I took doxycycline during my first trimester before I knew I was pregnant. My baby was born with both arms ending a little below his elbows with no hands. Could doxycycline have caused this? Please help!

Oh my god!! I am asking so many doctors how long i have to be off the medication before it is safe to get pregnant and i keep getting different responces...

Yes its sure doxycycline was the reason for your babys condition... How is your baby? Boy or Girl? What do the docotrs say?
why were you taking Doxycline?

I will pray for you and your baby....

Keep your faith in God you will make it ...

Where do you base that yes taking Doxycycline was definitely the reason for your child's abnormalities. I am aksing this because the doctors that I have spoken to informed me that Doxy affects bone development toward the end of the pregnany. (2nd and 3rd trimester)

You should go to this drug site:
http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/penG_do...

...I sincerely hope are you serious about this, some of us are pregnant and concerned and this is a very scary accusation?

My husband (marine engineer) has just been posted to work in Abijan and has to take Malaria precautions. His Doctor prescribed doxycycline.
I was wondering if this is the usual medication for preventing Malaria.
Would any one know, as my husband had cancer 3 years ago (mouth cancer). Thanks.

It can, but that's something you need to talk to your doctor about. Pre-pregnancy visits with your OB and general practitioner are vital if you plan on becoming pregnant.

I have read up on this medication, and studies have shown that this medication is not considered super safe after the first 16 weeks of pregnancy. But this medication has been used to help people get pregnant and seems that in some areas of the world is even prescribed to pregnant women in their first trimester if they have been exposed to some lethal bacteria.....

So I feel that this quote was a little harsh and convicting to the mother of the baby that started this question forum....
Please know that in every situation there is a reason for what happens, and how it happens, God is always in control.....

I am 14 weeks pregnant and took Doxy during the first four weeks and when i found out i was pregnant i freaked out!! My doctors gave me loads of information about the drug and assured me that it is completely safe in the first 16 weeks. I had my 12 week ultrasound and everything was fine... all limbs seen.

Based on CDC guidelines for Malaria therapy, Doxycycline is one of the last choices for Malaria and often depending on the rest of your medical history the only choice. It is not generally recommended to use Doxycycline while you are pregnant but Malaria treatment is limited and the other drugs are more harmful to the fetus than doxycycline (a drug under the class of tetracyclines). Its all relative and your doctor is considering the benefits that outweigh the risk of you getting malaria. Overall it's general practice. Here is the link to the CDC webpage where you can obtain nationally accepted guideline for treating Malaria. http://www.cdc.gov/malaria/diagnosis_treatmen...

Tetracyclines
Tetracyclines are safe for use during the first 18 weeks of pregnancy (16 weeks post conception) after which they cause discolouration of the baby's teeth.
