone allergic to chocolate or stray peanut oil would become sick or die. Same for lithium and every single medication on the market as well as alternative meds which also are deadly. Its russian roullette (sorry for the spelling) when ever you take anything...natural or not. What do we look at in these arguements against lithium. 1)Personal anecdotal info. Yes you may become ill on it and as another pointed out Tylenol may do it too. You may also be able to think straight and lead a life with no to mild side effects over potential mania. 2)Use of stong language on the Dr.'s part. Lithium is a poison. Comparing the FDA (big secret government) to the NAZI's. Sickness. Death. We are swallowing lithium and that makes us feel hopeless in a battle against something that can so easily strip you of your hope. This reduces his claims to being an URBAN LEGEND. 3)What are the control experiments he has conducted and what research does he have to back this up? Who did the research and are they independent or do they have something to gain? 4)For that matter what does the Dr have to gain? What are his credentials? Does he work for homeopathic production company's? I notice one of the DR Mendels I found online mentions he is a psychiatrist and CEO. CEO of what? 5)How do you measure fatality results to lithium? It has been in use since the 1960's so in 40 years what amount of data has been collected globally concerning premature deaths resulting in not lithium toxicity (over dose on your own personal resiliance to high or low lithium content)but deaths as a result of lithium actually killing people? 6)If there is data then a Dr. so caring enough to begin this thread will supply a link or copy of the medical journals he writes for or has read concerning this issue. Okay...so we question his credentials. Who am I? Well, certainly don't trust my point of view that this is more than likely a lie or bullshit or someone with something to gain in pushing alternative medicines. I am an anthropologist and not a psychiatrist but my entire training has been spent in weeding out crap. My focus is on debunking urban legends and false claims (for instance alternitive medications like magnet therapy, reflexology, so on and so on) and this just rings of bad idea. People. STay on your meds and if you have any side effects tell your DR. If they don't believe you sue them for malpractice and get yourself another dr. If you are feeling drunk, you are toxic and need a hospital cause you could die. If it is coming out your tear ducts and it burns you are on too much. If you see double, anything, its just not for you. I personally can't take Tegretol or it will kill me but for you, its not necessarily a poison. Please stop responding to the Mendel fucker who comes on here to scare you. This douche only wants to throw words like Death and Poison at people to scare them. Don't be scared. If you don't like your pill get on another but don't let me or anyone else on the internet tell you anything. Just do a little thinking, a little research and ask some of those questions I put forth. Take care everyone.

I just started taking Lithium two days ago. 450 mg in the morning and the same dose at night. So far I have been a complete zombie. I have lost my appetite, stay nauseated, unmotivated, dizzy. I am hoping maybe after it kicks in good it will all go away. I've tried all other meds for my bi-polar disorder and this was my last alternative. It seems I felt better before the med. Any advice on my sympoms going away?

the really scary thing is that most people getting on to this site have done so because they are unwell, isolated and have known mental pain at some stage..including me! that makes us vunerable..this scientology crap really makes me mad tho'..don't believe a word of it guys..its just overblown paranoia because mr.hubbard had a bad psych experience..oh, sorry=did i say that..whoops here come Tom and Katie with a HUGE lawsuit..Seriously though..tegretol can mess up white blood cells and i should know, but off it 6 months and back to normal-well..as normal as i was before! Lithium , have known people on it for a long time, they generally do put on a bit of weight etc but can accomplish loads and are much more settled-read any book by kay redfield jamison. i have found the newer ssris and effexor really good, and what has really helped loads is taking a strong b vitamin complex .Its hard to have this demon illness, harder to accept it and live with the shame of it at times, but why not just take the pills and get your lives back instead of battling with the very thing that can make life bearable-or in my case-save your life! Take Care you guys..

I have been on Lithium for over 10 years. It does make me tired and zombie like, but I don't mind. I would rather be laid back in the free world than having episodes in the mental hospital. I have been in a few hospitals, they suck. Ever since I started taking Lithium, I am free! I wish it would not make me so tired though.
