There is no generic for Lipitor, wish there was. I would take it. You must have been switched to a generic of another statin. And if you think the statin generics are hard to pronounce, you should see many of the others. Enjoy your column. You always make me smile! Dot too!

There is a nomenclature system from which drugs are named. This is what is used by generics...to provide some structure, uniformity, and aid the healthcare professional. Contrary to your opinion, an unstructured system would be the cause for much -additional- confusion. While a health care professional may or may not know "Sludge Rooter", the astute drug name you have provided as an example, he or she will definitely be familiar with the suffix "statin".

Definately no generic for Lipitor yet, but when it comes out (between 2011 and 2013) It will be called atorvastatin. Other generics are simvastatin (Zocor), pravastatin (Pravachol), fluvastatin (Lescol), lovastatin (Mevacor). Anyways, I had to start my day this morning trying to explain to an angry patient why you have generic Lipitor and she can't have it. Thanks

I see others have already pointed out that you were not switched to generic Lipitor. You were switched to a generic version of an entirely different medication, most likely Zocor. There are hundreds of scientists losing there jobs in Groton this week in anticipation of 2011, when Lipitor is legally available in generic form.
