I just spent 4 days in the jungle near Iquitos, Peru. Depite precautions, I certainly had my share of mosquito bites, maybe 30. FOUR separate Peruvian pharmascists said take Doxy 100 mg. two or three times a day just before and during exposure period, and then once a day a few days thereafter. CDC Atlanta says 100 mg. a day just before, during, and 28 days after.

Local health clinic serving population base of 10,000 to 20,000 reports about 1 case a day of malaria this time of year.

Per travel companions (non-Doc.s, but sophisticated) malaria in Peru is usually not as horrible as in Africa.

So...should I take Doxy for the full 28 days? I do have rashes (not horrible) despite sunscreen, and question whether dreams are normal (possibly just due to change in sleep patterns).

Any physician or other health professional with relevant or Peru specific comment?

My son is traveling in Cambodia and Vietnam as he and his companion decided to stay longer than first expected they didn't take enough malarone. They bought some Doxycycline in Bangkok so he is taking that and has e-mailed me to say it is giving him nightmares.

I have been trying to find out if this is a normal side effect none of of the information I have read notes this as a side effect but some of the others sound quite nasty!!

Am comforted to hear others are taking this to prevent malaria but is it as effective as Malarone??

I was perscribed Doryx (doxycycline 75mg) for possible exposure to Lymes and I have definitely been having nightmares every night. I havent found any other info about this but I never have dreams or remember them and this has been every night!

I have been taking Doryx for one week for acne and have already had three very vivid bad dreams unlike any that I have had before. In one dream I was mauled by a tiger at the zoo and in the other two my husband tried to kill me in various ways! It is very unusual and I guess that may play a role in whether I continue to take it long term. I may try to cut the dosage in half as my doctor said I could do that.

There isn't much information available about Doryx and side effects so I am interested to see if other people are having the same experiences.

Daily Horoscope for December 20

Virgo

Unfortunately, this looks like being another difficult day, and, as Mars turns retrograde, certain people are quick to take offence or raise their voices. Make sure you aren't adding to the tension by doing or saying something that's provocative or even downright insulting. If you get involved in a shouting match it will be difficult to stop and you could say some nasty things in the heat of the moment.
