I dont advise anyone to take a supplement without vita k -- there is no reason for it. Your Coumadin can be managed while you are taking the same thing everyday.

I looked a the Shaklee site, but found that the multivitamin has 80mcg vice 25 for most others. Not sure what vitamin you are referring to.. I would really like to find one that is low or no K. I live in Santee, so we are kinda neighbors!

Paul, the multivitamin will not really effect your INR that much as long as you consistently take it. I know at our Cardiology office the doctors recommended Centrum- but I was always able to regulate my patients on what they were taking. It really doesnt matter - but you should always make sure the vitamin is being absorbed - most on the market today are not - meaning the go right through you. I am a marketing representative for a Wellness company that makes vitamins that ARE absorbed - I know their are other companies out there like it to (I think ).

There is a multivitamin that recently came out called Clotamin and it has no vitamin K. http://www.clotamin.com/

The owner of Clotamin suffers from Factor V and created the vitamin after his doctor recommended taking a multivitamin without k. He could not find one and decided to create his own.

Andrew, the only problem with that is your body needs vita k - the amount of vita k in vitamins is not enough to hurt your INR or cause you problems. Doctors should never tell anyone to not eat vita k - its in regular amounts -not an abundance. Its your choice but I believe you will do more harm than good because your body needs it. Coumadin should be regulated around what you eat not the other way around.

The idea of the multivitamin with out K like Clotmamin (or the Shaklee) is to start the day off with other essential vitamins and then regulate the K on how you eat.

The problem is Andrew most people dont get enough vita k in the foods they eat nor do they get enough of other essential vitamins and minerals.

Thanks for the info! I also am on Coumadin and need to avoid V-K in my multi vitamins.

Laurie: V-K in my multivitamin drops my INR from 3.0 to .77. Some people most certainly are affected by it greatly.

I finally have a doctor who is 1) Okay with me eating a healthly diet and does not insist I avoid V-K in regular foods 2)actually prescribed a varying dose 4 ml for 3 days then 5 ml 1 day which helped finally end 3 years of yo-yoing INR scores.

However - that still occured only after I switched to a V-K less multivitamin. 1-Day womens used to not have V-K in it and I just now finished up my hoard and started to look around again. I am surprised at how hard it is to find now. So OP I do greatly appreciate the tip!

Mick, as I said - it doesnt effect your INR - If you take a multivitamin with vita k in it and you are taking it daily - your INR CAN be regulated on it just as regular as you eating normally. Your INR will bounce around whether you are on a multivitamin or not - it will most likely never stay the same. If your managing doctor knows what they are doing - it can be regulated. It is the same as if you need to take an antibiotic or pain med - you will need to be checked frequently for a while to make sure you are staying in range and then voila - they can find an appropiate coumadin dose for you. I hope this didnt sound harsh it isnt meant to be - Ive regulated over 600 patients and I never took my patients off a vitamin if they were taking one.

Sandee, you should not take ASA unless your doctor prescribes it for some reason. Vitamin E can be taken but it will interact with the Coumadin so you will need to talk with your doctor about taking it and IF you can take it - make sure they check your INR about 3 days after starting it and then again about 4 days later -- that way they can see if the INR is increasing and they can adjust your coumadin.

Laurie,
I am really concerned. I have been on Warfarin for almost 4 months now. I have never in my entire life! experienced the things that I have been experiencing lately. Laurie, I really don't like it. I use to have a Tremendous amount of energy. I feel like an old woman. My main concern at this point, is that I'm not getting any answers that reassures me or makes me feel any better about what's going on in my head. I have never experienced these Strange feelings before, and I'll admit...I'm Scared! The doctors never give you the answers your looking for and they make you think that it's in your head! I know what I'm feeling. Any suggestions would help. Thanks Laurie.

Sandee, you are not alone. Many of the individuals on this forum have experienced these same symptoms. I can honestly say, I never had a patient with these kind of symptoms but ... people on the forum do. I do not disregard any of the side effects people are claiming. I can only encourage you to do your best to try some form of exercise everyday - exercise as hard as it may be for you right now - usually stimulates the body and increases your energy. I can only hope you can try it and see what happens. I know people with muscular problems that have a hard time moving - use a "bouncer" which is basically a trampoline - the bouncing effect opens up the lymph nodes and helps the bod rid itself of toxins and increases energy. Dont despair Sandee - hang in there - I also here that these side effects will diminish - you are not crazy and from what I hear - most doctors dismiss the thought or idea that coumadin causes it - but others feel the same. You are sane and push yourself through this - the worst thing you can do is give in and give up. You can be stronger than you think -- only allow positive thoughts in your head - that you will overcome the fatigue - because YOU CAN. You have this entire forum for support and especially me - we will all be here to help you every step of the way!

