I just started low dosed of this medication and I asked my doctor the same question!

She says that it does not have any effects on erections at all. However beta blockers (another drug to control hypertension, which is my case) do.

It sure does, not only ed but also lowered libido(desire) This I believe is due to zinc depletion. Try a zinc supplement and see if it helps.

Wow, I have been on a Beta blocker (nadalol for 23 years). NEVER had libido or erection issues. According to my wife I had just the opposite issues! Maybe I have been lucky in that regards.

I just started taking hydrochlorothiazide two weeks ago and i have noticed muscle cramps in my legs and my hands. i do think it is the drug that is causing this side effect, but i don't know what to do. when i called my doctor's office the nurse told me to take only half of the dose (half of the tiny 25mg dose pill will be hard to do). Anybody else out there with this problem?

Yes, I have had the same thing. Has your doctor done a metabolic panel to check your electrolytes? I had low potassium and chloride from 12.5 mgs which I take in addition to Benicar. I have researched and found out that this med causes many side effects, as harmless as they claim it is. It can give you imbalance in your fluids causing potentially dangerous problems. Check with your doctor and have him run a metabolic panel. Your potassium may be low, that would cause the cramps. Hope this helps.

I woke up screamin' at 5:00am with a huge charlie horse in my calf muscle. I thought I was gonna die. I went on hydrochlorithiazide 3 wks ago and started getting small cramps in my hands and legs, then all of a sudden this huge one. I can hardly walk today. I realized it must be the medicine, and searched the web. I was glad to see these comments, just wondering if there's anything to do immediately (besides drink lots of water and juice). Eat banana's etc?

I had been on HCTZ along with Atenolol and Lisinopril for 10+ years. I found myself in the ER two weeks ago with sodium levels so dangerously low that they admitted me. I also had muscle cramping, twitching, and weakness in my legs.

It was decided that it was the HCTZ that was causing my problems. I have been off of it for a little over two weeks ago and my sodium levels and muscle problems are S-L-O-W-L-Y resolving.

I'm just hoping the HCTZ was the culprit and that I'll soon be back to normal. In the meantime I do have an appointment with a nephrologist scheduled.
