I have been on Warfarin a;most two and one half yrs and lately I have had a severe itching rast onthe back of my neck. Have not been to Dr. about this hoping to control it myself. I can't blame it on Warfarin because I have always had very dry skin even before Warfarin. I am Blessed because of Warfarin!!

I am reading this stream and posting midway. Just started itching yesterday! Can't believe so many of you have been affected by itching for so long! Not looking forward to dealing with this color what sounds like the long term. Two comments: found my blood clot 6-7 years ago and the reason for it is a blood clotting disorder called Protein S deficiency. It seems hereditary, my dad has it too. You might check that if your trying to figure out why you developed clots. Second, last week I went through the ringer when my INR shot up to 5.6! I wonder if all the stress and fluctuation in meds while docs tried to figure things out brought on the itching.

I've had two serious postop DVTs, so am on Coumadin for life. Have been taking Coumadin since 2006, and 7 mos ago in 2011 I developed an intensely itchy "small, red bumps" type rash on both lower legs. elbows and back of neck. My INR has been quite stable in the target range. I take 9mg, so both tablets are colored, in case the dye is an issue. I tried all the OTC anti-itch creams, then tried numerousprescrition steroid creams- no relief from any of them. I've seen my primary care MD for it 3 times, and 2 different dermatologists, and had 2 biopsies done...all negative for anything specific. It has a real negative impact on my quality of life, as well as my sleep. Today I was told to be ready for it to last many years. I am considering switching to Pradaxa- has anyone gotten relief from the rash and itching by going onto Pradaxa and discontinuing Coumadin? Thanks!

Laurie wrote: Benadryl does effect the INR -- I managed over 600 patients and every one of my patients who took benadryl had increases in their INR's - the pharmacist also told them to be careful because it would. Now, if there has been a change in whats in benadryl over the last 3 years, I might agree with you but I can tell you that I was responsible for managing my patients in a cardiac office of 6 docs and they also would disagree with you that there isnt an increase in INR's because we saw it over and over. Laurie I get so inchy at night i thought it was bugs but no bites and only at night i take warfrin campex, and backlofin you think it is the warfrin? Elijah

Elijah try asking your GP for antihistamine tablets. I take them to try and ease the itching when it gets really bad. When it gets unbearable i stop my warfarin for a few days. Good luck.

My dad has been on coumadin since 2005; they say he is coumadin resistent, his dose has been 17.5 everyday. He's recently became ill and was given amoxicillan by his GP, who know's he's on coumadin and wanted him to come to her to get his INR checked instead of his heart DR. She did not tell us that amoxcillin would increase his INR, she also precribed tronadol a pain pill(which he occasionally took). The next week he injured his tore the ligamints in his knee and began taking the tronodol on a regular basis while still on the amoxacillan. The the knee injury he could not walk and finally home health came out and took his INR which was 6.7. He's had mental confusion, lack of appatite and generally feels horrible. He's now developed a rash on his back and has been running a low grade fever until today when this temp dropped to 96.6. I am at my wits end, I feel there is no communication between these DR's. he is exhausted beyond belief. I need help, i dont' know how to make these folk see that something serious is going on before it's too late. Please help

I posted a note on this issue in Oct 2011 when I was still on Coumadin (for 6 years due to 2 DVTs), and had been dealing with a terrible itchy rash on all limbs for many months. I decided to discontinue the Coumadin, and replaced it with Pradaxa, per my Dr's suggestion. Within 1 day the rash stopped spreading, and improved remarkably in the next week. I had a few small "sores" left from the rash, but no more itching. I then applied one of the many corticosteroid creams that were totally ineffective when I was on Coumadin, and within another week all signs of the rash were completely gone from all limbs! My Dr and I are convinced it was an adverse reaction to the Coumadin, as I've had no recurrence of the symptoms in the months since stopping it.

I wish I could take the pradaxa but my A-fib is valve related. I switched to a different mg of Coumadin and don't have the problem anymore. We think it was the dye in the Coumadin.

I have been on Warfin for several yrs. Three months ago I developed a horrible itch. We went through MANY treatments. Had the prednisone. It died down. Although not as bad it never goes away around the legs, shoulders, stomache. I have experimented with deleting things and other meds. It is worse after I take the Warfin, so I am really suspicious. Incidently both times I was on Digoxin it made me very dizzy.
