I am now on Lovenox after 19 years of never being able to regulate my INR from Warfarin-That is a very long time of having to watch my food intake of all things "Green" and foods containing Vitamin K- I have also found out that after over 8 DVT's mostly having all of them while I was perfectly anticoagulated I have Antipospolipid Syndrome I am very happy to be finally on Lovenox- Now I can have all the Green Veggies I want!

I have 2 issue with the statements concerning taking daily supplements that contain vitamin K. Firstly, ANY amount of vitamin K affects the INR. Secondly, that its ok to take supplements with vitamin K as long as you take them everyday, and therein lies the problem. Some people cant take them everyday, as a matter of fact quite a few people cannot tolerate a daily vitamin supplement. Often as not people forget to take them everyday. They don't treat a vitamin as 'medication. However, when on blood thinners vitamin K in supplement form now BECOMES medication. It can be serious, just as serious as missing blood pressure medication then stroking as a result. The best bet is either dont take vitamin supplements with K or find one that has no K in it. Don't take chances with such a serious matter.

Hello all - I am 41 years old and have been on Coumadin since I was 28 years old. I don't know everybody's background, but I have to remain on this therapy because I am protein S deficient - and since that is heavily tied to Vita K, I am told to not take a multi without K. The food I will eat will have plenty of K in it that is required. In any event, a Multi without Vita K is better than not taking a multi at all.

I can't take anything else but coumadin at this time. I was on Lovenox for a period, but I developed HIT which is caused by Heparin (Lovenox is made from Heparin). I am an extremely rare case where I have PSD and HIT together and have been a test case for the local hospital.

I guess all I really wanted to say, each person is different and your doctor or specialist should know what is best for you. You can learn a lot from forums such as this, but you need to broach the information you find here with your medical provider before starting or stopping something.

Keep the blood flowing, Thanks, Tim

I am on a huge dose of Coumadin - 30mg three days a week and 25mg the other four days! Prior to starting on Coumadin almost 6 months ago, I was taking flaxseed, omega XL,vitamin D, and multivitamins not Everyday but often. Now I feel tired a lot and short of breath occasionally and my bones ache, especially my back so I decided to start taking the multivitamins and Omega XL again. I was doing pretty good but over the past three weeks, my INR has gone from 2.4 to 2.3 and now 1.6! Any suggestions? I did speak with a pharmacist today who told me to go ahead and take a One A Day Vitamin and the doctor should regulate my dose of Coumadin around my use of vitamins instead of stopping them as I do need the supplements. I'm just concerned about the dose I am on but the pharmacist also says that it's because I'm young??? I am in my mid 50's! What's your opinion?

Wheezie, I appreciate your grammar correction. I will admit that when I am typing at late hours or early mornings trying to help someone manage their health, my spelling or proper grammar is not high on my list. I apologize if you judge my intelligence by the way I type or write - Im just normally in a hurry.
Laurie I completely agree with you. Sometimes we are all in a hurry. Some people get in a huff about proper English etc., Blah Blah Blah. Ha ha...people get in a hurry and I usually abreviate as text english. Most people these days are multitasking and in a hurry.

I have been eating reasonably a variety of foods including some that are on the don't eat list when you are on warfarin. I have been taking Shaklee's Multivitamin without iron and Vit K. My monthly blood numbers are about 2.5.As a former pharmacist I am satisfied with the results.

If I'm reading this correct it does not sound like anyone is saying cut all VK out of your diet but take a vitamin without it so your not getting so much extra because if your on a good diet your body should be getting all the VK it needs

Laurie although I don't doubt your knowledge on Coumadin and its interactions, most Coumadin patient get plenty of vit k in there diet. Maintaining a steady intake is key. Most of my patients have told me that they don't always take there vitamins and this requires the use of a vitamin that does not contain vit k. YES the body needs fit k NO you don't need it in your vitamin if you eat it in your diet. Depending on the patient and there habits I recommend a vit with or without vit k. Some patients are very sensitive to vit k and need very high doses of Coumadin to maintain an adequate INR! No situation is the same for every patient and it would be inappropriate for anyone to follow recommendations of anyone else without a provider patient relationship! So although I'm sure you do well for your patients everyone is different and you need to be careful with blanket statements such as the one you made above.

I am a heart patient and have been for years. My doctor told me to take Clotamin multivitamin because it doesnt have the clotting factors that would interact with my meds. He said it's good for people taking blood thinners too. I can tell I feel better when I take it. Especially in the mornings

Andrew, the only problem with that is your body needs vita k - the amount of vita k in vitamins is not enough to hurt your INR or cause you problems. Doctors should never tell anyone to not eat vita k - its in regular amounts -not an abundance. Its your choice but I believe you will do more harm than good because your body needs it. Coumadin should be regulated around what you eat not the other way around.
I am not sure why you say that a multivitamin with vitamin K does not affect your INR because it does exactly that. I started taking Centrum Women's + and my INR dropped in half. We attempted to raise my warfarin level but after three weeks of my INR not being high enough my doctor said I should stop taking Centrum and find another without it or with very low amounts. It does effect it.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Pisces

Having to bow down to convention or limitations is enough to make you want to scream right now, and you'll do your utmost to rebel in any way you can. Be careful about this because you could easily get on the wrong side of someone who has power or authority over you. It feels as though you're battling with forces that want to keep you under control, and you don't like it one bit.
