I am currently taking 100mg/day for doxycycline Monohydrate-capsule for acne. I was wondering what the difference between Doxycycline Monohydrate and Hyclate is. I pay out-of-pocket for the RX and the hyclate costs alot less. The drug has been very effective and I haven't had a noticeable side-effects. So is this something worth pursuing? Thanks in advance.

The active ingredient is the same in both but doxcycline monohydrate is formulated to produce less gastrointestinal irritation.

Can anyone go into a little bit more detail about which one is more effective for acne. From what I've read it appears that the hyclate is more potent, but I'm really not sure, and like david said, the Hyclate is far more affordable, so if it is stronger and cheaper it might be better the the doxy. monohydrate that I'm taking now (that doesnt seem to be that effective).

Doryx is a ENTERIC-COATED doxycycline hyclate which means that it breaks down in the small intestine vs. stomach. It is great because you get less gastric problems and take it only once a day, with no food restrictions. =0)

I used to take doxy monohydrate and my dr said it takes 3 months for acne to be totally gone. mine started to clear way before then, but in 3 months i had no blemishes at alll. i was also wondering about the hyclate vs monohydrate. so the major difference is not effect but the side effect of GI distress (with the hyclate?)

My doctor prescribed doxycycline for rosacea. The first prescriptions were for Hyclate (which at Costco runs about $7+ dollars). This last time, the assistant wrote the prescription for mono - imagine my shock when the bill was $30.10 at Costco!
Is one any better than the other? The only difference I see on the label is that the mono says to take on an empty stomach; 2-3 hours before or after a meal. Also 2-3 hours before or after items containing calcium, magnesium, iron or zinc. I have been taking it right before I go to bed in the evening.
If there is no substantial difference, the $7+ dollar one is fine with me & I will get the assistant to be sure to write it for the hyclate. As it is, for this next go round, I may have to go without it until the first of the month each month.

I found that it usually takes at least a month before you could see any difference in skin problems, and a good 3 months before real progress is made. Take a look at www.doxycycline-100mg.com for for help and advice.

I have been taking doxycycline hyclate for acne since january. Recently I was prescribed doxycycline to treat a possible testicle infection possibly due to chlamydia. I forgot to tell the doctor that I was already on the hyclate and now prescribed me the doxycycline (minus the "hyclate". My question: could I have possibly have already developed an immunity for this? How much different are they? Should I continue the doxy hyclate i was already on, or should I drop it and start the new one i just got prescribed?

Any info is helpful.

Yes you can minimize the diarrhea in the following ways:

Take capsules of oregano or oregano oil, one cap with meals, twice a day.

Or, and I think this is better, take saccharomyces boulardii caps, two a day, with or without food. You can get this at reasonable cost from Vitacost.com online, choose the Jarrow Formulas brand.

Possible reasons for your diarrhea are bacterial or fungal overgrowth due to the doxy killing off most of the good intestinal flora. Of particular concern is that you could get a case of clostridium difficile as a consequence of long term antibiotic use. The s. boulardii is very helpful with this; the oregano less so. If your diarrhea persists after taking these supplements, see your doctor. C. difficile is nothing to mess around with.

Finally, don't take pepto or similar substances, as these will reduce the effectiveness of the doxy.

There are other causes of orchitis and epididymitis than chlamydia. One possible cause is trichomoniasis. Most bacterial causes of chlamydia can be treated with doxy, including e. coli, p. aeruginosa, chlamydia, gonorrhea and others. But trich is a parasite, and must be treated with an antiparasitic, such as flagyl (metronidazole) or fasigyn (tinidazole). The fact that you have acquired a testicular infection while on doxy is significant and means that the bug you acquired is resistant to doxy. You need to tell your doc that you got an infection while on the doxy. Were you taking the doxy regularly? And no, the 2 types (hyclate, monohydrate) treat the same things, so that is not an issue.

Like "answers" said, you should take probiotics once a day to decrease diarrhea and yeast infection if you are on long term antibiotics.

Doxy hyclate use to cause nausea and vomitting but it has been reformulated to decrease this side effect. I would recommend it over monohydrate because it's cheaper. Also, hyclate salt is not affected by stomach pH so you can take it with antacids and other GERD meds(Maalox, Mylanta, Pepcid, Prilosec, Nexium, etc) unlike monohydrate.