To those who are looking for an excellent vitamin here it is...I carry a multivitamin @ www.websolutions1.com search within my website for "multitech" - it comes with or without iron and is in Isotonix form, so you drink it. I have my father who has been on coumadin since 1971 - he is now taking this plus B-complex. There is no Vitamin K to have to worry about in the multi vitamin and both of these products make it easy to take instead of another pill and it replenishes the body with the right vitamins without interferring with the work of the coumadin. He was on 22 meds when he moved in with me and I know have him on 13...

Check it out. Take a free nutri-physical also..

Thanks

I don't know about the rest of you but I forget to take my vitamin at least once a week. I really like Clotamin and I'm a customer. I understand that we need Vitamin K but the reality is people that haven't taken Warfarin dont understand what a nightmare it is getting you INR right. Personally, I'm going to listen to somebody with my disease, no offense Laurie. I'm much rather not get another clot than be a little shy on Vitamin K. Just my two cents

You do not know what you are talking about. My mom is on Coumadin, the Dr. the lab who performs per Pro-Time tests and the Pharmasit, have advised my mom not to take any vitamin with Vitamin K in it. You should not be giving any kind of medical advise.

Barb, no offense, but I know more about coumadin and interactions than most of the regular doctors in my area did. I am the one who asks my patients questions and found out "what" drugs interacted with their coumadin that their "Pharmacist" and doctor had NO idea would interfere. Please dont talk about things you DONT know. Has your doctor or pharmacist ever warned you about taking over the counter medications for allergies, rashes, or poison ivy, etc -- well I know they dont and let me tell you, you take these medications without telling your doctor and your INR will soar. I have spoken with many pharmacist and doctor in my career and I can assure you, they go by a limited list of drug interactions -- there are many , especially over the counter that are NOT on their lists. So before you tell me that I dont know what I am talking about, please get your facts straight. I have managed hundreds of coumadin patients and I can tell YOU, I did it well. So well that my 6 Cardiologists were taking patients who were being monitored by family doctors and gave them to me -- my doctors trusted my judgement and my skills because I went above and beyond what most "doctors" and "pharmacists" did - I didnt lump all coumadin patients into a barrel, I treated them all and managed them individually. I bet your doctor follows a "protocol" when managing your coumadin -- problem with that is - they dont want to take the time to figure your dose out on their own and YOU are one in the barrel. If you actually read research and medical articles on coumadin - you will see that the TRUE recommendation is to regulate a person on what they normally eat and do -- which is eating vita K -- I will tell you, this is very easy to do - NO ONE should be telling you to eliminate vita K from your diet -- do the research, your body needs vita K. You can do what you want Barb, but DO NOT give others the advice of what your doctor and pharmacist suggest, and DO NOT tell me not to give advice if you HAVE NO idea what my background entails.

Hmmm, there seems to be a trend on these threads that is disturbing.

Let's not attack the one person that is a professional nurse and has been managing coumadin patients for the greater part of her professional career. Instead, a big "thank you" is in order for selflessly helping those of us that information and help.

Doctors don't always have time, or take time, or simply don't always have even the knowledge about coumadin.

When I was put on coumadin, the doctors I am sure thought they did their best informing me what to do and what not, but I still had only a very vague idea. These forums have helped me tremendously, and they have been a nice and friendly place, almost a little family, to come to and talk about our issues, and share our experiences, and yes, get help from Laurie.

I am a peacful friendly person, and would very much like for these forums to stay friendly and peaceful like they have been.

Wishing everyone a most wonderful blessed day!

Angela

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Gemini

You're in a warm-hearted and generous mood today, especially when dealing with loved ones and members of the family. You want to give them as much of your time as possible, and also to do anything else that will keep them happy. The only snag will come if you're trying to spread yourself too thin and you end up making promises that will be difficult, if not impossible, to keep. You may forget all about them but other people won't.
